That's it. That was his only contribution to the movie.

    Yes, and?
To begin with, that's far more importance than he deserves to.

Yeah, he has so much depth and character in the games, truly a shame they didnt translate that to the movie.

They didn't have the mindset of making a "good" movie, they wanted to make a "successful" movie. To which they succeeded. I can kind of see why the went this route, think about the last two times they let the west make Mario content. There's the Super Show that now plagues every dollar DVD bin and cheep streaming service, and one of the worst movies in human history.

They didn't dive too deep into the characters or world building because this movie was purposefully vanilla. They wanted to make sure they casted the biggest net possible and, most importantly, make a lot of money.

Say what you will about Illumination but they were the perfect studio for a movie like this. Tame movies making bank off families is their forte.

Another piece of the puzzle most seem to overlook is Miyamoto's heavy involvement with the movie. You know, Miyamoto. The guy who's gone on record saying he dislikes more complex stories in Mario games? Even in his RPGs?

I don't know if Miyamoto has actually changed, has lessened his involvement, or what but it seems like the last few years of Mario have been a much different direction than the Wii U era.

A Mario movie even existing to begin with, TTYD remake, Seven Stars remake, allowing for weird power-ups + gimmicks in Wonder. It definitely feels like a different era.

That's not relevant. He said that because they were video games, not fricking books. But either way no one wants a "complex" story in Mario. It's just supposed to be fun, which I don't think illumination did a very good job of. I wish, I hope they will do better next time.

i thought he was actually funny, usually i can't really stand Toad but thats more on the voice they tend to give him. Keegan was surprisingly pleasant to listen to in the role.

Really strange that she decides to just pull out a gun at the wedding and hope she doesn't miss; knowing that Bowser will slaughter everyone if he survives. You would think it would be easier to just accept the marriage to keep the toads safe.

Bowser was never going to kill EVERYONE. Also Peach was never going to miss.

Yeah, that's Toad. Did you play the games? Were you expecting them to roll out Captain Toad in the first movie?

Aren't you glad they wasted several million dollars of the budget on hiring a celebrity voice actor for him?

One of my biggest gripes in the movie are two scenes that contradict each other. I've been told that's the joke but I can't see it.

    >The Toads question who Mario is next to peach. Peach says he doesn't matter, and they cheer

This scene by itself is funny because to the Toads Mario is some random dude. But later when Mario and Kong get ate and they say Mario died all the Toads cry.

So going back to my knit picking of the movie if Mario to the Toad is some random guy, why does he matter?

He was Peach's friend and/or Toads are friendly and gentle people who will cry over strangers.

Because he became a fricking hero by kicking DK's ass meaning he was no longer unimportant to the current events. It's because of him that they have the support of the kong army, so everyone now knows his name. Also he is peach's best friend and it's like this anon said

He was also supposed to be the "cute" one that minions moms like. And he made a big ass truck in the mario kart section.
What else you need from this lil homie? He's just Toad.
