Except a lot of anime has White protagonists. Almost everyone in Attack on Titan is White (Mikasa is an "oriental" and one of the last ones the people behind the walls are aware of), the MC of Cowboy Bebop is White, there are plenty of White characters in the Gundam shows. I don't know too much about anime yet, but I'm sure that there are tons of examples. It's stupid to pretend that this isn't the case. Keep gaslighting, maybe someone will believe you someday.

When someone in japan says a character is british they mean they're white. They still draw american characters with blond hair and blue eyes because that's the expectation.

          Anonymous

Lol yh. Within anime many characters are clearly Japanese, many are clearly of another race entirely but a lot are ambiguous. To me at least any character with lightly coloured hair or eyes is in no way supposed to represent a japenese person. That's not even up for debate and any denial of that is cope.

Btw Bishōnen is a term used to describe pretty boys and a lot of anime characters supposed to fit this archetype are based off a Swedish actor called Bjorn Andresen. Any character who's appearance is based off a white guy is clearly not supposed to represent a Japanese person. Even if his name is Japenese and he's a samurai, the guy has blonde hair and blue eyes.

Bjorn pretty quickly aged out of being bishonen and lost popularity. I think he was only really popular in Japan when he was around 14. I remember seeing pictures of him in his early 20s and he looked nothing like he did when he was 14. So saying every bishonen character is white because of Bjorn is honestly ridiculous.

              Anonymous

Not my point, I said a lot of them are and the writers have sometimes explicitly stated that their characters were inspired by Bjorn.

                Anonymous

The only character I know of that was inspired by Bjorn is Griffith and just from the fact that Midland is supposed to be Germany in not-Europe, it's reasonable to conclude that he's ethnically German. Anime is generally an ethnically agnostic artstyle, it makes much more sense to use context clues about a character's name, ancestry, nationality, etc to make an informed assumption about their ethnicity than just looking at their eye color/ hair color. Of course Manga authors and animators know that Japanese people mostly have brown eyes and black hair, but it would be boring and hard to differentiate characters if they all have the same eye and hair color. It's also pretty common for anime characters to have natural hair and eye colors no human on Earth has like green hair or yellow eyes.

    >b. be successful and not be punished

Why do asian americans care so much? If it bothers you that much why don't you just watch the japanese live action adaptations

Because Asian Americans, hilariously enough, cannot relate to real Asians. Asian Americans derive their identity entirely from the fact that they have slanty eyes and their parents talk funny, which is why they often group together regardless of their parents' nationality and will claim ownership of any Asian culture - even one that they don't belong to. They don't want to put in any effort to connect to their parents' homeland, either culturally or linguistically, but they want to own it, so they perpetually seethe at "outsiders," particularly white people, who do put in the effort to assimilate into that culture or even just have an interest in it. Ultimately, any accusations of white washing can be assuaged by casting a Chinese American as a Japanese character so that a Korean American girl on Twitter can retweet about how inclusive it is. These people don't have actual principles and they don't care about accuracy.

You can still cast Asians for anime roles as long as the casting director is an Asian who's worked in the Asian industry. They would cast the most attractive Asians they could find like they do for their own films. If you get an American to cast an Asian you just get a barely above average looking Asian and it looks shit. In most animes, just like most media, the characters are supposed to be attractive so the audience subconsciously empathises them. The only reason normies like Henry Cavill as superman is because he looks like what you think superman would look like. A top 0.001% Chad. Why can't they do this for other races? Because they genuinely haven't met enough Asians to understand their beauty standards.

Look at pic related. These guys are barely 5/10 and they're supposed to action heroes?

I think what they mean is they look like ugly Asians not attractive Asians. Idc about why but the most attractive Asians are lighter skinned, have more gracile facial features and tend to look more eurocentric. Even if they're 100% Asian. Same for Turkish, Mexican, Filipino actors and models, they tend to have more eurocentric features compared to the norm. Check out kpop, telenovas, Turkish drama shows etc. They tend to look a certain way.
