I was one of two people at Bullet Train last night. As I was leaving I heard the music for Top Gun next door and peaked inside. Full house. This thing is nothing short of a miracle.

I was hoping Bullet Train would be decent but the whole movie just looks kind of ugly. Compare it to Top Guns photography (and I'm not just talking about the aerial stuff) and it's night and day

I work at a kinoplex and Top Gun is still one of our most popular films. We regularly sell 20-40% of the theatre for Top Gun while Thor and Nope are struggling to compete.

      >It's objectively one of the most enduring success cases in the history of cinema.
It's got a long way to go, every Cameron film does that and lots of movies before the 70s did too

        Anonymous

Not any longer. That's why TGM stands out. This isn't the early 2000s.

Cameron is in the past. The market has changed completely. He probably lost his fastball.

            Anonymous

It won't. The thrill is gone, Avatar seems primitive while Top Gun Maverick is heroic. Audience's tolerance for ugliness is on the way out.

    Real answer here
There are people doing repeat viewings of this movie just to “stick it to woke Hollywood” and then some who just take their family members to see it. Im a theater wagie on the weekends and have seen the same people show up 4-5 times now

      Anonymous

Has it occurred to you that the repeat viewers in fact enjoy the movie? Kojima watched it 4 times at least

you don't have to pretend to like top gun. frankly you don't even need to watch the first one because like a tv show they replay the only relevant clip from the first movie. fact is this movie is phenomenal and at least 10x better than the first one

I finally watched it a few days ago.

There's zero poz in it. It feels like kind of an egotrip on Cruise's part since the whole film is about how awesome he is, but at no point did I feel condescended to, mocked or attacked and no matter how you slice it all of the dogfight footage is cool as frick. Fighter pilots are awesome. Then you sprinkle in some lightly patriotic messaging, men being heroic badasses, I loved how predictably butthole Hangman swoops in to save them. Val Kilmer's cameos were awkward, and there was a nice emotional beat near the end with the exchange "Thanks for saving my life." "It's what my father would have done.

I walked away from the film not feeling angry, insulted or belittled and thinking I might rewatch it passively just for the dogfights.
