That's the cut version they used. They went back and reanimated it into the Joker accidentally electrocuting himself because that was less scary than just getting shot in the heart for kids. The comic's just adapting the edited version.
I always liked it too, I like how wacky and cartoony it could get and also I dig the no make up, makes him look more surreal even if it's not really clownish.
It's a continuation of the first series. It was just a style change. Some characters were drastically changed until Justice League reverted those like Joker.
TNBA is the Batman cartoon Timm and Dini clearly wanted to make, without most of the network bullshit that plagued them in BTAS, so it makes more sense that they would decide to start fresh and have almost no ties to the old cartoon beyond some intentionally-vague mentions here and there (again, barring their golden Emmy-boy Mr. Freeze). I mean, they totally disregarded Zatanna's prior appearance in BTAS for Justice League and essentialy just said "Oh, she has magic powers now... what, before? Uh, she was hiding them".

Even BTAS plays loose with continuity in and of itself, don't think too much of it. It just has never been a priority for them. It's all the same universe it just has canon errors like any other shared universe also artstyle does not effect an universe if that was a case no comics would fit into each other.

Exactly. I'm not saying the comic tie-ins fit in or anything either, but it's like how James Bond movies used to be. You just accepted that 50 year old Roger Moore was also 45 year old Connery and both of them were also Lazenby who was like 30 and married, and then they become Brosnan years later.
Imo the best Scarecrow design was the 2nd one but it only looked good in the comics, I like the redsigns and streamline artstyle but always felt Scarecrow was too far removed from the character even more than Joker. Scarecrow meant to be skinny little guy who isn't really threating looking till you mess with him, kinda lose that with the redesign.
The issue with his previous looks is he's just not scary. Kinda a problem when his whole thing is fear. It's the underbite. He looks too goofy. The redesign works because he looks more intimidating even if it's all an illusion.
Scarecrow thing is he uses fear gas, he doesn't need to look scary, he can play it up with fucking with people also the redesign removes the Scarecrowness of him makes him look like an evil priest, Crane's a nerd and kinda of a loser that why you don't except him to be a threat.
Fear gas is a crutch that the character shouldn't rely entirely on.

The fear gas is the entire point of the character. Yes, the gas is a crutch, that's the point. It's like saying the Mad Hatter's mind-control hats are a crutch when it's just what the character even is.
A disagree. An already scary design should be part of his gimmick before the fear gas flows out to make it even worse for the victim.
Again though that's a problem. He needs to LOOK like a threat. No one's taking a guy seriously when he's a string bean in rags & burlap without something to back it up. Just the look goes a long way.

I always like that aspect about the Scarecrow no one takes him seriously until he proves it and I enjoy the cartoonish nature of him bending around looking a bit wacky.

That's fine characterization but even that design is scary looking. If anyone should have tryhard designs to look scary, it's Scarecrow. Everyone else works the opposite way of simplicity being key.

His characterization, he feels too serious in TNBA like Scarecrow should be theatrical.

The fear gas backs it up. Otherwise he's a college chemistry professor not some scary badass.

That very episode disagrees. The gas fucks with your mind, that's the whole point. Should the Mad Hatter be some giant jacked dude that looks like he could kick your ass without his mind-controlled minions? Of course not, that's not what the character is. Both Mad Hatter and Scarecrow are threats because of the tech they wield not because of themselves, it's the core of their characters. Compare that to someone like Joker who IS terrifying by himself.

Again it's a costume. It's intimidation. Mad Hatter doesn't work on fear. He's a manipulator through technology. The look for Scarecrow works because it makes the FEAR BASED villain look SCARIER even if he's a dork underneath it.

What this anon said but Joker shouldn't even be an physical threat, Batman should be able to take him out in like one punch.

