At least Tim and Eric had some grounding in reality i.e. public access television and infomercials. This show mocks things that don't even exist.
This. Tim and Eric is great but it's legacy is that it convinced a bunch of terminally unfunny people that they could do lolrandum XD comedy too.
Tim and Eric are grounded in bullshit, and can't make a punchline without bullying a retard, either irl or through an actor (ie Steve Brule). I don't think they'd be what they were without living in the dawn of powerful, cheap editing software. Conversely, I would bet that Mr. Show, Monty Python, Mike O'Donahue, Frank Zappa (lol), or Spike Milligan would have all done something even crazier than Awesome Show if any of them had access to the same tools. Don't forget, every single act I listed DID research the bleeding edge of applied entertainment technology at the time, so we can't trump up TnE on that aspect as pioneers either. With all of this aside, the jokes are few and far between in AS, but I'll capitulate that they're there ("We're turning your bedroom back into the computer room" is gold). Even conceptually, Norm could go more out there with just a microphone and his voice, but that isn't a fair conception. Either way, AS with jokes is Mr. Show looking backwards, or World Peace looking forwards. It's a landmark show that's aged like milk, just like plenty of other Ob*ma era edgelord garbage like Death Grips.
