the war council scene might be my favourite film scene of all time

I didn't think Timmy had it in him to be that menacing

When it starts great, first the defiance over the Fremen customs, then the "I'm pointing the way" in a raspy tone to Stilgar. Really set the scene nicely. I didn't like the black dude persuasion moment because the dialogue felt weird, but apart from this, incredible scene all around.

The final scene is almost as good. Him using The Voice on the Reverend Mother was kino, it was great seeing that old b***h get a taste of her own medicine. And then forcing the Emperor to kneel and kiss his ring while saying he's going to frick his daughter and there's nothing he can do about it.

Absolutely stellar performance, every line feels like a straight up smack in the throat to both the faithful and the skeptic.

The audience was supposed to side with Chani, but she's so fricking whiny in the movie that you can't help but side with Paul's revenge. Denis really needed Roth to write the screenplay for this movie. Frog can't write for shit.

Making the surrogates for his modern views two (ironically) holier-than-though b***hes was a poor choice, seeing how general audiences have already gotten sick of those types of characters

i cant honestly believe the writers wrote Chani that way to be sided with unless Zendaya just butchered the material, you're either immediately Stilgar where you shout Lisan Al-Gaib or you're like Paul where you try to doubt the prophecy but once he rides the big worm its over you're Muad'dib

That's literally the point Frank Herbert was making. He straight up said he wrote the books partly in reaction to how Americans worshipped the charismatic Kennedy, and glossed over or enthusiastically embraced even his worst or most morally bankrupt decisions.
Paul is exactly the sort of person people love to follow. That doesn't mean what he enables is good.

He keeps those up for merely one book, then Herbert writes that the "golden path" is the only option to same humanity and Paul creates his own OP dynasty

Paul fails the path in the books tho. Thats the point. Leto II walks the path and a shit path it is.

Book Chani is a paper-thin character that exists to be Paul's waifu.

Movie Chani has more agency and is a lot more interesting imo

because the book contains most of the criticism of Paul as the white savior exploiting the Fremen within his own internal monologue, something that won't translate to film, so they had Chani be the character who calls out the exploitation for what it is

Yeah but in terms of being a plot point why is nothing ever done with it

He's the product of a long line of backroom eugenics guided by the witches order. The point was to preserve his bloodline and genesnsince he was heading into conflict with Paul and could die.

I've gotta say, Frank Herbert seems to really know a thing or two about women. The Bene Gesserit are exactly what a secret society with centuries-long plotting would look like if it was made up entirely of women. That's exactly how they would operate.

    >The actions that Paul and later Leto II make are horrifying, but repeatedly and explicitly stated as literally the least bad option for the universe, and in the case of Leto II the ONLY way to prevent human extinction
    >paul is too scared to do it himself and this leads to disaster for all involved until Leto takes over
The theme of the Dune series is quite literally the same as starship troopers: Men occasionally have to do bad things to prevent TERRIBLE things from happening. I swear Herbert saw the tar brush of fascism that Heinlein was getting hit by and cucked out last minute.

I tried watching the Lynch version and fell asleep. Then I tried the new one and fell asleep. I have tried to read the book but it's always "oh my god bleep bloop from planet gurple brinkle is the next fursh'nblordng!" and I can't keep up, I fall asleep. I also don't really get the whole mind reading future space travel blue eye drug thing, it's such weird mixture of mysticism and technology I just can't relate. On top of that the real world references are too in our face, I can't stand the whole wailing desert music, feels as cliche as any old movie depiction of anything set in the middle east.

It's basically like this. Spice turns Paul's brain into super computer, Bene Gesserit powers let them see the past. Seeing the future is combining the two. Using the past to predict the future with super computer brain.

At least that's how I think of it.
