yeah its great but I enjoyed it much more after reading a biography of Augustus and understand more of the time period. Im not sure anyone can genuinely keep track of all the characters of I Claudius without knowing their relevance. It doesnt explain the significance of Lucius and Gaius for example

It's the greatest TV theatre play ever filmed.

It's the closest thing to a sequel to Rome that we're ever going to get.

Incredible books, I always avoid watching the BBC series because I don't want anything spoiling my memories of the books. Graves did such a fantastic job. I read them as a teenager and they got me into Roman history.

Read the too. It is well cast, and follows the book. I saw it when it first aired in America. T. 70

On your word I'll give it a shot but I normally hate adaptations as I feel they poison the original even when they're good, I am autistic as frick like that

I loved how Claudius The God has a smutty as frick cover. I read both of them at work when I could and had people asking me about the first one, then pausing and not bringing up what the frick I had in my hand for the 2nd.

I love the portrayal of Augustus as more tired and exasperated than anything. His youthful ambition is gone and now he's just beaten down by the demands of government and public life.

This is pretty much the best thing ever and required viewing. But also do check out the Devil Rides Out (with Charles Gray and Christopher Lee) and TTSS and Smiley's People.

The scene with Caligula murdering his pregnant sister was too intense. I can't imagine how the original was approved when it was apparently much darker.

The crazy part is it's true. The Roman guard actually did raise him as emperor so that there would be someone to pay their income. He then went on to be one of the best in that seat. A truly great man.

        >He then went on to be one of the best in that seat.
Eh. He was great by the standards of the Julio-Claudians, but that's only because aside from Augustus they were all terrible (or so the senators said). As an emperor he did some cool things like conquering England, but he also got cucked and murdered by his wife. He was okay, the real tragedy when it comes to Claudius is that his History of the Etruscans has been lost.

Nothing, because by all accounts like Tiberius he legitimately did not want to be emperor. Just a competent man in a bad position he never wanted to be in.

    >"But at least he's still here." Yes, still here. And they've all gone, every one of them. It's like a dream - dreamed by Livia, sleeping fitfully down in hell.

    >Oh yes, there’ll be some bad emperors after Nero, but these were the worst
The frick? Sure Nero and Caligula were garbage emperors, but they were completely limited in damaging the empire because they ruled at a time of great prosperity. Emperors like Commodus, Caracalla, Elagabalus, Honorius and Valentinian III all mogg the shit out of the Julio-Claudians in terms of cruelty and incompetence, and thats not even getting into the Byzantines.

Skip the Caligula episode (8: Zeus by Jove) and watch the entire Caligula 1979 film instead. Then back to Clavdivs episode 9.

Exceptional cast for an exceptional show. The caesars is also pretty good, the whole series is on youtube, bit of a shame it was shot in black and white, the sets look great
