I love it when Matt Damon will just casually explain the business side of acting

He’s done it so many times in interviews over the years and it’s great how he’s able to so effortlessly break down complicated ideas about acting and Hollywood and synthesize them so anyone can understand. Here’s to examples of that

Somehow this isn't the case. A good story is what appeals to anyone no matter the demographic, and a good story is one that doesn't need to pander to any demographic. When we pander to these demographics we loose social cohesion because you need to make an asian film about asian culture in asian america, only asians will give a frick about that. Blacks, Latinos, whites won't. In fact if it's a Korean family, you won't get Chinese interested. The ironic part of this all is that many races seethe at Anglo/israeli Americans ability to make peak film and storytelling, the idolize and seek out to be like white people which is why they either move to America and other western countries, or they try to adopt a McDonalds society in their own Asian markets, having the excesses without the freedoms.

Teaching is just like any other job, where they expect you go work off the books in order for you to get ahead. You can just stick to your guns and do everything on the clock, and they can wage their war against you and you can just leave and find something else. Do that enough times and employers stop fricking with employees.

The actual answer is that it's stable work with a good union, lots of time off, regular hours And most importantly: student loan forgiveness. I was always mystified growing up that there were teachers who seemed to genuinely dislike kids, some of whom would openly talk about how they were worthy of a much better job. Then I found out about the loan forgiveness scheme, and it all clicked. You go to college, graduate, maybe work in your field a few years before you realize it doesn't pay and you have massive debt. So you take a teaching gig, possibly in your field, and then you wind up rotting in it for thirty years.
There are some awesome teachers out there, but the American public education system is absolute shit, and the way it's organized encourages incompetent and disinterested, if not outright predatory, people to stay in for decades.

it's a completetly fricked situation because libs will just go "make them unfireable, strengthen the union blabla theyre so important" while conservatives will just kneejerk go against everything to the point of pretending it's not a valuable profession

Conservatives are for school vouchers and increased choice while libs run against it so they can continue to troon out and molest kids.

Public schools have an issue with funding and voucher schools only exist to guy public schools even further while enriching people running private schools that don’t actually guarantee any kind of better grades. Private schools are also awful if your kid have any kinds of special needs like wheelchair access etc. because that’s the first thing private schools don’t want to spend any money on.

do you honestly believe physical sales are anywhere close to what they were 15 years ago?

the vast majority of normies are watching on a streaming service, not even overpaying for a "digital copy". so cool, studios are still spending $100 million on a streaming exclusive movie, but it gets lost in the sea of garbage and doesn't move the needle in terms of additional subscribers. that's why the studios refuse to publicly release actual viewing numbers and all the unions agreed to be able to look at them in private but not release them

DVDs used to sell for $5-10 on average. BluRay was touted as a premium format and sold as such. It's the same thing as the store brand hot pockets your mom gets you being slightly lower quality but a better value than the name brand ones. When the mid-grade market option disappeared it took that portion of the revenue the film generates with it in a way that BluRay never replicated, this placing a greater onus on initial box office proceeds due to the Reliability of the home marketplace vanishing. Matt likely could've elaborated how the profit split between studios & digital services is much worse than that between studios & DVD manufacturers leading to an even lower return on investment via streaming or VOD, not to mention that DVD rental shops like Blockbuster & Hollywood Video would contribute to DVD sales by their need to fill consumer demands.
But he likely didn't say all that because he wanted to remain concise and not ramble on from point to point like I have.

blue-ray came out and had a fight with hd toshiba, by the time blue ray came on top streaming was already happening gay, it was over, blue ray didn't make sense anymore that price wasn't down enough to make it have sense. by the time blue ray got to 100 bucks a player it was basically dead in the water.

And now post-strike that system is partially back in place again, or something that effectively does a similar thing. So we might actually start getting some decent films again.

I can’t remember who it was, but I saw a clip from an interview with some famous actor the other day about the best piece of advice he’d ever gotten and it was something like
      >Can you picture yourself still doing this if the end of the road for you is teaching an acting class at some high school in Seattle? Because that’s where pursuing this leads to for the majority of most people.
      >If you can’t see yourself being happy doing that, then you need to get out now and find something else to do
The point there being that for both teachers and actors and tons of other low paying jobs what Matt said was very true: the people that do it genuinely do it because they love it. And failing to understand that basic point is how you arrive at flawed premises like the interviewer's

It's just as well they don't make real movies anymore. I can't stand the sight of every single person holding a cell phone. It's just so dehumanizing.

Huge P&A spend is the culprit. A24 relies on social media monkes to push clickbait narratives on their $10M budget "arthouse/auteur" slop. This trend was SPED UP by famous names taking easy checks from streamers, lbh

The first one is him explaining why actors, teachers, and people in many other professions aren’t motivated by job insecurity, but rather passion for their craft. And the second is him explaining the economic factors of why Hollywood no longer makes the same type of mid budget interesting movies he orginally got famous for starring in, and why they now only produce the biggest most colossal tent pole event features or teeny tiny little independent movies with 25 production companies funding them and a micro budget of $2 million and no other types of movies in between.

When was this? I had the exact same video camera as that dude on the right. It was called a flip camera. I don't remember anything particularly good or special about it other than that it had a USB thing that could plug directly into a computer.
