With some forms of art yes, you're right. The artist should compose the song he wants to hear. But if you're a professional songwriter hired to write songs for Justin Beiber or Taylor Swift, you'd better be damn sure their target demographics like what you're creating.

          >because Arcane took a ton of liberties with League of Legends lore and would be considered a loose adaptation
Did it? League lore wasn't really taken seriously in the first place, and even then, for the most part, it followed basic character backgrounds. Arcane just expanded on them in a fleshed out world. League lore is getting retconned regularly anyway, and most of the people who play the game don't really care about the lore.

As an aside, as a former League player, the most fun I ever had playing that game was when Arcane was out. It revived the playerbase for like 6 months, was a blast.

Fallout 3 was originally supposed to be a prequel and was redated to be the (at the time) latest in the series very late in development, and it shows

Everything in the game makes more sense; burned skeletons everywhere, hordes of feral ghouls and super mutants, the Enclave controlling large swaths of land, the Brotherhood of Steel having massive power armor reserves and actually trying to help people, etc. if it's set ten years after the Great War instead of 200

Fallout 3 was fine for when it was produced but going back and replaying it you would see it's actually quite bad and the writing is terrible.
New Vegas has it's own issues but the writing was far superior to 3, not to mention the music which was kino as frick.
Most fans if they had to choose which game to make non-canon, they would go with 3 because it's just so pointless and stupid. At least New Vegas had the callbacks to Fallout 1+2 and brought in some great new characters and factions like the Legion.

I enjoyed both FO3 and NV back when they were released, but after replaying both recently I have to say FO3 is superior and closer to the vibe of the original games. NV, while still enjoyable, tends to take itself way too seriously.

He’s right. You have to make tour own thing and not fan service. However this is distinct from making a different show that wears some franchise as a skin suit. John Halo isn’t just not for the fans, it doesn’t know what Halo even is. Many franchises have made tv and film that actively loathes the people who ARE fans.

So for Fallout this means that telling a new non canon story that fits the setting and humor (yes humor, the only non comedic Fallout was the first one and only 40-50 year old losers even played it) is a success.

This is all nonsense PR talk, the truth is they don't want or need to please fans. Buying the IP was buying the fans, the fans are already there and will already watch it. Why make something for an audience that are already going to be watching your film?
They purposely make adaptions unlike the main series because they want to expand to the audience that clearly wasn't attracted to the series yet. They just need to make up some bullshit story about fans being hard to please man-children to cover it up.

What's the point if the normal audience has no expectaions to begin with?
They would be equally pleased by something that pleases the fans

The normal audience already isn't into the series for some reason. So they add everything that can to attract the audience that isn't there. No romance? Add in a love triangle. Lacking representation? Get one of everything. Too much talking? Add in enough action to use for marketing.
It's all about finding that untapped market.

But that shit would sell even without spending time, budget and resources pretending to be about X IP.
It also create a short sighted environment where everything feels the same and you need to get progressively more performative to attract eyeballs

      >They purposely make adaptions unlike the main series because they want to expand to the audience that clearly wasn't attracted to the series yet.
Are you sure about that? The reason most people arne't attracted to video game IP's is that they don't play video games, not that they aren't interested in the story. My dad would probably love everything about the Bioshock series but he will never play a video game. So if they adapted it faithfully he would probably watch it. But if they made a woke adaptation he probably wouldn't. Granted the game itself went woke with infinite but you get the idea..

How true is this though? With dozens upon dozens upon dozens of failures, i myself have become very bitter and no longer have any interest in any of these shows/movies unless it clearly looks relatively faithful to the source material.

Like the borderlands trailer just pisses me off to see and it seems the general reception is extremely negative across the board. How many fans did they even buy?

Lol, these kind of things always make me laugh. You know what's behind this right? These are the grown up art school and drama club kids, right, and they have -always- looked down on the geeks and nerds and the stuff they enjoy. And the fact that the geeks and nerds won the culture war and now they have to make stuff for them makes them seethe. And these guys were not just those kids, they were the elite of those kids, with the backing of parental money and probably a small amount of talent ruthlessly leveraged and fostered by said parents.
Add in the fact that absolutely nobody wants to fund their 6 hour snoozefest personal project about an obscure 17th century painter and you have a ball of seething envy and rage, and they just can't BELIEVE they have to make this SCHLOCK but if they're gonna do it they're gonna make sure that you don't like it, because they're better than you, and you're scum.
High school never ends. And it's hilarious.

I wouldn't mind a fallout set in Europe or Australia or something completely new. Alaska seems like too much of nothing outside of operation anchorage which was already covered in 3, and we already had pseudo-louisiana with Point Lookout being a swampland, so I don't know how they'd give a game focused entirely on Louisiana (or southern florida, etc) a fresh and unique identity. I can't really think of anywhere in the US that would provide a new and fresh perspective for a fallout game, honestly. we've already covered most of the coasts, and the midwest is mostly very boring. texas would be too similar to the southwest which we've already covered. I suppose Chicago and the great lakes area in general would probably be my top pick for a new US-based fallout. could even go up into canada a bit with some DLC.

