> Insiders privy to filming and early versions of Todd Phillips’ eagerly awaited sequel to “Joker” tell Variety the movie leans heavily towards being “mostly a jukebox musical,” as it integrates at least 15 reinterpretations of “very well-known” songs.

Because everything has to be really fricking lame. How they took their down to earth crime movie that mad e a billion dollars and decided that the sequel needed to be a jukebox musical co-starring lady fricking Gaga is beyond me.

      >and decided that the sequel needed
Todd Phillips decided to make it a musical.
He clearly didn't want to make a sequel and decided to ask for a stupid amount of money and put forth the most imbecilic idea and Phoenix was desperate enough for the paycheck that he went along with it.

Todd Phillips is laughing all the way to the bank.

        >Phoenix was desperate enough for the paycheck
Huh? Does he have a massive amount of debt we don't know about? He's a fairly successful actor. He probably took it because he likes the role.

Maybe he confused Phoenix with Leto?

Phoenix said yes to Napoleon when it was clear it wasn't going to be anywhere close to historically accurate. At least when he said yes to Beau is Afraid it was an arthouse movie that was trying something.

He made $4.5 for the first movie, and gets $20M for the sequel.

He didn't get $20M for Napoleon and probably wouldn't have gotten Napoleon if Apple wasn't willing to lose $200M on that movie:

          >But at what price? Sources say the Martin Scorsese-helmed “Killers” cost an eye-popping $215 million (that includes about $40 million in Covid-related costs). In fact, Apple spent at least $700 million to make and market just three films: “Killers,” Ridley Scott’s “Napoleon” and Matthew Vaughn’s “Argylle.” The trio have earned a combined $466 million worldwide at the box office, with “Napoleon” leading the pack at $221 million, followed by “Killers” ($157 million) and “Argylle” ($88 million).

He's not going to make $20M on the A24 movie Eddington or on Polaris, which no studio has been interested enough to buy at any price.

I'm glad Napoleon bombed, it was Ridley Scott at his absolute worst.

I like the idea of a sequel that is nothing like the original.

The original movie was a psychological deep dive into schizophrenia and depression, right?

And the sequel is a musical? Why not just make a new movie?

Because it's probably in Harley's point of view like the first movie was from Arthur's.

I feared from the beginning that it was going to be a jukebox musical, because normies like seeing songs they recognized. The longer it took for them announce a songwriter, the more likely it seemed that we were getting jukebox. I'm not surprised by this announcement, but I am very disappointed.

      >The original movie was a psychological deep dive into schizophrenia and depression, right?
      >And the sequel is a musical?
If you think a musical can't be those things, you haven't seen Next 2 Normal, or probably any Sondheim show. With that said, I don't think a JUKEBOX musical can be those things, and it's very disappointing that we're not getting a real musical.

On the plus side, when this movie inevitably bombs maybe Lady Gaga will quit trying to act and go back to making music that doesn't suck.

I'm 100% fine with Joker 2 being a weird musical, but I fricking HATE song cover 99.99999% of the time. Why couldn't they just make a whole-ass musical with totally original songs? Why this lame normie-pandering shit?
