In ancient Rome actors were so low status they were subject to infamia, which meant that they couldn't defend themselves in court and could even be beaten or killed without legal repercussions.

It was considered to be a worthless profession (actors were seen as professional liars) akin to prostitution.

The Romans were right about actors and actresses were considered prostitutes everywhere.

romans had really strict social mores about subservience and dominance. dominance is manly and good, subservience is womanly and bad. actors were basically seen as dancing monkeys for their audience, and as such it was seen as one of the most subservient and degrading acts that a man could perform. even slaves in certain respects weren't looked as down upon. nero's obsession with wanting to play music, star in plays, and be a gladiator was seen as abhorrent to the upper classes because of this cultural outlook, and is why the patrician class despised him so much.

Romans considered lying to be one of the most heinous acts an upstanding citizen could perform. Perjury was seen as worse than murder or assault in many cases. One of the most serious insults was for a Roman citizen to call another citizen a liar or to imply they were dishonest.

In Roman estimation Actors were literally professional liars. They saw actors how we would view professional assassins or something.

      Also what

romans had really strict social mores about subservience and dominance. dominance is manly and good, subservience is womanly and bad. actors were basically seen as dancing monkeys for their audience, and as such it was seen as one of the most subservient and degrading acts that a man could perform. even slaves in certain respects weren't looked as down upon. nero's obsession with wanting to play music, star in plays, and be a gladiator was seen as abhorrent to the upper classes because of this cultural outlook, and is why the patrician class despised him so much.

said, it was a subservient (and thus b***h tier) "profession." Many actors and actresses actually doubled as prostitutes because at that point why not? You are treated like a prostitute, may as well get paid like one.

Also by extension most Roman theater was very juvenile and dumb. It was generally only for plebs (or patricians slumming it) and would be what we would think of as mindless popcorn flicks today, just with a dash of porn (there were lots of dick, ass, and breasts, in Roman theater).

The Romans were right about actors and actresses were considered prostitutes everywhere.

Greeks considered them to be something akin to teachers and valued them. Athens did anyways. Greek theater was often instructive and considered high art. They would have been the kino appreciators of the ancient world. Its one of the reasons why Romans considered the Greeks as "two faced."

You gotta remember this was before porn, so a lot of "actors" were basically just strippers
