    It's based on Simulacron-3, a novel.
World On a Wire precedes both of these movies by 25 years.

Not suggesting it ripped off the Matrix, saying what a bummer it must be, how unlucky the timing was, can't help but contrast them and the Matrix is so much better in every aspect. Like releasing some schlocky space adventure right when Star Wars came out.

Star Wars was a schlocky space adventure.

That's my point. You make the exact same movie right when someone else does it so much better than you. Btfo any illusions you had talent.

it's going to really boggle your noggin, op, when you realize these were both preceded by picrel, and the matrix even reused sets from it

Nirvana came out a year earlier than that one. It's odd and low budget, but liked it more than any of the other movies posted here. That's just my contrarian taste though. There's also World on a Wire which is much older than any of these.

I always thought Craig Bierko would be huge, but I guess Patrick Wilson was younger and took his roles.

There's something about his face and delivery I just can't take seriously. Every line felt like it was about to be undercut by a joke.

I know he was in scary movie 4 but I want to say that was just really good casting of a straight guy in comedy.

Probably because he sounds like Heath Ledger's joker voice.

      more on theme:
      Pleasantville

For Matrix's aesthetic influence - The Crow

      Also:
      >The pair spent the better part of a decade writing and refining their idea before getting the go-ahead to create a 600-page shot-for-shot comic-book of the film.
The inspirations are all over the place, the brothers were nerds and consumed everything, they took from books, from comic books, from anime - a lot was from anime actually: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZUEaGC6xvI

So OP. Yes it could be that some Gnostic themed script was laying around or sent to multiple directors to psyop people into the 2000s or some controlled revolutionary movement but then it could also be that the 90s were such a powerful psyop that it coalesced in the same gnostic ideas in the heads of all those producers.

I personally think the first option is more likely but the second is an easier explanation that won't make people dismiss the topic.
