It's not actually that bad, Season 2 is where all the bulk of the lore comes from.

I've never watched Fire walk with me. How much did I miss? If I were to rewatch the show, where do I fit in the FWWM?
It's pretty much entirely a prequel, but it has some scenes and references to events in season 2 and 3.
The Return in many ways felt more like a sequel to FWWM than it did to the TV show. So I'd say you missed quite a lot.

It's like 4 episodes out of the season that are bad and even they have worthwhile parts you stupid shit. Just skip the scenes with James and Nadine
4 episodes? More like 20. More than half of the fricking season is just a soap opera. The only worthwhile episodes in the 2nd season are first 6 and the final one.

i'm rewatching and reading the livethreads after each episode for return, which is really a fun experience seeing all the theories and reactions, urging me to reply as well and join the fun only to wake up from that dream and realize its only the archive. in a way, our written words act like a time travel device
Just skip the non-Lynch-directed episodes.
I actually enjoy the bad half of season 2 on rewatch, it was really only frustrating the first time. When you rewatch it you already know its going to meander so you can just enjoy it for what it is, it's still got good moments in there, it's still comfy.
Everything with the Dead Dog farm and Denise, the entire cocaine subplot is really enjoyable, unironically. They also build a lot of the lore out in these episodes, the first time "Black Lodge" is ever uttered is in the 2nd half of season 2.
The only stuff that is like actively painful to sit through is the James stuff and Nadine's shit.
So give it a shot, you may find it comfy like I did.
