      Two things:

      1) The package insults the consumer's intelligence by offering up a direct quote of the film's famous line, together with some prominent prop/macguffin. Such designs presuppose famialiarity with the film, they're made for 80 IQ people who have already watched the movie and know the famous things in it. The pleasure of watching a movie for the first time consists to a large degree in picking out the neat things that you like for yourself. These might be plot points, a certain shot, a well-delivered line, or simply the way that the actors move in a shot. To a certain point, "spoilers" are a valid concern when consooming a new movie.

      2) Updated covers are almost always worse by default, for the simple reason that they're not the original visual emblem of the film. At their worst, they're excuses for the designer to insert themselves into the production, often creating a "contemporary" look which is anachronistic and out of place with the vintage of the film itself.

I disagree with point 1. These variants are cheap supermarket variants of highly popular normie cinema. I think its completely appropriate for target market. Would suck if you were a cinephile and that version would be the only one available in your market (europe/region2) lmao. But I strongly agree with you on point 2. I buy a lot of boutique blurays. I fricking hate Vinegar Syndrome’s art style. Arrow Video can be hit or miss, but they always include the original art on a reversible cover.

A handful are alright but most of the quote choices are awful, and even most of the alright choices had better options I would have picked
For the images the only thing that really stood out to me as an awful choice was the blade runner one being the fricking unicorn.

Sure, there's a lot of terrible box art out there, but have you ever bought something because it was so bad it was good? I bought pic related out of a clearance bin a couple weeks ago entirely due to the absurdity of someone thinking that a film like FMJ needed a "Patriotic Heroes!" banner.

I like to imagine that there were at least a few literal boomers out there who thought they were buying some "America, hell yeah!" war film and were completely blindsided.

      >Patriotic Heroes
Which is funny because I find seeing the horrors that US soldiers went through in Vietnam and the training before hand does make them seem like American heroes to me. Tragic heroes, to be sure, but I find heroism in facing a completely fricked up war like that. I had a granduncle who served in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. After what he saw in Nam, he retired.
Though, yeah, that tone deaf marketing is not going for that.

I can't decide which the worst one is. I thought 101 Dalmatians would win (but I'm biased because I'm in love with Perdita) but then North by Northwest after that. I've actually never seen NNW, but I'm assuming it doesn't actually have anything to do with directions? I just know that plane scene is from it.

They aren't actually watching them, so they get DVDs because they come in better-looking cases without any of the blu-ray coloring or branding tacked on.

          Anonymous

Blu-Ray transfers get butchered by noise removal and other post processing shit occasionally (Predator and T2), also I think there's ones like Menace II Society and Team America that just arbitrarily censor/cut graphic footage from the (otherwise superior) Blu-Ray releases that are included on DVD versions.

          Anonymous

I assumed he meant blu rays because otherwise he may as well have said "explain to me why you are buying VHS in the year 2022". Also the OP's picture is clearly labelled as a blu ray.

I buy them used from pawn shops and shit because I like having no compression (blu-ray rips are usually fine but the average reencoded DVD rip is dogshit compared to the uncompressed file off the disc with makeMKV) and extras/commentary tracks.

You could probably join a private tracker or whatever that has remuxes and all that readily available but I don't have the patience or uploading bandwidth to get into one of those.