uh yes it would tard that's exactly how fear gas works
I feel like that would be more of a problem if it wasn't a costume. If the man himself was actually bulky and physically intimidating it would be an issue, but you can see even from just the screenshot that he's still scrawny, and just putting on a scarier face doesn't seem too off-brand.
I always thought this is too much. Crane is a dork, the kind of stupid-looking scarecrow man original design is perfect for him. He scares people with his fear gas, without it he's a dweeb. He shouldn't be intimidating by himself.
But it fits thematically with the fear gas. Illusions of fear. His costume is an illusion making him look bigger & scarier than he really is underneath.
Thought on the original character designs in Bruce Timm's actual artstyle? TNBA style is closer to how Bruce actually draws but I guess because of animation production at the time and the studios BTAS they had to make it more rubbery and 3d dimensional and less flat, it be kinda neat to see something animate his style how he actually draws I guess it be closer to like Dexter's Lab or PPG with the flatter animation and thick outlines.
>TNBA style is closer to how Bruce actually draws but I guess because of animation production at the time and the studios BTAS they had to make it more rubbery and 3d dimensional and less flat
BTAS had a lot of artists involved in production, so it was a compromise of a lot of them- Plus Timm wanting to imitate both the Fleischer Superman feel and Alex Toth. So he was intentionally making it look different from his more cartoony styles coming off Animaniacs..and to be fair, the Timm style we really know was still in development during BTAS. You should see his tryout pages for the Batman comics in the 80's
One thing that's kind of lost is just how different BTAS looked like from other action cartoons even at the time
He always did the heavy outlines which I remember in the DVD commentary during the DKR part of Legends Of The Dark Knight they want that to have thick outlines but they couldn't figure out how the other shows did it.
It's not that bad. I think it grew on me over time, even if it's a bit oversimplified compared to the BTAS one. The lack of lipstick really takes away from the colorful palette of the character.
>and prefer it over the one they used for the Batman Beyond movie
I'd love to see a fanedit of the flashback scene with the TNBA design. And then future Joker just has the normal eyes, since it's not his original body.
I will now defend the most hated redesign of this series by saying I like the idea that this is an Eddie who's completely snapped and become the Riddler full time. I know the suit look is classier, but the full body suit look came before the suit so it's nice to see it homaged in a way.
It's crazy how good those were >The comic with Joe Chille haunted by Bruce wayne due to guilt, with him seeing batman with his mask off right before he dies causing him to let go and die, batman never finding out who he was
The eyes are unique but they don't make much sense & the lack of red lipstick sucks.
Lips always look bad in cartoons
It's part of Joker's iconic look. It's needed.
>That in-between design the comics used when the new design came out.
See that looks way better. Even if the red lips aren't pronounced most of the time, the change in eyes alone looks a lot better with this design.
They rewrote this scene for the comic? Why?
That's the cut version they used. They went back and reanimated it into the Joker accidentally electrocuting himself because that was less scary than just getting shot in the heart for kids. The comic's just adapting the edited version.
I like it a lot too, it feels very streamlined and sleek, and the eerie eyes go a long way.
I always liked it too, I like how wacky and cartoony it could get and also I dig the no make up, makes him look more surreal even if it's not really clownish.
I thought it was horrible. Every design in the New Batman Adventures was a step down.
>Every design in the New Batman Adventures was a step down.
Now I wouldn't say that.
So was TNBA a different story or just a soft reboot from BTAS?
It's a continuation of the first series. It was just a style change. Some characters were drastically changed until Justice League reverted those like Joker.
Soft reboot. The only subplots that carried over was Clayface's death in "Mudslide" and Mr. Freeze in general.
It's not soft reboot it's the same universe just different art.

Yeah, even as someone who thinks most of the redesigns suck, Scarecrow is fucking killer. Probably the best look he's ever had IMO.
Imo the best Scarecrow design was the 2nd one but it only looked good in the comics, I like the redsigns and streamline artstyle but always felt Scarecrow was too far removed from the character even more than Joker. Based on the fact they cast Jeffrey Combs as the voice, I imagine he still looks like a relatively harmless guy under the costume.
This is a neat design, but it's more zombie pastor than scarecrow.
The hint we get of Scarecrow's true appearance is that slender, deathly pale forearm.
I prefer the TNBA Ivy to be honest
I like it too. He look sinhuman, like an imp
It makes no damn sense he looks like an animaniac
Thought on the original character designs in Bruce Timm's actual artstyle? Meh. Like I do also like the design and think the hate for it is over blown but the original is so much better.
the Batman Beyond design is better then this but this is better then the Justice League design which used a hideous shade of purple
>i genuinely really like this Joker design
It's not that bad. I think it grew on me over time, even if it's a bit oversimplified compared to the BTAS one. The lack of lipstick really takes away from the colorful palette of the character.

Okay, let's not get crazy.

It looks better in the tie-in comics.
That's because the tie-in comics are better than the shows, hot take but it's true.
It's crazy how good those were
