Is he actually a good actor?

Is he actually a good actor? I feel any role where's not playing a grumpy old man (aka himself) he's kind of shit. Did he actually hate Carrey's buffoonery or was he just jelly?

Yeah. He's great when he tries.
Though he can be pretty great when he just phones it in, better than some actors giving it their all.

JFK yes, he wasn't an grumpy old man in that one. He was a closeted homosexual congressman who had conspiracies to hide. He pulled that role off well

His performance in Batman Forever feels like he's desperately trying to upstage Carrey and it comes off pretty tryhard and embarrassing.

Not at all. It seems like he's being directed by a gay like Joel "Bat Nips" Schumacher while having to put up with a notoriously narcissistic pseud who thinks he's an artist.

TLJ was referring to Carrey's attitude off-cameras.

That was just bad direction on Schumacher’s part, who’s only exposure to the brand was probably the 60s series.

It was sad to see his mind deteriorate. I saw an interview with him after a showing of Cruising I believe where he recounted the entire inspiration of the movie with names, locations, what certain acronyms mean. Then years later he was forgetting names, glazing through parts of the story, and misremembering certain details. He's so fascinating to listen to. He was a brilliant story teller.

He was lucid enough to tell the makers of the new Exorcist movie to frick themselves and I appreciated that.

          >William Friedkin once said to me, “Ed, the guy who made these new ‘Halloween’ is about to make one to my movie, “The Exorcist.” That’s right, my signature film is about to be extended by the man who made “Pineapple Express.” I don’t want to be around when that happens. But if there’s a spirit world, and I come back, I plan to possess David Gordon Green and make his life a living hell.”

He came to blows with Harlan Ellison in the middle of a busy restaurant because Harlan insisted that he, Friedkin, was a *good* writer.
They never spoke again and the adaptation of The Spirit they were working on never happened. It’s a funny story though.

Yes, he’s a good actor and calling Jim Carrey a buffoon to his face during his height of popularity was unfathomably based.
