You had to be there for Akira. In 1990, when I first saw it, it was fricking amazing. Ghost in Shell is ok, but it was already part of the first wave of slop. A better example is Cyber City Oedo 808. Basically 80s and early 90s anime. They were still experimenting then. The rest is souless weaponized slop.

In this case the Japanese audio sounds more reserved and reflective while the English dub sounds cheap and cartoonish

I recommend reading the original manga if you liked SAC, it's actually closer in tone to that than the movie by Oshii.

akiras good and i dont watch anime. Its animated really well. Its from the 80s and still looks better then most modern stuff. And for the dubs, they went and re animated the lips. So you can warch it in english, french, german, and the lips match what you hear
people who read the manga itself are pretty iffy on it, because its huge, 6 books, like a thousand pages. Every character you see in the movie has enough pages to be its own movie. Its like turni;g lord of the rings, plus the hobbit into a 30 minute short. Its done well, but when you see the clowns getting like 15 minites screen time, it might be disapointing.
