i think it would work far better if we instead take on the role of an outsider looking into the fishbowl/ant farm and messing around with it as we see fit (to the relief or dismay of its prisoners)

Oh hey, that sounds pretty cool. I was thinking the same thing. Getting to see the way others would abstract is interesting. The social aspects I think would be really cool as well.
I like this one. Psychonauts style worlds seem fitting, while the different character's relationships could be optionally fleshed out like Persona styled social links that tie back into the main story.

Lots. The artstyle, the music, loving the characters, design wise and personality wise too. It's hilarious watching them interact with each other, this pilot did a great job establishing them all pretty well. A great show starts with a great cast. Not many gripes at the moment but if i had to pick it would be the whole glitchy angle. Feels kind of played out in current media but it at least fits in the theme of the digital universe. Interested in seeing where it goes.

No, in this instance I wouldn't be surprised if it did take inspiration from stuff like Gnosticism as that's pretty trendy these days. But you can't just assume every "pattern" you see is true especially as we ourselves are flawed human beings looking at the world through our own biases. Being challenged and told that the patterns you are seeing might not be real is vital for all of us to be able to get closer to the truth.

If not, then she'd see the circus as the same digital hell as everyone else. Being there probably would be a step up from her usual life, but she wouldn't know that.
She'd also likely feel extreme nausea whenever the daily challenges will involve some sort of slimy substances, not knowing herself why.

Maybe as part of one of Caine's bizarre adventures. Lots of movement options. Actually, thinking of it Penny's Big Breakaway looks exactly like how I'd have wanted it to look like.

A 3D collectathon platformer mixed with a visual novel. You run around completing the different adventures Caine gives you during the day, whereas at night you spend time chillin' with the other characters. This all ties into a sanity mechanic where your completion of the adventures, hanging out with different characters at different times, and even how you treat each character can affect their sanity levels. If their sanity gets too low, they abstract and become boss monsters during the adventures, making the game harder as a result
Your ultimate goal is to find a way out of the circus for you and whoever is still sane by the end of it all. The closer you get to freedom, the more things come about that can risk you losing your friends

We know that they forget their names, and probably their whole past identities, but do they still have any memories of their past lives?
If not, then she'd see the circus as the same digital hell as everyone else. Being there probably would be a step up from her usual life, but she wouldn't know that.
She'd also likely feel extreme nausea whenever the daily challenges will involve some sort of slimy substances, not knowing herself why.
