It was really good but there was a lot of fat to it. Could have easily been about 15 minutes shorter. I went in the first week of release adn the theater was weebs only and even they didn't laugh at the obvious, and very japanese, humor that was infused into the movie because it wasn't done very well.
Good movie though. Just not pants shittingly great.

also extremely underrated soundtrack, excluding the original suites of course

This. It being just a good and cool movie makes it stand out above most of the rest.
It also is a good Godzilla movie, which I think is shattering many peoples expectations of Godzilla movies only being dumb and/or goofy movies with no entertainment. I've seen quite a few people online explain how they really only knew of or watched the 2014 Godzilla movie and their only exposure has been Shin and/or the Legendary movies.

Giant monster comes out of the ocean and smashes stuff. What's not to get? Good well-rounded cast and boat kino as well. It was a very Japanesey movie, but it was written well enough where foreigners could grasp the historical and cultural cues (unlike Shin Godzilla which filtered most gaijin).

Shin Godzilla was a terrible movie aside from that one crazy scene where he erupts.

        Anonymous

That's the best scene in the movie, but yeah it's a very cynical film. Minus One is much more positive and inspirational even though it basically had the same message as Shin (the Japanese government sucks and we need to come together as a united people to solve our problems).

Yeah but later on they're able to defeat him by organizing together despite being just as dry as before. Maybe a few points of few of just some normal ass people could have helped imo

It to represent that Japan was at point zero after the bombings, so Godzilla sends it back even further- therefore, minus one.
It has a double-meaning with the main character being a kamikaze Zero pilot going to his lowest point- therefore, below a 'zero' pilot.

      wtf is that plane design?

        Anonymous

it was a real plane made and tested towards the end of the war
        >On 3 August 1945, the prototype first flew, with Tsuruno at the controls, from Mushiroda Airfield.[4][10][page needed][11] Two more short flights were made, a total of 45 minutes airborne, one each on the same days as the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki occurred, before the war's end. Flights were successful, but showed a marked torque pull to starboard (due to the powerful engine), some flutter of the propeller blades, and vibration in the extended drive shaft.[11]
probably not optimal but who knows how it could've turned out with more tweaking and testing (im obviously biased because it's so fricking cool)

How did you get that message?! It was anti war altogether. Godzilla getting stronger and was due to the US blowing him up with a nuke. Then after losing like 10 warships they were like 'uhhh sorry gotta go cant let the commies see us' and dipped out. Then the Japan govt was like 'uhhh lets keep this on the down low so we dont scare anyone and hope it goes away' and dipped out.

the US did it in an attempt to kill godzilla and being anti-war when your country was just destroyed and toppled by another country makes you a traitor, if he were a true supporter of Japan he'd want the country to keep fighting the evil americans as long as possible because the alternative is much worse. Him being anti-war just means he would've preferred Japan give up and let other countries do whatever the frick they want to it.

This is cope. The reason Godzilla is such a beast is because Muttmericans dropped the bomb. He was just a little territorial guy chilling in his little island before they came in. Not to mention Americans are portrayed as cowardly cucks who don't dare offending the commies even if it means letting the people die they ruined after the war. The movies hatee the military and the government

I just saw it for my seventh and last viewing, I’m going to miss having this in theaters.
Something about it just clicks with me, like every time I still feel incredibly hyped by the finale and tear up a little at the last scene with Noriko.

I haven’t felt this way about a film in a long time and I’m glad we have this gem in a time where so many movies feel so cynical and trashy. Thank you based Yamazaki for all the entertainment I’ve had the past two months.
