It was a movie about him sitting around eating twinkies and it was called The Fatso Menace.

I heard this but am skeptical. I don't know why he wouldn't just admit he was the director. I haven't been able to find any information on what the film was either.

    >I don't know why he wouldn't just admit he was the director
he doesn't want any attention, all the publicity of Star Wars and backlash to the prequels broke him. he said awhile ago right after he sold Star Wars that he wanted to continue to make movies and only show them in his private theater, never release them. you can find the quote somewhere. so this is actually in character.

It's not in character if he's releasing them at festivals. That goes against what he said.

not if he's doing it anonymously
if he makes a cool little movie under a fake name and people like it, that's great. that can't happen if it has George Lucas on it.

can you not see the progression from "I'm gonna make private films" to "okay, I'll just release them under a pseudonym"? that is a very logical step to make after nearly a decade to change your mind. at some point during development, he realized he would be more fulfilled if he released it, but still didn't want any of the attention that came with it. it tracks.

        under a pseudonym
this is the first i hear of this rumor and i have no idea if it is true but that would be a compromise between never releasing any of his projects and being burdened by overshadowing expectations
a lot of reputed artists have attempted to strive for creative liberty by using pseudonyms so lucas would hardly be the first

    >I don't know why he wouldn't just admit he was the director.

    >“You go to make a movie and all you do is get criticized, and people try to make decisions about what you’re going to do before you do it. You know, it’s not much fun,” Lucas said.

    >The THX founder went on to grouse, “You can’t experiment. You can’t do anything. You have to do it a certain way. I don’t like that — I never did. I started out in experimental films, I want to go back to experimental films, but of course nobody wants to see experimental films.”

    >When asked if that last statement foreshadowed what we can expect next from the famed director, Lucas said, “I will be directing movies, but not movies, generally, that will be shown anywhere.”

let's track back, where did you hear the rumor?

It's just hard to imagine. If you look at THX, which was based off his USC student films - his "tone poems" - it's a political film. Callow, but still political. It's a future dystopia lifted from Orwell and Huxley where the robot enforcers are dressed like US traffic cops and they poke the dehumanized drone slaves with their long exaggerated nightsticks. Because it was the sixties and the cops were like, frickin' robots man, frickin' fascist robots!

Will the perfectly comfortable and sheltered George Lucas of the present day be able to channel an inner anger or revive enough of the hippy spirit of protest to make a film like THX again? I just don't see it.

who says it has to be a political allegory? maybe he's into mumblecore, or a completely plotless visual montage like a lot of NFB short films.

usually when an accomplished artist uses a psudonym for a work, they can't help themselves and leave a lot of telltale signs of their signature and style all over the new work even if they don't want to. or people would take notice of a singular work of art directed by a no-name nobody coming out of nowhere and (no)showing up at a festival. i have no idea how that would manifest in the case of lucas but i think his movie would be detected even under a pseudonym before long.

I guess if you knew him well enough to know you're looking at his work, you'd presumably be nice enough to keep the secret that he clearly wants kept

Yes!! I heard this as well. Buddy of mine who’s on the programming board for SNIFF (San Nicholás International Film Festival) said there was one particular submission far exceeding the quality of everything else. When the director was contacted for an interview by the festival, he used a voice modulator over the phone, and kept referring to himself as “DJ Colonel Lingus.” Very suspicious stuff. I’d have to double check with my friend what the film was but I’m pretty sure it was: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt21622382

well, it'd be a tiny experimental indie film, and I think if you're at the stage of your career where you work on tiny experimental indie films, you would not want to make an enemy out of one of the most powerful men in the industry

for what's it's worth, i don't think lucas would have trouble assembling a crew loyal to him.
but again i think we're dealing with a made up rumor in this thread. if we just knew one film festival where the film would have played, we could look into it for a film or a director that sticks out, but we don't even know the source of the rumor that two people here claim to have heard.

        good points on both
I hope it's true 2bh, he said he set aside a couple hundred million to just make little experimental movies with, but I really like the idea of him releasing ones he's proud of into the wild to see what people think.

yeah me too, i love thx 1138 and some of the experimental NFB short films that Lucas singled out as source of inspiration for him. but i could also see him never following through with that. since he never bothered doing anything small-scal experimental after star wars.
i've never heard lucas mention putting aside huge sums of money for these projects though.

            >i've never heard lucas mention putting aside huge sums of money for these projects though.
I think it was the big Charlie Rose interview. He said everyone he knows has a huge yacht, and instead he took that big yacht money and is using it to fund little experimental films
            >I'm gonna make movies that only I wanna see and I wanna do. I've always wanted to do that. I fell into popular movies by accident. I always disliked Hollywood theatrical movies. I didn't want anything to do with them.

              >So for the next phase of his career, Lucas plans to go back to his American Graffiti and THX 1138 roots and play with the filmmaking as best he can: "I've been fascinated with the true nature of the medium — it's been used more as a recording medium, than as an art form unto itself." Speaking about tone poems in Russia, Lucas says he hopes to look at how to "tell visual stories, basically without dialogue, without all the things you use to tell a story, and you just use the film itself. It's kind of esoteric, it hasn't come much further in one hundred years. I'm going to try and take it into something that is more emotionally powerful than most of the stuff we've done up to this point."

god damnit it I want him to have made something like this and I want to see it.

It would be something like this:

George Lucas saw this at a film festival and rang up the director and said that it was exactly the kind of movie that he wished he could still make himself and that he would finance whatever the director wanted to make next.

... The director's next movie was a bit shit, but so it goes...

ah okay. i have no idea what kind of projects he had in mind when he said about his experimental projects in 2012, like uncommercial long-form narrative films or abstract filmmaking like stan brakckage or stuff that someone can do alone if they just have the vision, time and determination. i imagined more the latter personally. i'd expect he has all the equipment and facilities needed in his garage that would cost regular people two mortages and a half and he could do something interesting with it at little cost to him if he so desired.

the idea he mentioned of a pure visual story with no dialogue, that's interesting as hell. I always got the sense he thinks dialogue is a necessary evil at best, and was always trying to draw from silent movie traditions, but just through visual metaphor? that could be seriously cool.

Assuming that people who live likes kings have nothing to comment on or say is immature and such a 20th century opinion.

He corrected a film with Bai Ling. Long and complicated story, she was going to be in one of the Star Wars prequel trilogy films, but her role got cut due to her appearance in Playboy, everyone was saying it was him that insisted on it so that soured their relationship. Eventually he did see the article and it was all about breaking racial boundaries as she was the first Chinese centerfold, and the photo shoot marked the first time most Americans had seen a Chinese woman nude (this being the early days of the internet when people mainly used it for talking about sci-fi films and stuff and open was less ubiquitous as it took a while day to download a low res movie trailer, so you had to be really desperate and give up your phone calls for a day of you wanted decent filth so jazz mags were still the medium of choice). It was very brave and empowering of her, without her selfless sacrifice of her dignity films like Crazy Rich Asians and Shan chi would never have been made. Naturally George felt really guilty about how he had greeted the large nippled Asian star so caught to make amends by co-writing and co-directing her ground-breaking film "My Quarantine Romance With Toilet Paper" and giving her all the credit.

The film doesn't have a distributor yet, but has been described as being Tarentino-esque.
