World of Kanako was actually darker than I Saw the Devil because IStD was about some uninverse where everyone is a serial killer like John Wick but World of Kanako is way more effective in peeling back layers to show hidden fricked up shit
maybe this thread just isn't for you
The thing I loved about the chases was that the characters didn't have infinite stamina like in most movies. They looked exhausted which most average people would be running up and down hills for any extended amount of time
What if I said Shrek 3 lol omg yes

I need recommendations for movies like this. Serial killer/mystery ones with the same atmosphere.
The Good The Bad The Weird is fricking incredible and really not that well known I find in most places. Just great stuff, without it and Oldboy I wouldn't have taken the dive in Korean movies.
Pic related is right up your alley
Seconded; it, Se7en and Memories of Murder are imo the definitive serial killer thrillers from the perspective of the police.
Insomnia (the Norwegian one not the American remake) has Stellan Skarsgard playing an insomniac detective who pursues a serial killer while slowly losing control of himself.
If you want a movie from the perspective of a serial killer, The House That Jack Built is good albeit more concerned with allegory than telling a thrilling story.
I also think it's highly overrated but if this is the worst movie you've ever seen then you need to watch more movies.
The House That Jack Built is brutal lmao. I'll check out Insomnia, cheers
No I haven’t seen those movies and I know they are leagues better than I saw the devil
The whole catch and release shit in the movie would have worked if the other guy was there to catch him again immediately. He just keeps letting the guy go and rape / murder more people then shows up like a day or two later to catch him
Yeah no shit the guy will find a way to come after you now
Such a fricking idiotic story with idiotic character acting like idiots
Waste of time
Yes the main chara is absolutely reckless and stupid by doing this. It's the point. I know a place where a well written main protagonist means a character that does everything correctly and is morally good. It's called Twitter
Revenge thriller meets torture porn (a softcore brand of torture porn, nowhere near the Hostels or the Saws of the world, and at least it has actual purpose in this movie).
It's a good movie but in terms of quality it's not anywhere near The Chaser and not even in the same galaxy as Memories of Murder.
The Chaser resembles it the most. It's a grim movie and has similar beats. Incredible performance by the lead and seriously claustrophobic / stressful, much more so than I Saw The Devil. Also way more emotional weight and better writing.
Memories of Murder's similarities ends at "serial killer". It employs a lot more comedy and is just one of the greatest movies ever made. In a better world that movie would have gotten its cast nominations for at least best film and best directing. Oh well, Parasite at least earned Bong Joon-ho his due.
Same for The Wailing, employs a lot more comedy, no revenge angle and emotionally harrowing.
My Korean recommendations: The Chaser. The Cop, the Gangster, the Devil. Oldboy. Sympathy for Mr Vengeance. The latter two are nowhere near as violent but the theme of vengeance is omnipresent and they're suitably dark movies.
I also recommend The Green Room. A brutal claustrophobic film that deserves to be more well known
Will all that said: all the movies recommended in this thread are fricking incredible, most of them are pure kino.
Serial killer murdershis pregnant wife so he puts a tracker in him and keeps letting him off when he's just at death's door, to prolong the punishment.

Also since people are bringing up The Chaser, we can talk about the pure kino that is this chase scene.
In general the film uses the locales extremely well. By the end of the movie you pretty much know the neighbourhood where a lot of those scenes take place
The thing I loved about the chases was that the characters didn't have infinite stamina like in most movies. They looked exhausted which most average people would be running up and down hills for any extended amount of time
For those who want to watch Lady Vengeance: I recommend the version with the colours fading out as the film goes on. Also >mfw you'll never be seduced by an older lady
While not being as dark as I Saw The Devil, The World of Kanako is also a mystery movie with deranged Asian men in a deranged chase doing deranged things. Different tone but highly recommend it.
World of Kanako was actually darker than I Saw the Devil because IStD was about some uninverse where everyone is a serial killer like John Wick but World of Kanako is way more effective in peeling back layers to show hidden fricked up shit
When I say ISTD is darker than Kanako I mean in tone and atmosphere, using brighter lighting and tone to contrast the twisted plot. It switches moods at some points but it's all done intentionally.
In sheer 'twistedness', I agree that Kanako beats I Saw The Devil.
I will second and add to some of the ones already mentioned
Memories of murder
Green room
Blue ruin
Se7en
Vengeance trilogy
Burning
House that jack built
Girl with the dragon tattoo
Prisoners
You were never really here
Monster
Silence of the lambs
Zodiac
Mandy
If you want TV recs mindhunter is worth a watch and I think Hannibal is a masterpiece.
1)Zodiac
2)Memories of Murder
3)Pledge
4)Nature of the beast 1995 with Henriksen( very low budget, but i enjoyed it)
5)Execution( recent Russian movie, not sure if its translated)
Uhhhmmm let me think about this... hmmmm..... Shrek? Hahahaha you got trolled dude. Shrek! Haaaaaa. I'm so random hahahahaha.
The Wailing.
Dude you should've said Shrek 2 that would've been soooooo funny!
Paranormal≠serial killer movies
More low key than above but still hits hard.
This film was so fricking good, it reminded me of a novel, so visceral and grounded.
Trust me, it's kino
Also this.
Tremendously overrated movie that plays out like a 2-episode season ending of some police procedural show like Criminal Minds or some similar shit.
No, you are just a homosexual. It's Kino af and everybody should watch it.
What if I said Shrek 3 lol omg yes
shrek 3 OP!
this. The Chaser is one of the closest things to it in terms of atmosphere.
Mother is pretty great too
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1216496/?ref_=tt_sims_tt_i_6
Chaser and Memories of Murder are also kino. Korean cinema was going really strong that decade.
MoM is in my top 10 I love it so much.
Maybe you like on of these yellow sea, a bittersweet life, the handmaiden , man from nowhere
unrelated but the good, the bad and the weird is kino with song kang ho and lee byung hun in top formgajsw

Green Room is kino of the higher order. I second this.
Green Room has some is tense and brutal. Pure kino
Serial killer murdershis pregnant wife so he puts a tracker in him and keeps letting him off when he's just at death's door, to prolong the punishment.
parasite.
Ever since I saw this film I have been in complete amazement at the absolute Horseshit some of you losers think is kino
I saw the devil is genuinely the worst movie I have ever seen
You've never seen Troll 2 or Waterworld?
Waterworld had great set designs and Hopper deserved a movie on his own.
No I haven’t seen those movies and I know they are leagues better than I saw the devil
The whole catch and release shit in the movie would have worked if the other guy was there to catch him again immediately. He just keeps letting the guy go and rape / murder more people then shows up like a day or two later to catch him

You have never experienced the warm embrace of sociopathy
Ah I see I’m not le damaged and hecking twisted enough to enjoy it huh?
Fair enough I’ll stick with trolls 2 reruns for the rest of my life and be happy I never have to rewatch this completely dog shit movie
maybe this thread just isn't for you

In case this is vague, I mean The World of Kanako does this, not I Saw The Devil.
