I do fully expect it to be very different from the show yeah. Jon Con and Victarion are two of my favorite characters and they were cut completely, plus their are so many interesting plot lines like Lady Stoneheart and the second Red Wedding, plus Stannis war with the Boltons and the Northern Conspiracy that they cut completely or massively fricked.

King Bran is moronic and Dream of Spring is never coming out but I still want to read Winds.

Plus Faegon, the reason why Dany goes crazy
Plus Cersei dying in a completely different manner much sooner and according to her prophecy, the Valonquar
Plus the Others doing a hell of a lot more than just getting to Winterfell and dying
Roose definitely not just dying to his little b***h bastard son
Manderly not even in the show but doing a lot more since the North Remembers
Sansa finally coming into her own since she was never given to the Boltons as a rapetoy
Littlefinger doing a lot more since it'd be moronic if he goes braindead then just dies to Arya
There's so many things they didn't include or just ended in whatever stupid way they pulled out of their ass just because they wanted it all wrapped up nice and neat. Only maybe 5-10% of it would be similar to the show ending and still arrive there in a vastly different way

This. The script clearly shows a last minute re-write. I mean what ever happened to the civilians let into the Red Keep by Cersei a few episodes prior and never brought up again.

There is a theory that JonCon will be the one who goes nuclear. Of course, he doesn't use dragons but wildfire. When he hears the bells, this triggers ptsd in him from Robert's rebellion and he rather would destroy the city than give it to enemies.

The one absolutely confirmed thing that will be the same as the show is that Jon will kill Dany and that's because she's behaving in a way he doesn't agree with

            Anonymous

Aegon will be loved by the people because he is a dude and the son of the beloved Prince Rhaegar, she will learn about Jon's parentage as well, a new threat, whereas for her, people will only see her as the daughter of the Mad King, out to steal the throne with her dragons and her savage army.
She expects the peasants to adore her, but they'll only feel fear, so she'll give them what they expect, fire and blood, like how Jaime began to act like a scumbag given the way people thought of him after he broke his oath.

The show deviated from the books going from season 5. Plus I don't give a frick about dany or whatever, I just want to see what happens with Stannis Euron and Doran's plotlines

        Anonymous

        >Stannis Euron and Doran
Ok those were sidelined yes. Got it. But the general ending is still going to be there.
Euron will job before the show ends everyone wants him to be the big bad so bad but George probably won't go through with it.
The end was ultimately told to them by George and even Alt Schwift X and the theorist scrubs often have to go "But maybe the end will be a little different in the books for this character!" Because they know the general idea is there.
It doesn't matter if Jon fricks the Others into submission or they unite with the wood kids to deactivate them or whatever, the end will be Dany centered no matter what, Cerci will die and Kings Landing will burn, then she dies.
        The end.
197626927 is right. You're going to get a semi unfinished Dream of Spring and Wolves script with notes on how George was gonna end it and it will be verbatim how it happened in the show.
Will there be more detail and consistency? Sure but the general idea will be the same and people who got made at DnD will seethe for life.

They were efficiently trained and disciplined soldiers, made largely immune to pain. They were extremely strong, not so much alone, but together as a fighting unit. Nobody wanted to fight them, not even more prestigious mercenary groups

Ok so why did they get their shit pushed in when in the alleyway by untrained slavers wearing golden masks as their only protection? That's not even counting the fact that the unsullied was armed with spears which should excel in such a situation.

Vis was dealt a shit hand, and had few tools at his disposal and after what he went through wasn't entirely all there, but fundamentally he was right in what he did but relaxed around the dothraki when he was trying to make them uphold their end of their bargain. In reality he should have leant more martial to build respect, I think Darry was dead before he could teach Vis anything, and being on the run meant it was hard to formally learn, but when at the manse and out on the steppe with Jorah he should have been combatmaxxing

This guy really just finished 2/3 of what could be the single greatest fantasy story ever written, and chose to abandon it cause he got lazy.

This series could have been popular with people 200 years in the future, but instead he could only sell it to people who bought the books before it was clear the series is abandoned.

What a colossal waste of talent.

If we exclude prologue/epilogue characters from Feast and Dance, there were 12 new POV characters, four of theme were characters who had not appeared in books previously. if fatso can't keep himself in check, then his editors should do it.

