I just finished The Shield. So he's supposed to be a bad guy?

I just finished The Shield. So he's supposed to be a bad guy? the only bad thing he did was in the first episode killing terry but after that he barely did anything bad. And the good he does heavily outweighs him killing terry. I thought he was supposed to be a "complicated protagonist" but he's just ur typical good guy.

Killing Terry really feels out of character after you've finished the entire show.

      Anonymous

Not really, Vic would do anything to save his own ass and in the final episodes he has no problem with the idea of killing a pregnant woman and her son. What was out of character was Vic’s smirk and shake of his head, felt cartoonish

I think Shane killing Lem made sense if you consider the fact that Shane worshipped Vic, and that since Vic killed Terry, Shane killing Lem would be fine since it would essentially be for the same reason.

      Anonymous

He's a crooked cop who puts ends above means but receives his comeuppance in various ways. As a direct consequence of his actions he ends up making an enemy of his best friend, getting his team killed, loses his family, and is relegated to a desk job. It's also allegorical to the law and institutions of people in general, since we see aceveda and the federal agencies are not clean either. It's a good show, even if its silly at times.

That's typical for a pilot episode of TV, you're showing executives a preview of the arc of the entire series. It's similar to how Walt already goes heisenberg at the end of the BB pilot, only to revert to his meekish persona for the rest of season and needing to build back to that point later. Just don't think about it too much.

But yeah non-pilot Vic would have come up with a million other crazy plans to get rid of terry before resorting to killing him. Although you can argue that the reason he's so determined not to cross lines in the rest of the series is a certain guilt he only recognizes after killing terry.

ronnie getting arrested hurt in a strange way. he did everything right and got screwed by vic despite holding the line. he probably doesnt wind up in prison for life but its enough that it ruins his life and hell never recover. and he doesnt even get a chance to escape, just walked to the slaughter

          Anonymous

Ronnie's in for life. He's an accessory to at least 3 murders, grand larceny, and violating the civil rights of civilians. And he probably gets shanked in his first month in the big house.

            Anonymous

what murders is he accessory to? he can dismiss participating in terrys murder (he wasnt expressly aware until years later), he might be implicated in the two dead guys at the money train (not murder charges themselves), and the armenian hitman (who he actually killed) wasnt mentioned and its attributed to the armenians. maybe vic laid that one out for them though. besides that how many crimes could there be any evidence tying him to commting beyond vics testimony? anyways his life is ruined one way or another, even if he got out after 1 or 5 or 10 years, hes middle aged, narrow career path hes locked out of, excon, no pension.

I've seen this exact dynamic IRL a bunch of times and you have to be a moron to be surprised by any of it.
skylar stuck around while expressing her displeasure in the typical woman way. corrine took the kids and bailed on him then filed for divorce out of nowhere.

You're a fricking idiot. Vic is a cold-blooded killer who coerces perps and abuses the shit out of his badge. He actively makes decent people around him [Lem] act like thugs and he justifies it by beating around perps.

    Vic is an butthole.

Vic brainwashes the entire team into believing all that "we’re a family" bullshit. It got Ronnie arrested in the end. He felt like the only natural corrupt cop out of the 4, being criminal came easy to him. Shane on his own was incompetent and he couldn’t be like Vic. They all pretty much did everything he told them to

What they did to O’Brien was completely fricked
    >frame a man whose only crimes were putty theft
    >ends up getting brutally murdered for something he didn’t do
    >Strike team burns his body, practically wiping him from existence. No one knows he’s dead

Everyone is forgetting Vic covered up the death of an innocent insurance salesman when his prostitute friend Connie shot him in cold blood

He made the right call. Sucks for that guy, but he was fricking a prostitute, so he's already responsible for risking his reputation with his family. Connie likely would have gone to jail and the kid would have gone to a foster home, worse than jail.

Vic was just Sipowicz tuned up to 11.

Even had analogous scenes, like which Sipowicz also did. Though that guy died of a heart attack, not murder.

GODDAMNIT DUTCH, WHAT OTHER ERRANDS DO YOU HAVE US RUNNING FOR THE DA!!?

She was by far the best actress on the show, even when Glenn Close was the police chief. The scene when she makes it to the DEA just too late to stop Mackey's confession was so good.

I have a friend like that, he even looks the same. He destroys everything that surrounds him and every fix just makes new bigger problems.
    I wish we never met.

They could make a movie out of it. Destroys his own sister which was bank manager with degree in economics by dragging her into fake university diplomas scheme that went political.