Miami and an Operation Havana DLC would be neat. I feel like northern Midwest cities would just be more of Fallout 3 and 4. Euro or Aussie would be cool, too.

Because they don't make money with qulity anymore. The ymake it with subscriptions, and those come with a big list of recognizable IPs, big names and big budget looking shit. Once you subscribe they make money, and what happens later doesn't matter. The part when you enjoy the product is simple the least relevant part, if relevant at all. Why put effort in something that literlaly doesn't matter and it would probably jsut be more expensive and time consuming?

If any of you worked in the industry you'd know how industry brained you get. Trying to inject something outside of that info the industry without being consumed is nearly impossible. It's lightning in a bottle.

Majority of the time you bend and twist into some combination of the two.

The only reason any of this stuff is made is money, they already have existing fans money, they want new customers so the change incentivizes that. They figure "if you don't already like it why would you like it 1:1 in another medium" so they adapt and change to pull in all the people who aren't already fans. They want your gf (not that any of you have one) to want to watch the show week to week.

      >What's the point of using an IP if you don't want the fans?
Because what /misc/ thinks "the fans" mean are the comic book guy obsessives (eg star wars & harry potter stans) who base their personality around their media choice, and viciously attack anyone who they deem to be "unworthy" of their children's TV show or video game or comic book adaptation, or whose opinion differs (eg shippers).
What network executives mean by "the fans" are anyone whose heard of the source media in any way and maybe liked an old version of it.
Most people don't care about "woke shit" or "historical accuracy" or "this type of stormtrooper wasn't in use until the 20 years after darth vader died according to an obscure, non-canon tie-in book no-one but them has read in 15 years, the showrunner is a KEK and he's KILLED star wars for putting it in 15 years after darth vader died".
All regular people & execs care about is name recognition of the IP, and a vague "accuracy". Writers don't care either, they aren't researching decades old shit just so they don't offend CloneTrooper1488 because they gave a bit character the name of someone white then casting took that bit character and picked a black actor because he was the best actor who showed up to audition for it.

and if you think the opinions of actual fans don't matter, if you think you're still going to get normie viewers after the first impressions of your ~~*adaptation*~~ are from actual fans-- the people most likely to participate with and critique and care about your product-- that you butchered the frick out of it and didn't remain faithful to the source, you're completely delusional and you deserve every ounce of misery coming your way.

He's right for the wrong reasons. They wouldn't understand but the fanbase is really divided with what games are actually good so it really would be impossible to please everyone. But this is just director with massive ego is incapable of being humble when they get any sort of criticism from fans of ip who they view as beneath them.

If the fanbase is divided just stick to the original iconic stuff. It wouldn't be a famous IP if there was none before brand mismanagement.
It works for every single IP out there

But it won't have 90s pixels, moron?
And premise was that the shit that 18-35 yos played weren't good entries in the franchise, moron?

We are back to "fricking leave the IP alone, then", moron

Stck to the basics, stick to the iconic, or suffer, becasue you cannot manifacture love

You adapt the good and non divisive shit that made the IP popular, yes.
Framing it as bad won't make it so.

Lolwut? No, some people find classic Fallout too annoying to play since they're old school isometric RPGs, but there's no dispute they're kino and there's especially no dispute New Vegas is kino it's the perfect fusion of nu gameplay and classic FO
You can't deny New Vegas. Don't be a lying israelite in this thread.

the only two fallout games I didn't love were Tactics (which many people enjoy and very few people claim to dislike, I just couldn't get into it) and some super shitty spinoff i played on the PS2 called Brotherhood of Steel.

It would be extremely easy to please Fallout fans, they've probably only played Fallout 4 so they didn't know that there are hundreds of already existing storylines they could run with.

Gamers are the dumbest demographic on the planet who continue to purchase not only low quality garbage but low quality garbage from game companies that hate them.
Gamers WILL watch this and they WILL pay to watch this and then they'll cry about it and continue paying.
    They never ever ever learn.

I agree if it’s your own passion project. If it’s a big IP with lifelong fans, no. You should try to be true to the source material and make them happy.

Videogame adaptations are made bad on purpose because writers don't want people to realize they own writing quality isn't much better than the average videogame.

You can't please the fans because you adapt franchises you know nothing about make it for the Twitter audience (the ones who praise the diversity but don't end up watching it anyways) THEN you blame the fans when it flops.

It's really just a shame Ayn Rand lived too early on to adapt video games for the screen.

The only interesting thing about this TV show is the fact that Todd spilled Fallout 5's entire plotline to them so they could avoid spoilers as part of their contract, and the idea that we might see some leaks about that in the upcoming months.

There used to be a kind of director who would do movies the way they wanted, like Kubrick with the Shining, where he couldn't give two shits about Stephen King and his bullshit book and just did whatever the frick he wanted with it. But he rarely did interviews.

Just stop making these directors do press, do whatever the frick you want with the material and have people love it or hate it, whatever. The viewership will determine the success of it. What they say after seems to only do more damage.
