Most visual narratives that, aren't a daytime TV show set for 6+ seasons 100 episodes, always get to some plot points faster than a more steady pace could provide.
Example: Rick's deputy in The Walking Dead was done in 5 issues while the TV show they knew they would have the time to flesh that drama out more.

It is that weird, timeskips exist, implied passage of time outside the shown events exists.
How do you have a timeskip or any oassage of time in a story that has the character literally dying from being in the wrong dimension and helping to stop an upcoming threat? Those are immediate dangers that would be the source of the whole movie's tension and make it impossible to do a timeskip.
Maybe don't try to shove a love story in a story with that many constraints then? People were praising ITSV for being refreshing for not having the male and female lead end up together just because but nope they were crazy for each other the whole time and then spent a year reconfiguring their lives to meet each other again, it's probably the worst and most contrived romance in a capeshit movie ever.