          Anonymous

I imagine his editors thought it was under control when he was still writing and publishing, and didn't want to disrupt him more when the flow slowed down. Now editors can't have much if any power over him. And GRRM has no self control because he either truly believes in the gardening method or that's his cope and smokescreen. The whole series is easily finishable but not via his methods and it might not have the perfect vision he had in mind, but a ruthless good writer and editor could smash out the last few books and dunk and egg all before 2030

I maintain that the books would have been most likely completed by now and better if George had made the decision to not have Dany as a POV character. Her character would remain a central protagonist but similar to the Others up north, tales of the Targaryens plotting in Essos would just be background noise and speculation that we don't get confirmation of until later in the series through characters like Tyrion going east.

The Essos stuff is the weakest part of the series and has caused most of the problems with pacing, the story is bogged down over there and GRRM keeps trying to bugfix that part of the story by adding more layers.

      Anonymous

I still cope a bit Dream will be easier book for him to write since probably Dany & every other character in Essos will be in Westeros or dead in the end of Winds. He could do it if he finishes Winds next years and starts working on with Dream immediately and doesn't do any other stuff to distract him.

Having Dany as a POV character would be fine if he had any structure and proper timelines while creating the books. Originally he thought of a five year gap after Storm to get everything into place and age up necessary characters but dropped the idea. This was the worst decision he could have made as he was forced to move forward with some plotlines at a normal place while others that required more time basically can't happen. He's absolutely written himself into a corner imo, even if he knows where he wants the plot to go he probably can't actually logically get there.

        Anonymous

I think I recall hearing some analysis that the King's Landing plot is also completely fricked with the death of Kevan Lannister, causing some regency issues. I can't recall the actual analysis because it's been a bit but it's more to point out that it's not just the Dany plot that is a mess, GRRM makes a lot of decisions on a whim and publishes before realising the clashes with initial plans.

I imagine that this becomes a problem when you spend over 3 decades on a series, there is something really important you decided 27 years ago that you just forgot about. 0 chance he ever publishes Winds. When he dies, his wife will sell the rights to Disney probably and let them continue.

That severely tarnished GoT in the eyes of both fans of the books and the normiesphere, who just wanted to watch something entertaining. GoT t-shirts, figures, mugs, everything, just vanished overnight in the stores, along with any discussion on Twitter. All that's left there now regarding GoT is people complaining how shit the ending was, which makes fatty mad and he cries on his blog about it. It probably really gets to him

                Anonymous

Yeah, but it was also his fault not being able to finish a book in the time it took them to make the show, especially as ADWD was forced out in 2011 to build hype for the show. The ending poisons the whole thing as makes any rewatch no worth it, like you have to suffer through declining quality in the middle (which gets fairly substantial as it goes on) and then the end season is just a train wreck

                Anonymous

The decline of the series is so noticeable, it is truly pain. Watching something like The Lord of the Rings, you can always happily start with the first movie, get to the second and get to the third and there is no drop in quality, or entertainment value. It is perfection. Then you get to GoT and it starts off so excellent in season 1. Season 2 isn't quite as good, but still very, very good. But then you start to see the drop in season 4 and it keeps dropping, more and more, until it is near unwatchable. Knowing this, it forever ruins any interest in rewatching the show and even if you do, you'll still feel disappointment, knowing what it leads to

                Anonymous

Like, the show fails to stand up as good genre fiction is even funnier when it was trying to cut it as timeless TV drama like Mad Men, Sopranos, The Wire, Deadwood etc. Like all those shows have weaker seasons but they were all good throughout with decent (if controversial) endings, but GoT went from potentially being in their league if they played it smart to basically shitting the bed. Imagine now nobody wants to adapt unfinished series anymore and that fantasy has taken a cultural blow

I often hear the argument that GoT's end was so bad because of how rushed it felt but honestly, would people really want more seasons like season 5 or 6. In season 7 and 8, they are going at lightning pace and it still feels like filler.
If Game of Thrones ended up having like 10-12 seasons, it would become a repetitive soap op like The Walking Dead. That or they would have to introduce OC characters and arcs, making that take up 95% of the time and we know how that would look.

