Seriously though why is it that people from the 80s-early 2000s always sound so fricking dumb to me? If you watch clips from Michael Moore documentaries or reactions to 9/11 or Columbine or anything people always sound well-meaning but pretty fricking dull. Society is worse now than it was then but I do think the internet made people better at choosing their words for shit and having a greater sense of scale and perspective.

Reminds me of when a special needs student in my community college theatre class answered, "Arnold Schwarzenegger" to the prof's question, "Who would be a good actor for Hamlet?"

The prof told him not to give stupid answers and to think seriously about the question; the sped argued back that Arnold can be a great actor and deserved an oscar for portraying a robot so well in Terminator 2. That's when the prof remembered he was talking to a sped kid and proceeded to ignore him and ask somebodoy else.

You say that like there’s some universal key to doing a Shakespeare movie. Branagh got so much praise but looking back half of them are overwrought. Puts himself in a lead of course. Hollow Crown also got tons of praise, completely different direction, more theatrical but at the same time rich sets, with some odd performances like the extremely fey Richard II.
Could Arnold do Hamlet? Of course. Baz Luhrman did Romeo + Juliet. Mel Gibson did Hamlet.
What’s a good actor for it? You’ve built in a preconceived idea of how all Shakespeare should be performed and staged in your question.

For real. The best Shakespeare i have ever seen was a troupe of quasy amateur actors playing midsommer's night dream. The 'theater' was almost made fron scraps and you could almoat see the back stage. But te fricking energy of everyone and willing to show a good story dominated everything else.
I spend the whole time imagining that it was surely closer to the original than the up of their arse actors, directors and professors telling us nowadays how Shakespeare should be interpreted

after seeing Last Action Hero i wished for an actual Arnold-Hamlet movie in the style of the fake Arnold-Halmet movie teased in the dream sequence in Last Action Hero. that movie would have been amazing. shot in blue tinted greyscale where only fire, explosions, and blood are colored. This, as a 90s kid it seemed like the media looked at him the same way social media today views Steven Seagal. Like, everyone was just always shitting on him and his movies. I was born in the mid '80s so I wasn't conscious enough to see how the media treated him then, but I'm guessing he was still riding the wave of being Mr. Universe and steroid strong men still being new and novel.

Even worse, it turned into a drama in the third act.

Sadly, Cameron will never make another great action movie. While editing Avatar 2, he took out something like 10 minutes of footage featuring guns because he doesn't want to make them look cool; there's only just enough gun shots to establish context for the action scenes. In the same interview where he brags about this, he said he regrets how much his older movies fetishized guns and says he'd get rid of most of the gun footage in those movies too if he could.

      >It was Arnold in his fricking prime

He was 45, which is quite far past the prime for someone who got famous on his physique. People tend to forget that Arnold was a comparatively late bloomer in Hollywood. He was in his mid-thirties when he did the first Terminator. He was visibly diminished by age when he did Eraser and Terminator 3. His period as a huge star didn't last much more than a decade.

Last Action Hero was a meta comedy about Arnold Movies. it was/is 2smart4u for many people. also many critics/hollywood people are pedophiles and for whatever reason they hate that child actor, Austin O'Brien(Danny Madison in the film) like how they hate the child actor from Star Wars Phantom Menace/Jingle All the Way(another arnold comedy). for "some reason" pedowood/hollywood really really really hates young white male child actors paired up with good masculine adult role models. they hate it hate it hate it.

This isn't a deep film. Nobody was filtered by it. It was just not what people wanted from Arnold so it was universally panned. If it had been made 20 years later it would have been a smashing success, it was just simply made too early in his career.

This, he should have made it later in career. Where it is now in the timeline just feels like wasted Prime Arnold time. I feel the same about his comedy movies.

It's what I wanted since it's one of my favourite Arnold films. It was done at the perfect time where he had a good string of films under his belt and wasn't too old. Doing it 20 years later would have been awful, not just because Arnold would be too old but because you're long past the period of people making good action movies. When you make it 20 years later you get The Expendables.
