It's a remake of an older movie which was better because it shows boobs.

You had to have been there. Literally everyone I knew was talking about it when it was released. It was one of the coolest things they ever saw.
Baz Luhrmann should be tried at a war tribunal
correct
>Reading Romeo and Juliet in highschool - omg true love so romantic!
>Reading Romeo and Juliet as an adult - stupid fricking kids got themselves killed because they didn't listen to their parents.
You were filtered both times
>Reading Romeo and Juliet as a Chad - Italians are moronic
Based Shakespeare.

I remember having to watch this in high school. Was an absolute blast, one of the few times I enjoyed a movie they made us watch.
This. And Braveheart.
>Americans think Braveheart is historically accurate.
Literally what on Earth is the point of putting Shakespeare in a modern setting. I think it's supposed to make the play feel more "natural" and "familiar" but instead it's just jarring and annoying because I'm seeing 20th century teens talking like they just signed the Magna Carta and it's all I can focus on.
9/10 times its to cut costs on costumes and set pieces. You see this all the time in local theaters. Period costumes are expensive so you just see them set it in whatever they have laying around.
Oh shit, that actually makes sense. Now I get it, thanks based community theater anon.
This applies specifically to theatres but in the Romeo + Juliet case it was just to be over the top and stylish. Worked well imo.
Maybe you're just a very orthodox person? Do you get annoyed when a relative starts to do routines differently? Feeding a pet earlier/later.
It just feels silly to me to have 14th century dialogue in a modern setting. It's never gonna seem natural or appropriate and it just distracts from what the play's actually about.
>and it just distracts from what the play's actually about.
But we have the play set in Italian Verona gazillions of times.
That's fair, but if ever there was an artist who doesn't need to be improved or expanded on, I think it'd be Shakespeare.
It can be done well. This is my favorite screen adaptation, but like I said most of the time its just to save some cash for poor local theaters which can come off as lazy. I saw an adaptation of Othello with a modern military base as a setting. They just happened to get some cheap uniforms from a surplus store. The actor playing Iago delivering his lines in the most over the top southern accent was just icing on the cake.

It was the only tolerable Baz Luhrmann flickerino
WRONG
I watched it when it came out and thought it was incredibly gay, the setting and art style was good but they had them speaking in old English it was moronic.
Would have been just as moronic if they did the setting in the past but had them speaking in 90s New York slang or ghetto hip hop nig shit
Brainlets getting filtered by Shakespeare
Why do zoomers have trouble getting anything out of their basic reference frames?
It's about the spectical of an over the top modern setting where everyone speaks Shakespearean language.

Guys, I have a question. Is it creepy to think about Shakespeare kissing his wife?
I mean despite their declining relationship. Shakespeare did live out the final years of his life with his wife and daughter in Stratford. So they most likely ocassionally kissed.
You on shrooms or LSD my man?
Wasn't his wife named Anne Hathaway? I just picture the actress kissing the drawing of Shakespeare