D&D knew they had to rip the band-aid off ASAP. Could they have passed on the project to somebody else? Probably not

They had a position in a series that many writers would’ve killed to be in but that wasn’t enough for them and they saw GoT as beneath them. They wanted big deals, blockbuster movies and Star Wars trilogies.

And because of their greed and ego they not only lost any chance of having those things, they tarnished their name and legacy. D&D are very much a cautionary tale of what being greedy butthole can do to a person. Shame they had to take down a beloved series with them.

If you think about it from a money-grubbing kosher perspective, it isn't too surprising they went for the bigger, better deal. GoT was ending soon and milking potential was questionable on how far they could go with it after the series was done. Star Wars however, if they could get their foot in the door on that, it would be big money, big clout, with plenty of future prospects. They didn't get any of that, of course, since people looked at what they did with GoT and not finishing their plate with it. Though I don't think they could have screwed up Star Wars any worse than it already is. It is full of israeli hacks already like JJ

Such a short sighted "kosher" perspective, you've got a genuinely interesting and critically acclaimed series here working out for you which could see you long termed lauded and covered in projects and money galore, and you purposefully tank it for free. They deluded themselves that Star Wars was ever going to let them (two rookies) in and they couldn't read the cultural winds both of the GoT stink and the pervading SW stench of deep decay, in some ways Rian was a good thing because any lingering goodwill was brushed away

sure, but the anger then comes from them denying handing off the series to anyone else who was more interested. They didn't want anyone else's name on the show and for only them to get the credit. And somehow thought the ending was going to be a smash hit.

That's the thing, the got none of the credit and all of the blame, which in turn should tank their future careers. IF they handed it off their reputation would be preserved, hell even elevated if the subsequent people ballsed it up

Yes. Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring.

      1/2

GRRM may have said he will finish ASOIAF in two books. But he also said ADWD will release in 2006 and Winds of Winter in 2015. He is either lying or being completely delusional about the amount of work necessary to write even one book, let alone the entire series. If you still believe him after two decades of broken promises, I don't know what to tell you.

Let's be real, with the amount of open subplots and slow as molasses plot advancement which started in AFFC it will take far more then 2 books to finish.
If GRRM somehow changes the pace to the brisk pace of the first book I guess it would take 3 books at least. But that is very unlikely. if he continues with the slow pace of ADWD it would take 5-6 books.

It's a moot point, debating this anyways, for the simple fact the series will never be finished.
He has been writing the FOR 13 YEARS and still nothing released. He is almost 80 years old, fat, lazy, hates writing and very curiously hates ASOIAF the most out of his published works.
Fricking Wildcards receive more attention and love in his blogpost than ASOIAF, his magnum opus. He describes writing ASOIAF as a b***h and a bastard, he compares the series to an ugly big Kong like ape on his back etc. Those are not words of a man that will sacrifice the last years of his life to finish the series. He will take on literally tens of other projects Like House of Dragon TV series, Dunk and EGG, Elden Ring... because he actively hates ASOIAF and will do anything to avoid working on it.

    >finishes his fricking books?

It'll never happen. It's actually in GRRM's best interest to never finish ASOIAF because after this long and with as much on-line discussion and debate over the story, there is no way he can write anything that won't piss off the readers and by just leaving the story unfinished, the on-line discussion and debate can continue forever.

he can't finish it because he isn't a good enough writer to think of a decent ending
there will be a surge in sales and interest in ASOIAF for a little while once he croaks, then the debate will quietly die down, and he and his crap books will fade into oblivion

I think he has ending planned out, probably has been since he begun writing first book, save for few details, but he doesn't know how to get there, He calls himself a gardener type writer, but that doesn't mean he don't have ANY plans.

I think he has had three things planned from the first novel:
Everyone comes together to stop The Others
          Jon is Lyanna's child
          Arya kills Jon

          >He calls himself a gardener type writer, but that doesn't mean he don't have ANY plans.

But vague ideas where the plot will go won't really help him finish the books.
Let's take Bran's story "Bran defeats the Night King with psychic powers and becomes the king of Westeros." It's a nice idea.

