In Louis Theroux’s iconic “Twilight of the Pornstars”, the adult industry is convinced the industry will disappear within five years (hence the title). Now, over a decade later, the industry is actually bigger than ever, and stars are making THOUSANDS of times more than they did in 2011. What changed?

Really? I would’ve figured all the good looking girls would move on to OnlyFans and the ugly scraps leftover wouldn’t make much.

I think he includes OF. Keep in mind that Onlyfans type content and similar platforms have existed since the 90s, but were fairly unprofitable until recently.

        >convinced the industry will disappear within five years (hence the title)
The title doesn't even suggest that. Only that it is past it's prime and in it's twilight years.
        >the industry is actually bigger than ever.
The industry as a whole? Debatable. The industry that Louis covered which is professional film studios? They've declined a lot since the 90s.
        >stars are making THOUSANDS of times more than they did in 2011. What changed?
Not from studio produced content unless they are a staple of the industry and are in high demand.

The obvious change is the business model which has become more about personal contact with the pornstar.

Custom video and subscription sites have always existed but they never tried to bridge the gap between social media site and porn delivery and that was totally accidental by OF. OFs strength is that it creates the illusion of being in an online relationship with the person like a long distance relationship which takes advantage of lonely men who just want to feel like they have an online girlfriend.

That's what Brazzers feels like, at least. I don't remember their roster being so fat and so mid back in 2014

The traditional industry DID die. The whole business model has changed and it's hard to overstate how much of a stranglehold MindGeek has over everything.

Correct. Much like Hollywood, porn is unprofitable but it's propped up by ~~*financiers*~~ for the purposes of subversion and propaganda.

the statistics are released by the hooahs themselves, it's like 1% of active OF creators that even make more than 1k a month

1% is still going to be something like a million people. Many just splash out on one video, make a few thousand and then leave when the subs dry up. Many don't even think about making a "career" out of it they just see it as disposable income and spend it immediately on trash like designer clothes.

There aren't 100 million people making porn on Onlyfans. Onlyfans has 3.1 million content creators as of January this year. The top 1% is 30,000 people. The other 3.07 million people make less than $1000 a month from it.

Thank you Mr. Researcher. Pretty interesting the number of "creators" is that low as you'd think every cam prostitute in the world would jump ship to it. Still, 30,000 is a pretty decent number. I wonder if there were even that many pornstars making that much money back in the glory days.

There might not have been as high a volume overall but there would have been much more earning better money. Earning over $1000 a month is enough to put you in the 1% on onlyfans whereas the women in porn used to get paid over $1000 a scene.

If the women entering porn weren't barely adults with no regards for the future and didn't have drug problems they could have set themselves up for life off the back of working just a few years in the industry at that time.

Horseshit. The top 1% on onlyfans are making more than ever before, and from far less work, but for everyone else it's gotten worse and for the consumer (or pirate) things have never been worse.
It's honestly an appropriate time for Louis to do a follow up. Weird weekends: Porn was 1998, Twilight of the Pornstars was 2012. If he does a third one in 2026 you'll have a three part anthology that looks at a transforming business in 14 year intervals.

the average rates in professional porn have plummeted in the last 5-10 years.
most girls just use mainstream porn in order to become a recognizeable name and promote their other activities (Onlyfans, Instagram, escorting...).

      >promote their other activities (Onlyfans, Instagram, escorting...).

It's always the most telling when recognizable names just give up all together and do twitch streams. The money isn't there anymore and it's way more profitable to just exist on twitch subs.

        Anonymous

I've never used or had a twitch but how do they make money from subs on there? Do you need to pay a fee to subscribe to someone's twitch channel or something?

It's basically a membership fee, you get perks like icons next to your name and can post custom emotes, really sycophantic stuff.

you can watch the stream with ads or pay $5 a month for no ads. i'd bet most streamers make the majority of their money from donations though, twitch doesn't take a cut of that and they'll have shit like text-to-speech with a minimum donation amount

This, I remember the days when brazzers was churning out 2 scenes a day, now they barely shit out 1 every 2 or 3 days

They still do pump out two scenes per day every week day then one scene per day over the weekend. The difference is the quality is worse, the women are uglier and at least 4 - 5 of those scenes per month are a best of compilation made from old videos.
