It's a reference to Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World", where humans are classified as Alphas, Betas, Deltas, and Gammas in decreasing order of intelligence. Initially the Betas Deltas and Gammas were replaced by a new breed called the uniVersal Human Subtype, but it was found that only the Betas would be replaced by the VHS, as the Deltas and Gammas were useful as menials, and the VHS were better consumers than the Betas.

It doesn't make sense. I'm not sure Beta was ever popular enough for rental stores to be devoted to it. Renting movies did'nt catch on until everybody had a cheap shitty VHS player.
