I put this one off for a while out of double reverse-polarization to Cinemaphile contrarianism and I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it. Moral of the story is that whatever non-slop Cinemaphile is viciously arguing about should be given a shot for at least 20 minutes before you write it off completely.

morons, it annoys me people will see Cinemaphile likes a movie with a negative RT score and assume it's some moron contrarianism like Snydershit shills. If the core of Cinemaphile is unironically praising some A24 art-house flick that they buried to the point no normalgay has ever heard of it it's probably megakino

When the movie came out there was a discourse on here about whether the movie was "insincere" or not. The people who liked it were in the right, but superficially the criticisms if they were true made the movie sound vapid. You can't watch everything, but on the whole it's a good idea to give any movie that gets organic discussion on Cinemaphile a shot.

    >guy who buys hookers basically makes himself homeless investigating the disappearance of a chick who almost kind of wanted to frick him once
    >uncovers a secret sex trafficking ring catering to the billionaire 1% who see themselves as literal pharohes
    >gives up on uncovering the conspiracy as soon as he realizes the woman who is literally trapped underground with the man who bought her doesn't really like him that much
    >concludes with our hero "leaving it all behind" by shacking up with the old prostitute that lives across the hall, to a swelling crescendo of triumphant music

What precisely did they actually mean by this?

I’m not with other anons that thought it was super 2deep5me and had some existential meaning, i think it’s as simple as the director seething at how Hollywood really works. Still was a fun watch tonight though. Gf said balloon girl was hot.

I think the movie works as a commentary on the state of American society as whole, but it definitely seems like a true allegorical representation of the haves and have nots in L.A. in particular.

The point the movie is trying to make is that yes, every conspiracy theory you can imagine is probably real even the most batshit ones but them being real won't magically explain reality to you and make everything click or make sense. The world will still feel empty and chaotic. 99% of these "conspiracies" are just old and rich people playing games because they're just as bored as you. Everything, even the craziest conspiracy, is really fricking mundane when you find the truth about it. You will still feel empty and your life will still be a wreck after solving them. Everything is just as meaningless, if not more so.

Basically don't get yourself lost in conspiracy theories even if they're real because solving them won't improve your life.

It's a metamodern black comedy about being a complete loser. It's the best thing since Eyes Wide Shut, but actually super funny and it also captures the highlights of Los Angeles extremely well. I initially had a knee-jerk reaction to it because I related so much to the main character that it deeply angered me and then it just felt like the same message as Eyes Wide Shut; it's probably best to look the other way, many things aren't as important as they seem. The main character goes on an absurdly autistic adventure of uncovering the elite's secrets and then realizes his real problem is that he's fricking homeless and simply fricking the old neighbor will solve his actual problems. It's in my top 10 without a doubt, a truly unique movie.

Similar movies/show that made me feel the same way as this movie.

    Burning
    The Devil All the Time
    The Death of Dick Long
    Inherent Vice
    Eileen
    Galveston
    True Detective Season 3

For games only ones I could think off is GTA San Andreas, GTA IV.

And Cyberpunk 2077 sending SoMi to the moon and then doing Don't Fear The Reaper.

The score doesn't get brought up much, I like how hard it leans into the 50s film noir soundscape. It lends the whole movie a slightly unreal, almost waking dream quality.
