I thought chess would a healthy intellectual hobby, but it has become an obsession.

I'm also developing an obsession with chess, I find it help me deal with alcoholic cravings and anger isusses(exept when I blunder in long time controls) it's also a good reason to stay sober in my freee time
there are much worse things to be obsessed about,as far as "gaming" goes it got to be the best for your brain

For a lot of people chess is like Mensa, something to signal to others how smart you are.

Chess is an overrated game with balance that relies on the two players having spent a similar amount of hours painstakingly memorizing openings and patterns; if one player doesn't have as many patterns memorized through sheer autism alone, then they're bound to lose. The amount of a time sink chess is compared with the enjoyment gained from playing it is pitiful compared to any other modern game. The only reason people care about it is that there were hardly any comparable games 200 years ago and we made the mistake of turning it into an institution which gave millions of nerds a pointless brainburner that isn't actually any fun. The fact that people think chess is "prestigious" or "intellectual" is an embarrassment to all other board games. What a joke.

this is a huge missconception about chess, most traines will forbid begginers to even bother with opening theory past like 3 moves
this is true at the top 5-10% of players at best, unless your are talking specifically about opening traps, most which usualy don't work against people with a working brain
If your are below 2200 your slight positional advantage form the opening won't mean shit it your opponent is better at tactics

why would you comment when you clearly don't play or have the slightest idea what you're talking about?

isn't he kinda right though? I'll always be a "beginner" chess player because I refuse to delve into theory and refuse to grind tactics and puzzle games on lichess for the purposes of improving my pattern recognition. isn't THAT what makes people better at chess?

it's what makes people better at blitz. playing with long or no time controls elevates the game to one of actual strategy and calculation.

you can learn the basics of the kings indiansystem in 15 minutes and it works for both white and black
it's a great for black in particular because you can play it against litteraly everything, google kings indian attack/defense/pirc defense and watch a 5-10 min video of each if you have 0 theory atm I guarantee just doing that is like +300 to whatever you rating is

Literally just knowing how each piece moves and trying to think a couple of moves ahead is enough to enjoy the game even against "meta" players
