>dude just spend tens of millions of dollars filming a movie spoken in an ancient language starring real Mayans entirely about tribal conflicts deep in the 16th century Yucatan
Yeah dude, what a sure bet that is. Guaranteed money maker with mass appeal.
he was on a roll with the language stuff after passion of the christ, why wouldnt he continue? and there was supposed to be a viking movie but it never panned out, or i dont know maybe that became the northman? but i dont really know.
A movie about Jesus Christ has WAY WAY WAY more mass appeal than a movie about the downfall of the Mayans, bucko.
What I'm saying is, I don't understand how any studio had the balls to greenlight this kind of movie when you see how profoundly cowardly Hollywood has become with regard to making their budget back.

mel had a massive net worth with tons of connections, but then the whole cancelling thing because he went insane on his wife, who then took half his bank account, basically killed his director career for like a decade.
>maybe that became the northman?
nah mel's film was called berserker and had nothing to do with the ameleth story
northman was a collaboration between eggers and skarsgard, both wanted a new viking epic for the time
>Guaranteed money maker with mass appeal.
... yes?
The fact that you see it in any way a dangerous or unsure ground further paints you as a clueless zoomer shit or younger millenial, too young to remember this sort of movies being shit out by the dozen back in the day. Even the language aspect wasn't something unique.
And that without bringing even the context of the 70s and how many of those were made back then.

>Movie makes bank >moron homosexual can't wrap his head around it, 20 years later >Because he acts like a typical studio exec - he "knows" this concept won't sell, so it obviously can't sell, period
The budget is only 40 million. I'm sure the actors and especially extras were not paid to what we would consider "good" wages (I'm sure it was plenty considering where it was filmed). It did pretty well, all things considered.
Mel is a Malick trend chaser lol. Gets Caviezel to do a less-good version of his Thin Red Line character for The Passion, then gets the Native guy from The New World for Apocalypto.
He made Braveheart and Passion of the Christ which were big hits so they took a risk on Apocalypto which also did well. So he built up credibility for his experimental film. Though Last of the Mohicans did pretty well years prior and was pretty niche.
Mel Gibson is talented as frick. I never see him mentioned whenever the topic of best directors is brought up, altough he's deserving of being brought up. Who did he piss off to be blacklisted? Even as an actor he's great, the first two lethal weapons are great thanks to him
>but he's a tier 2 director.
maybe I exaggerated by calling him one of the best, but he doesn't get nearly as much praise as he should
He is quite talented, it's a shame he was robbed of his best years. He's not on the level of being brought up with the best because he lost his prime, more or less. And it was israelites obviously, not even in a /misc/ way but that is indeed why he was blacklisted. The racism didn't help but could have been forgotten/swept under the rug.
His exwife leaked recordings of his drunk ramblings which were aimed at her and israeli people if I remember correctly.
that makes sense. never bite the hand that feeds ya

Only the first half is good. The chase stuff was not nearly as interesting as seeing their primitive life in their hunter gatherers tribe change to being slaves in an empire.
>Aztec movie
>Niche
How does it feel being younger than internet?

Robert Eggers wanted to make The Northman spoken entirely in old Scandinavian, they didn't let him

nah mel's film was called berserker and had nothing to do with the ameleth story

This. Where are the capes? Where are the super heroinos?
Where are the Black folk and gay flags and holocaust memorials?
Mel Gibson insane Faustian energy, that’s how

He called out the israelites that run Hollywood, and mysteriously his Hollywood career immediately fell apart.
Had he not done that he would be a living legend today praised by society as a whole, given whatever project he wanted.
Spanish vs the Aztecs War movie for when?
Any other good Mayan/Aztec kino? I've pretty much only seen this and Aguirre The Wrath of God.

nah
