I was rewatching Evolution this evening for the first time in years. One of my favourite movies as a teenager when it came out and still really watchable now. Thought I’d check the Wikipedia article of it and wow, apparently I have shit taste.
>On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 44% based on 140 reviews, with an average score of 4.90/10. >The website's critical consensus reads, "Director Reitman tries to remake Ghostbusters, but his efforts are largely unsuccessful because the movie has too many comedic misfires." On Metacritic, the film received a score of 40 based on 32 reviews, indicating "mixed or average reviews". Audiences surveyed by CinemaScore gave the film a grade B+ on scale of A to F.
>Todd McCarthy of Variety called it "a consistently amusing action romp". Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times the film 2.5 out of 4, and wrote: "It's not good, but it's nowhere near as bad as most recent comedies; it has real laughs, but it misses just as many real opportunities". A. O. Scott of The New York Times wrote: "The movie itself evolves in reverse, starting life as a moderately clever grab bag of high-concept noodling and half-witty badinage before descending into the primordial ooze of explosions and elaborate lower- intestinal gags".
It’s not that bad is it? I always thought that this and Mars Attacks are on the same wavelength and everyone loves that.

I never pay attention to critics. About "mixed" feelings. I can tell something like Star Wars Acolyte is garbage by the type of press they have for it, and because ObiWan proved that Disney+ cannot make good stuff like Andor or Mando S01 consistently. But Evolution is just a good wholesome film. Great camera work, great performances. Clearly not edited as tightly as Ghosbusters but it is still a really great film. I have it on Blu-ray.

It’s pretty decent and definitely good compared to the shit we get for comedies nowadays. I think we just had a higher standard back when it came out

I do agree that the humor kind of leaves the movie in the final act and it’s just an action movie then

I think what hurt it in the end was the constant bombardment of "This is the new thing made by the guys that made Ghostbusters". It dominated the advertising in this movie so that probably caused people to compare it to Ghostbusters which yea it sucks in comparison to but was still good on its own

It's pretty good actually. Showcases a white dude nabbin a beautiful white redheaded woman. They don't allow that in entertainment anymore. It's basically like a Ghostbusters 3 in essence.

I remember being disappointed by the slapstick, since my friends and I had known about the original premise of the movie originally going to be a more serious toned horror about a group of scientists trying to stop Earth's terraformation by a bunch of The Thing inspired monsters.

I saw this movie on my first date with the first love of my life. It wasn't the only thing we did, we had spent the entire day together, and the movie was an unplanned thing at some point during it. She was the one who suggested Evolution, I hadn't heard of it prior and didn't really have any interest, but there weren't any better options so I went along with it to keep the date going. We both ended up really enjoying it and laughing a lot. That relationship was a roller-coaster, and like most young love didn't end up working out. The last time we spoke was about a year after we broke up. She had wanted to get back together, and I rejected her. I found out she died 6 years later. I haven't been able to bring myself to watch Evolution again since our date.
