I genuinely enjoyed it. It's mediocre at worst.

I genuinely enjoyed it.

It's mediocre at worst. My only criticisms are that it should've been more shocking and over the top. A second civil war is an insane scenario. It would work better as an HBO series, reminded me of Jericho.

Is this actually good or just better than what Garland pooped out?

We have little to no good alternate timeline/history films. I've already watched most of them.

        >a comedy directed by none other than Joe Dante
        >top-notch cast
        vs
        >a "serious movie" directed by a very competent Garland
        >a shit scenario by Garland

There should have been more scenes of them encountering conflicts as they got closer to the capital but they just go the lazy route and go
    >lol they gave up! It’s a clear path to DC
should have shown them fighting tooth and nail to the White House

I liked it too. My criticism would be that they didn't utilise the photography aspect as well as they could have. I think they could have told more of the story through photographs, like you see in Savageland. I guess that becomes too artsy for mainstream audiences though.
Also, the degree to which the journalists were allowed to wander around in tense firefights between military forces seemed ridiculous. Are press really allowed to use tanks as cover and get to clear buildings room-by-room with the soldiers?

it was dull. for most of the runtime i was just thinking how i'd rather be watching southland tales, the superior "america falling apart in the near future" picture

The same people who like this movie definitely have WWZ as one of their favorite books. Both definitely give off a sense of realism, but in reality, the creators only care about aesthetics. It makes everything in both feel half-assed, and thus, it drags every other aspect of the film/book.

      >WWZ gives off a sense of realism

shut the frick up you idiot. you clearly have no idea what this film was trying to do at all. it wasn't even sci-fi.

this movie appealed to me because I've seen Ingmar Bergman's Shame and Denis Villeneuve's Incendies, both of which were aiming for a similar universalizing approach to a war by ignoring the background causes and focusing on the human impact of the conflict.

it's not mediocre at all, it's genuinely great and his best film since Ex Machina.
unfortunately it depends on audiences understanding what kind of movie they're watching and accepting it on its own terms instead of screeching autistically.

    >Are press really allowed to use tanks as cover and get to clear buildings room-by-room with the soldiers?
its not a modern embeddment situation because documenting the war would be politically very important for trying to reunify the country.
especially if you're literally storming the White House, you really would want a record of exactly what happened: especially confirmation that Offerman was dead to demoralize his remaining support.

      >if you're literally storming the White House, you really would want a record of exactly what happened
You're telling me photographic evidence of soldiers executing unarmed people who are trying to surrender is desirable by the side doing the executing? I get that it happened because movie, but it was a little silly.
I do think the scene where the president is killed was really good though. His final words and the callback to what the old Black said were well done.

It was pretty good, lacked world building and the last part was moronic.
Why would the president be in the oval office? What was the point of the decoy? Why did they kill him?
