in the open matte version you can see her naked ass, in the regular 1.85:1 version you can't because the top and the bottom of the frame are cropped. Humans have two eyes next to each other horizontally. Our vision is widescreen. I agree it’s fake and gay to cuck out by just cutting off the top and bottom of your own movie, but with the advent of digital cameras that record directly in whatever format you want, widescreen is the superior choice. Still, it’s a fun gimmick to look up films that were cropped and see what they look like uncropped.

      Anonymous

      >I agree it’s fake and gay
what makes it particularly fake though? any frame size would be equally fake and arbitrary. whether the limitation comes from the filming equipment or from later production should hardly matter to the viewer. the first reply nailed it as it's all about arbitrary artistic vision. chances are that any crude change to content by a nobody will hurt the experience. though this admittedly probably isn't the case with fidelity upgrades relating to image and sound quality.

        Anonymous

I actually wasn’t talking about films where the director intended it to be seen in a wider format, but when older films would get cropped to fit widescreen tvs. If you intend your film to be viewed in widescreen but you’re shooting on 35mm, I don’t think that makes the open format the “real” version of the film

Anti-open matte sentiment started as a Freemason conspiracy to hide more Munchkin suicides in The Wizard of Oz. The tradition continues to this day because they put "hidden in plain sight" child abuse in the letterboxing of films. They believe they absolve themselves of karmic debt through a loophole by admitting to their crimes in a roundabout way.

Blade Runner 2049 open matte is absolutely better than scope. Just brings the visuals and the aesthetics to life more without breaking composition.

Dune will also work better as open matte (or IMAX Enchanced etc.)

Because both these movies were shown in IMAX theaters, so they were shot with higher aspect ratio in mind. The Blu-ray edition especially for dune is shit, and lacks the scale of the full picture.
