Comics have muscle lines drawn all over the suit so it looks more detailed, but real world suits don't show muscles as well so they have to compensate with other details somehow. Unfortunately they usually frick it up and the end result is the abomination OP posted

I’m also someone from the production. I’ve been in the industry for 15 years and this is by far the most mis-managed project I have ever seen. I can truly appalled. Not only to I think this will be shelved, but there is bound to be several lawsuits. The treatment and mismanagement is embarrassingly unprofessional. This is my first time working directly with James Gunn and he has lost all my respect.
Sources close to Gunn and familiar with his thinking confirm, he has reportedly gone on vacation suddenly to 'clear his mind', leaving the whole production in the lurch

Capeslop these days requires big budgets (250-300 million is the minimum, and a Superman movie requires a lot more because CGI + different locations + expensive editing + marketing) and WB doesn't want to spend money on something that will fail like BvS or JL, so they don't want to spend too much on it and make every dollar count, which is not how Gunn used to work during his time at Marvel or even while directing Suicide Squad. Hence the conflicts.

I am also in the industry and can vouch for what he says. The tone of the movie is all over the place and the bosses are not happy. Every day of shooting has been completely reshot at least 4 times, with some days being repeated 6 or 7 times with completely different scripts and storyboards. I have never seen anything like this and can only imagine how much pressure Gunn must feel.

Gunn only has the control to make the dailies how he wants them. He still has to show the dailies to the committee that basically has bankrolled the whole film on their own so far. There is talk they might pull or reduce daily funding for 'Gunn's Superman' in response to what they see as Gunn making an uneven joke of a movie.
Gunn was recently reprimanded by the building security because he tried to take apart the window to his office. Some say he was trying to climb to the roof.
Ok, but when it was announced he was rebooting the DCU it seems as though they were giving him the full backing to take on projects. So what, now they’re just giving him a Fox/Fincher Alien3 situation?
Nobody gets that level of control unless they're self funded (ex: Megalopolis), at least not under today's studio system. Especially with a multidepartmental property like 'Superman', no one person or group of creatives can get free reign, but the idea of it can make for a good marketing gimmick.

Full creative control in a sense of "we'll let you write the script and pick the actors and then we'll frick you over every step of production because we don't want you to spend too much of OUR money on a movie and another 'shared universe' that will likely fail just like the DCEU before it."
So yeah, it'll end up being 2-3 movies directed and written by Gunn, + a few TV series, maybe he'll somehow make it to the second chapter of his universe with some Justice League or B+S+WW: Trinity movie, but then he'll just get fired, and unlike Snyder, he won't get the chance to release some "director's cut", not that anyone will care much at that point.

Because he’s OP and his story is pretty simple. Hollywood is obsessed with “dark superman” and they think that’s the only way to go because they’re completely out of touch. If they would just allow a writer and director to give a straight forward supes/lex, superstrong/supersmart storyline it would be refreshing. But everyone’s moronic.

The problem is they don't want a positive cool white Superman, and they know audiences will reject a black or other minority Superman, so they settled for a israeli Superman.
From what I've read (mostly rumors from the set and from some people involved with production), it seems that the bosses didn't like that his version of Superman was too "lighthearted", too "humorous", even a bit naive at times, as if they forgot what GotG and Suicide Squad movies were like. They hired him to remake this whole universe because they wanted someone to make it more positive and fun than the DCEU or "Snyderverse" and now they're unhappy with the halfway result and want it to be "more serious" but without being too grim.
i been saying since day one the main thing Gunn needs to do is keep his horrendous "humor" out of it. I somewhat enjoyed peacemaker but the jokes made me almost quit multiple times. I choose to believe this LARP because of the key words "too humorous". Knock it off with the awful jokes gunn.

The Man of Steel trailer was the only good thing to come out of Snyder's Superman. His movies sucked.
No Zack, your Star Wars knock-off totally sucked, and I highly doubt director's cuts will change things this time. Man of Steel was good, ZSJL was OK, but BvS was still a mess even after you added 30 minutes to its runtime.

At one point an exec asked Gunn to put Elmer Fudd in the mix. Someone brought in a comic and asked Gunn to literally use the Elmer Fudd character from 'Looney Tunes' in this movie. That's the level of respect Gunn gets, and that's how lost the production is.

Everything they've revealed about this movie feels schizophrenic. It was billed as back to basics Superman movie but then all these other characters who have nothing to do with Superman were cast. Gunn made a big deal about bringing the trunks back for the classic costume but it's literally the New 52 costume with the trunks slapped on as an afterthought. Seems like there's so much pressure on this movie to "get Superman right" but also set up a new cinematic universe and modernize the character that ultimately it'll please no one.

Everyone thinks Superman is too goofy and overpowered, I think he's not goofy or overpowered enough. All the cool stuff about Superman is the weird stuff that modern adaptations leave out. Superman should have an arctic base full of confiscated alien tech as well as a zoo full of extraterrestrial critters. He should a superpowered dog, he should have a miniature city in a bottle, Superman robots to fill in for him/throw suspicion off Clark Kent. He should have traveled to the future as a teen to fight with the Legion of Superheroes, he should have close friends who see both Clark and Superman everyday but still aren't sure they're the same person. That's the good shit. You take all that away and Superman is just a strong guy who flies and there's a million of them.

Yes, Lois and Clark being in an actual relationship is the exception rather than the rule in most Superman comics, at least until the last few decades. I actually read a few of the issues around their wedding, which only happened in 1996 (non counting Clark and Lois on other versions of Earth).
