"I feel silly cause I'm not crying because I have cancer, I'm crying cause I don't look like me without my hair"
it's LITERALLY what she told me.

She had breast cancer, the doctors and support groups all talked about how common it is for women to have a mental break because they feel like they lose their identity, the ability to recognize themselves because the hair is gone.

She cried about the cancer plenty.

But when her head was being shaved, it was crying cause it was her hair.

there's charity groups JUST for buying women wigs when they get cancer
Hell, we had the option of sticking her head in a sub zero cooling cap while she had treatment for the chance she might keep 30% of her hair (we opted not, it's thousands of dollars, and my wife can't even deal with 30 degree weather)
There's therapy groups JUST about the hair.

It's a big deal, especially for young women. It's a bit different if you're in your 60s or later

                >It's a big deal, especially for young women.
I mean it is. Next to zero women walk around clean shaven. The few times I've seen a woman with no hair I immediately knew they had cancer (later found out they really did). It's not nice when people look at you and know that you're suffering from a grave illness. It also just looks ugly.
I don't know what it is with hair, but it's important to humans. For the Samurai, cutting off their ponytail was one step above killing themselves, it was a sign of great dishonor.

hair is probably the most immediate signal to everyone else about how well you take care of yourself.
Good hair is IMMEDIATELY noticeable. It shines, it's visually interesting, the complexity of style indicates you take time to ensure you present yourself appropriately.

The difference between an unkempt beard and a clean one is huge too

Well, it was a little vague.
It's that you had a 30% chance of retaining SOME of your hair
they said no one retains all of it with the treatment, and some people lose all of it, but the bulk still keep SOME hair.

The main advantage is that about 2 months after treatment and your hair starts growing back, you look more like you have a long mullet than a buzz cut

women and men need each other to get by day to day life.

One time in high school I was at a party and this chick got blacked out drunk and passed out on a couch and puked all over herself and her phone and clothes so we took her phone and put it in the top part of the toilet and then shaved her head with clippers we also found in the bathroom and when she woke up hours later she freaked out over the hair and couldn't call anyone to get a ride home because she couldn't find her phone.

Shaving has been used as a punishment for women since forever. Pic related is a French woman being punished for sleeping with a German soldier. Which is interesting because Christians, Hindus, Buddhists and even Muslims have religious practices that involve shaving ones head. It's a sign of purification.
