I'm not gonna ask what went right cause I haven't seen it but I am curious as to the appeal of it.

It's a tongue in cheek continuation of old star trek. New trekkies hate it because it's not like new trek, old trekkies hate it because it's making fun of them. Non-trekkies love it because it's fun.

It's something I expected to hate but somehow ended up liking. It makes some good references to the actually good Star Trek series and the show itself delivers better Trek material than Discovery and Picard.

It eventually managed to be more endering than other modern Trek shows and occasionally be funny.

despite the occasionally Rick and Morty feeling humor, it captures the optimistic and "workplace that feels like a family" vibe of classic Star Trek remarkably well
it's one of only two modern Trek shows, alongside Strange New Worlds, that have been able to win over actual Trek fans

Once you just give in to the sense of fun and absurdity that crews run into weekly, it's just an enjoyable watch.

Lower Decks has the sincerity of a fan film. Whether through taste, care, or a lack of ambition, it never challenges or subverts the source material in the off-putting way so many other modern reboots have. But once you take away the references and meta trekkie humor, this is not a Star Trek that stands on its own as science fiction. There are no big ideas here, only nods and winks to what came before.
Visually, this show is perhaps the prettiest rendition of the Rick and Morty branch of prime time cartoons. But aurally, it has a terribly rushed cadence such that the dialogue comes across as artificial and flat rather than genuinely snappy. It's a problem that it copied from the latter seasons of R&M. It's not funny, and it kills performances.
The only reason I begrudgingly and masochistically continue to watch this show is because of the cat doctor. It's not really worth it, because she has fewer lines than season 1 Worf.

I do want to add that despite my negative overall view, there are standout episodes. The 7th episode of season 3 was particularly strong for me, which succeeds in large part because it isn't juggling a B plot.

Anon, that's the birdfricker Peanut Hamper episode.

Yes. I liked it because it didn't shoehorn in an unnecessary b-plot without any thematic relationship to the main one. They didn't rush the story, and used the time to flesh out an alien culture a bit. There was a character arc, and outside of a funny subversion at the end, it felt like Trek.
See, I very much want to like this show, enough to overlook annoying characters and voices and bird fricking. It just goes to show how truly off-putting the pacing is for me in a regular episode.

Star Trek has turned into a farce. This show embraces it without shitting on it.
