It isn't; I read the first book. Wang Miao is a dry nerd and not an action hero or really anything you'd want in a TV adaptation. I understand why they made the change of splitting him into 5 different western characters with personalities, but still as a scientist it rubs me the wrong way.
This was an inevitable change for western audiences. The original hero, Wang Miao, is an apologetic nerd and man of science, which may feel dry and expository for some, but I loved it. It's one of the few stories where the assburgers get to do something useful and heroic, and yeah, obviously they wouldn't allow that in Black personflix.
I love Asians who can play the dry civilized scientist role well but can also depict well their mental breakdowns. The neurotic scientist archetype fits them really well
They don't want nerds getting full of themselves and demanding to be paid what they're worth, or even worse, demanding a share of the women.
I went to college as a chem major and most of the others I knew, including some who have ended up in academia, were into weed. Which was as far as Saul went in the series.
Some of them had success with women. Some didn't. The point is that "scientists" is a very broad generalization to make.
