I think that The Phantom Menace is the best of the prequels.

I think that The Phantom Menace is the best of the prequels. It's pretty moronic in a lot of ways just like the other two, but it somehow captures the spirit of the original trilogy the best. Maybe that's because it used the most real sets. I think that there was a spark of genuine creativity and old Star Wars spirit in parts of The Phantom Menace that is almost totally gone in 2 and 3. It has that feeling of fantasy that has long since disappeared, especially with Disney. There are even some shots when they're on Tatooine that are genuinely good and remind you that George Lucas was a talented director at one point.

Yeah and all the promotion and related games and everything were the best. I saw that movie like 5 times in theaters when it came out. I don't know if I saw any other films twice even. It was a magical time.

The phantom menace had the least amount of ps2 graphics of the prequels. It was before lucas lost his mind and tried to do everything on greenscreen so it has amazing sets. Even the mattes are better in phantom menace. So much in the next 2 look after effects tier.

Yeah, TPM is the best of them. There's no Hayden Christiansen or any of the shoddy writing and dialogue that characterize the other two.
    >I HATE SAND
    >FROM MY POINT OF VIEW, THE JEDI ARE EVIL!
    >I HAVE SEEN A SECURITY HOLOGRAM OF HIM KILLING YOUNGLINGS

If you ignore Jar Jar, TPM is a decent enough adventure story.

I went to watch it last month in the theaters, and it was probably the most bored I have ever been watching a movie. A complete dredk
The only enjoyable scenes were the pod race and the maul duals.

All three prequel movies are pretty garbage, but the Phantom Menace is indeed the least garbage of them. It at least feels like an actual movie, albeit a shitty kids movie, while Ep 2 and 3 feel like watching cutscenes from a shitty PS2 game.

What was it about the TPM’s CGI that just looked so much… better? Comfy, even. AOTC and ROTS looked like proto marvel video games, but phantom’s looked so much more life like and real, especially with the droids.

I think mainly it was they were using the CGI for ships and battle droids instead of people. You didn't have any of the off-putting CGI clonetroopers or anything in TPM.

        >You didn't have any of the off-putting CGI clonetroopers
I was 10 years old when I saw Revenge of the Sith in the theater, and even then I remember thinking it was bizarre that the clone troopers were cgi despite being just dudes in plastic armor. I think that was the first time I ever viewed something in a movie critically. I realized deep in my maturing brain that what I was being presented wasn't quite right.

Real sets and being shot on film helped. But also because Lucas had a sense of confidence that was gone after the backlash. Episode 2 and 3 feel like he just wants to get them over with.

It’s tough, it definitely has the best SPFX of the series IMO. My mind was blown at how good it looked when I went back to rewatch. The OT looks like Dark Crystal or something half the time with the hokey effects and the latter prequels are really heavy on colorful CG.

I prefer RotS slightly, but TPM easily solos 90% of Star Wars movies. Heck, it's better than RotJ, which is carried hard by the throne room scene.

Outside of Jar Jar, I agree. The tone, atmosphere, and the way it is directed feels more like ANH.

Attack of the Clones feels too Noir-esque and Revenge feels too dark.