But now you have to write it so it makes sense.
And you need to fit his story in two books.
And Bran is also just 1 of 20 main POV's so you have limited place to write his story in the last two books because the story it's not just about him.
And you haven't really written any justification in the 5 previous books about Bran becoming king so you need to do the hard work in the last 2.

And you are 75 years old so your time is limited.
And you have about 20 other projects you work on.

And even if you somehow figure out Bran's story in every detail, that is just 1/20 POV's stories you have to conclude in a satisfactory manner.

            Anonymous

Have you not paid attention whatsoever to Bran's story? GRRM absolutely did justify him becoming king. Because his body is actively being stolen by Bloodraven and 'Bran' as a person is dying. Bloodraven will become king and it's not a happy ending, which is something GRRM despises.

              >Have you not paid attention whatsoever to Bran's story?

Anon, even the most pedantic ASOIAF analyst agree there is barely a few lines of foreshadowing that Bran will be king in 5 books (Bran the Broken is mentioned in the second book etc.). Before the S8 finale aired Bran as a king was mentioned more in a jest than a plausible theory.

              >>GRRM absolutely did justify him becoming king.

Citation needed. But realistically how would the Lords of Westeros accept a crippled 10 year old boy in a wheelchair who can't father children and dabbles in dark magic as a king ? Because he has beaten the Others ? He would maybe get some respect but as a king, nah.

will become king and it's not a happy ending, which is something GRRM despises.

Reading a story about a boy being crippled, losing his dreams of being a knight and losing his humanity and personality in the end is certainly not a happy story, but it's still a shitty one. Writing a depressing story doesn't make it good by default.

Anyway Bloodraven possessing Bran it's just a theory that was made up to salvage the horrible S8 FINALE.

If instead of spending all the goddamn time on side stories, genealogies, Wild Cards, and other stupid shit he just sat down and fricking WROTE he would be able to get to the finish line. Imagine if Robert Jordan was just like "Ahhh shit this trilogy I planned looks like it'll need a frickton more books, ehhhh frick this I'm out peace homie." The fact of the matter is if he wrote one single page a day since the release of Dance With Dragons he could have written the equivalent of literally all of ASoIAF by now. In retrospect, it should have been obvious he would be king. He gets the first chapter, and he is a cripple. It's a subversion of the idea of an attractive leader like Jon or Dany becoming king. Him naming his dog Summer, Summer being constantly associated with life in the books, should have been another clue. Bran has basically been positioned as the champion of life against the death that winter and the white walkers represent. Bloodraven is leading him down a dark path, not unlike the Faceless men leading Arya and LF leading Sansa into a dark path. They will all find their way in the end.

Still though, George is going to need to devote significant time to Bran in the next 2 books if he want to convince people that Bran being king is a good ending.

Bran becoming the King in the North by the end would honestly be good, but him becoming the King of all of Westeros is pants on head moronic and extremely unsatisfying

Not really. Any of the normal lineup of Kings currently seeking the throne would be moronic and unsatisfying. Stannis is going to die somehow, Faegon was always a false flag and will die, Dany will be killed by Jon who will go into exile. Who else would be king then that could bring lasting peace to the realm?

a further problem, which your pic is a key example of, is how all the other stories are supposed to feed into the main story and its mysteries. Why were there no dragons at the start of GoT and they got butchered during the Dance? See P&Q to find out. What was the Tragedy At Summerhall? See D&E to find out. None of these answers will be provided in the main series but are vital to its plot, so you get this sprawling mystery mess but where the mystery matters to the plot and all have to be revealed

I don't think GERMS gave up on this series, but he's certainly poking at it miserably, like a kid forced to eat overcooked, cold vegetables. His last two books were a mess and no doubt so will Winter, if it is made before he croaks (unlikely). Writing out fresh new stories that aren't hundreds of pages long, is much more appealing to him these days. He can think up something stupid, write it down, churn it out, then go to the next thing. Not so with Ice and Fire. He needs to go back and remind himself where all these characters are, what they were doing last, how he can weave them into the new narrative, etc. A big task if you no longer are interested in the story, which is very clear he isn't

Frick him. He had no pity for the generations that came before when they shrank and horror at the world of hedonism, social liberalism and secularism his generation wrought.

