Discovery Channel did a similar mocumentary with mermaids one time. My dad thought it was all real. His mind was blown by the 'evidence' they had on the show. Even after I explained to him it was fake, he still didn't believe me.

The whales were killing something big that wasn’t a whale. IIRC there was a grainy photo of trunko’s body washed up days after the attack.
It was probably a big chunk of whale blubber (explains why it was hairy looking and had one long trunk-like piece) but I want to believe.
