the show has dealt with supernatural/science fantasy elements before but there's usually some kind of explanation at the end. but there's always been higher beings like the old ones, the guardians of time, the toymaker, the gods of ragnarok, so on. they're borderline supernatural because of the power they have but are still within the realm of explainable. so it looks like it wants to lean more in that direction. personally i think it's just RTD trying to do the Moffat era how he would have done it, by making it into a black gay transexual fairy tale where every legacy character gets ruined intentionally

        Anonymous

        >there's usually some kind of explanation at the end.
I think that is what he means when he says Clarke's 3rd law - there is either the explicit explanation that they are just really really technologically advanced or there is the implication that they are. Doctor Who may not care for hard sci-fi and may as well be magic with its techno babble however, actual supernatural/fantasy/magic/Lovecraftian-whatever is abnormal in the setting itself and for the show to focus upon. Part of the interest in that sort of thing appearing in the setting coming from how uncommon and outside context problem they are for the Doctor. Moffat was 'fairy tail' but, it was not supernatural.

          Anonymous

          >Moffat was 'fairy tail' but, it was not supernatural.
and i think RTD is gonna go full supernatural more or less, basically imparting all of the crazy superscience that's magic that was contained to characters like the Time Lords and Guardians etc. and making it more common. like the goblins in the Christmas special feast on 'coincedences' in a supernatural, non-physical way

        >always been higher beings like the old ones, the guardians of time, the toymaker, the gods of ragnarok, so on
None of this shit is scientifically explainable. If you can accept a reality-warping god from a higher dimension then you shouldn't get thrown by a fricking ghost.
Also, Doctor Who is and has always been homosexual bullshit.

The show is a disney plus production now and they don't want viewers thinking they need to watch 13/37 previous seasons to "get" it, hence the soft rebrand.

The Disney+ involvement is really just as a back up for the show as the BBC is losing funding. It's surprising just how open RTD is with it. If Disney pulls out they'll go back to low budget.

Despite the actor looking zesty, nothing about his character is gay.
And Doctor Who has done gay before, usually with lesbians. JNT wrote Tegan/Nyssa to be attracted to each other. Moffat put in Jenny Slate/lizard girl.
RTD despite being a homosexual himself has actually had restraint.

Rewatch 5's run. They are FAR more affectionate with each other than any other companions barring Amy/Rory. They both care about each other much more than The Doctor. Look at when Nyssa decides to go and Tegan tearfully begs her to stay and then begs The Doctor to make her stay.

In modern times DW has comics or whatever that have retconned them to be an actual couple because THAT IS WHAT JNT WANTED TO DO ALL ALONG. He couldn't be forthright with it obviously because of the times.

The BBC were going to cancel it if not for Disney coming in to fund it. It goes to show what a truly poor state if became that the BBC were willing to cancel the show even if doing so confirms, or at least gives the impression of, that a female Doctor was a bad decision.

the show was already failing when they cast an old man as the Doctor. NuWho was rebooted as a Smallville rip-off with a young attractive Doctor subdued to a present-day Earth Mary Sue. as soon as the show moved away from this structure (and even while doubling down on the Mary-Sue) it was done.

the issue was the writing, Capaldi was fine. a lot of fangirls stopped watching BECAUSE HE'S TOO OOGLEH but the real dips in the ratings came abouit because of the writing.

they were about to. Chibnall and the woman Doctor basically destroyed the brand. ratings were in the toilet and due to how toxic and insulting they were to the fans, interest in the brand was at an all time low. no one even cared about the other stuff anymore. Russel Davies who rebooted the show agreed to come back with more creative control so now he's making the show overbearingly woke for his legacy. it's terrible.

The BBC were going to cancel it if not for Disney coming in to fund it. It goes to show what a truly poor state if became that the BBC were willing to cancel the show even if doing so confirms, or at least gives the impression of, that a female Doctor was a bad decision.

it wasn't just Disney, the brand was dead, NO ONE wanted to showrun the thing. BBC had to offer Davies basically anything he asked for to save the show again. and he was the only person willing to take over.

More that there's basically a Doctor Who club or friend/acquaintance group that all of the nu-Who showrunners were a part of that the role only gets offered to. There's still people with experience who want to do the show.

it still makes me laugh how people managed to persuade themselves that RTD could "save" the show when he's the guy who ran away after only 4 seasons and when the ratings peaked just because Tennant left and he perfectly knew the show's success was completely due to Tennant alone.