This fat butthole just believes whatever was on CNN the night before and does whatever it told him to do or think. Your average TikTok browsing zoomer knows more about the world than this moron by now. The more I read his stupid blogs, the more I question why I even care if the next book comes out at all. What's he going to write about of quality if this is what is floating around in his mind?

His writing was normal throughout the 90s to 2011, but seeing as 2016 broke every liberals mind I can easily imagine he's tempted to rewrite parts so that it's about Current Year evil Drumpf shit

      >"i am famous and I am wealthy and, supposedly, I have a "big platform." Whatever that is. But I have grown more and more cynical about this supposed "power" that people keep telling me I have. Has anything I have ever written here ever changed a single mind, a single vote? I see no evidence of that. The era of rational discourse seems to have ended."

This sniveling homosexual is so disingenuous. If he went to a Wild Cards convention of his, or even posted on Twitter, saying that Palestine was getting Hardhome'd and erased off the planet, he'd definitely turn heads from both sides of the political sphere. He won't though because that's uncomfortable to him, talking about things that may actually bring unwelcome criticism on his doorstep. Instead, he opts to cry about Blorft, people not getting vaccinated, Jan 6th, etc. Everything that is nice and safe and socially acceptable because he is a draft-dodging coward. Then he complains he has no real pull? What a fat moron

Nah he's right. He'd "turn heads", sure, but he's not changing anybody's mind. Even if he does, does it even matter? Not like our government gives a frick what we think. His flaw is moreso in thinking that "rational discourse" ever truly mattered, but he's right that in any case it doesn't currently.

The thing I was most excited to see was Sansa and littlefinger acting together in the future.

Sansa, who has been through hell and started off the most naïve of the Stark children, will be taken under the wing of littlefinger, the master schemer and eventually become someone who fights with words and plots very effectively. Maybe even turning the tables on littlefinger down the road when she's a little more experienced.

Would be a nice counterpart to her younger sister as well, who wields death as a weapon, rather than reason.

I really hate TV Sansa's supergenius girlboss arc, it's just not believable that trauma alone raises your IQ. We don't see LF actually teaching her anything, she just suddenly wakes up one day and desires world domination.

From what I remember in the books, it seems like she really is just going to remain a political pawn until the end. LF is going to install her in the North as part of his plans, it might play out that she realises his schemes and turns against him due to constantly being used and betrayed but this is very different from the shows approach

I actually thought that she was playing Jon during the battle of the bastards, intentionally letting him die in battle a hero to pursue her own personal claim with LF's Vale army but then they IMMEDIATELY defuse that notion and explain that she just wanted to prove that she is smart womyn and should be listened to.

The TV doesn't want any of the main cast to look too "bad", they should have had Sansa turn into Cersei for pottery purposes.

Varys was always a Targ loyalist. Everything he said to Aerys was true. The Southron Ambitions Coalition and Rhaegar were each seeking to usurp him. Varys also told him the truth about Tywin wanting to sack the city.

It's not feeding paranoia if everyone is trying to usurp you.

Been forever since I read the books. Was Varys and Illyrio backing faegon or Daenerys?

        Anonymous

Varys is backing Aegon, and he is real.

Varys also kills Pycelle and Kevan in a way that directly mirrors the killing of Elia and her children indicating a personal grudge.

Varys mentions his sadness over the death of Rhaenys and how no one helped her (Aegon unmentioned interestingly) when Ned pleads for him to help Sansa in the crypts.

Varys also sneaks Aegon VI out of King's Landing not unlike Larys did to Aegon II when it was sacked.

This Faegon meme is going to age so badly, and this is coming from someone who would have liked a Blackfyre to take the throne.

          Anonymous

I’d be willing to accept Aegon is a Targaryen, but some of the possible foreshadowing would be pretty coincidental or a red herring. I’m also confused about dany and viserys part to play in varys plan. Was it that they initially wanted viserys to be king? If so why was Aegon trained to be king since north?

            Anonymous

They wanted Viserys and Dany to provide a distraction so that that they could groom and protect Aegon until the moment was right for him to rise. They probably would have brought V+D back into the fold when the time for Aegon was right. Now that Dany has dragons, they definitely want Aegon to marry Dany.

            Anonymous

they would've sent viserys with a dothraki horde to sack and destabilize westeros, swooping in and installing faegon once everyone was weakened
