>Are you really implying that Everything Everywhere all At Once and Jordan Peele's Nope are for fags?
Everything Everywhere all at once is the one with the prolonged butt plug sequence right?
>Top Gun is a normal movi
If it was a normal movie it wouldn't be a tired rehash of 40yo mediocre movie nobody asked for and nobody went out of his way to rewatch for decades
This is a boring, bullshit video. This guy has no fucking clue what he's talking about, and engages in too much buzz word speak. Just read an armond white article
it's not the "new thing" it's just why everything everywhere all at once and top gun both worked so well at the same time, whatever you want to call it but it's the return of optimism just in two different ways.
I said popular. Not box office bombs. The only Goose movie that’s been successful was Drive. Also Remember the Titans but that’s far from a nihilistic movie and he’s barely in it
Joker, I’ll give you that one.
Her was a bomb and it wasn’t nihilistic lmao. Did you sleep through the ending?
Watchmen was also a flop.
Jesse James was a flop.
Requiem for a Dream was a flop.
Thor L&T. Because I could tell the director didn’t care at all. The Last Jedi. Black Swan. I Care A Lot. Hateful Eight. Whiplash, Revenant, Nightcrawler.
Thor L&T being bad doesn’t make it nihilistic.
Last Jedi is literally movie that says young people can save a world that has been left to rot by previous generations. It’s incredibly optimistic. Again, it’s a bad movie but not nihilistic.
I’ll give you Black Swan.
I can’t judge I Care A Lot by box office since it was a straight to Netflix film, but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t what anyone can call popular except among critics.
Whiplash I can kinda give you. It didn’t set the box office on fire and normies don’t like it.
I could say the same about Nightcrawler.
Revenant is the only one of these movies you can unequivocally call a bonafide hit because of DiCaprio
The return of optimism. bro, you act like we just spent the last two decades watching movie with themes like Chinatown and not superhero power fantasies. Stop being a clown and using retarded blanket declarations
it's not the "new thing" it's just why everything everywhere all at once and top gun both worked so well at the same time, whatever you want to call it but it's the return of optimism just in two different ways.
Literally no one on this board is capable of refraining from saying the most ridiculous baseless shit in absolutes. All major Hollywood movies have been the same formulaic slop with happy endings that defend the status quo for decades. Top Gun and EEAO are not a “return to optimism” you moron
Any way, my point is that all of the most popular movies are typically very optimistic.

Damn, I actually started writing a script for a youtube video last month that talked about this too. Same title even. But yeah, the movies that have come out in the last few years definitely feel "different." They're a lot more self-aware and don't take themselves seriously while revisiting old archetypes and stories instead of trying to subvert traditional conventions. Movies in the mid/late 2010s felt dark and moody and wanted to be super serious. The term that really fits newer movies imo is "ironic sincerity." It's as if the wall between the creator and audience has gotten so short that neither side even bothers pretending that pop culture and media is art anymore. It's all content that can be produced by anyone, so there's no need for the artist/creator to act like their some artistic genius that has to present something super high quality that outdoes whatever the standard or convention is so as not to seem cliche. It doesn't matter how weird or insane the idea sounds, anything goes nowadays. Just look at the Velma show or the Barbie movie. I think the movie that fits in with the definition of Metamodern and "ironic sincerity" the most is something like the Lego Movie, where the main character is just a regular guy who isn't special but is still the hero who saves everyone even if he turns out to not be the chosen one or whatever. He still has to go on a grand quest like most hero's journey stories, but the movie treats everything so light-heartedly and isn't up its own ass constantly (because why bother when this kind of story has been a million times, might as well have fun with it), but is still serious when it needs to be. The movie doesn't just deconstruct and critique past conventions and cliches for the sake of deconstruction, but instead goes beyond and provides a response to what is being deconstructed while revisiting old conventions and cliches and creating something new with them, not in spite of them.
I don't really go out of my way to watch modern media either, but it's everywhere. It's a huge part of our culture and they help shape each other now more than ever. Even if you don't pay attention to whatever show or movie is popular, chances are you have experienced it in some way through social media or other people talking about it. Everything is media and it is impossible to escape it. If you pay attention to people and how they interact with others and present themselves, you get an overall feel or shared sentiment that is likely expressed in media/movies too.
>They're a lot more self-aware and don't take themselves seriously while revisiting old archetypes and stories instead of trying to subvert traditional conventions.
you mean like every disney movie from the past 15 years?
>It's all content that can be produced by anyone, so there's no need for the artist/creator to act like their some artistic genius that has to present something super high quality that outdoes whatever the standard or convention is so as not to seem cliche
aka directors and writers can be self aware "hihihi isnt this campy, havent we seen this meem on twitter folks" to get ahead and sidestep any criticism, but then also want to get praise for being revolutionary and convention breaking
Instead of being sincere, try to make art and be vulnerable because it might not be well received

Postmodernity sucks because it doesn’t offer progress of any kind it’s just this cancerous belief that ITS ALL GOOD.
Metamodernity is trash because all it does is it talks about how postmodernity sucks cocks. In some ways it’s even worse than postmodern because not only it offers nothing new it also shits on things that don’t offer nothing new. Like shut the fuck up, quit bitching and do something.
I feel like murdering people who say shit like >oh my GOD this is so META
Because literally murdering them is a lot more of progressive and fresh action than the shit they’re doing.

Any movie that is unconventional structurally is postmodern. Character studies like Taxi Driver are post modern and are progress for movies. The fact you think it is only associated with “meta” just shows how ignorant you are tbqh
>Postmodernity sucks because it doesn’t offer progress of any kind it’s just this cancerous belief that ITS ALL GOOD.
Wrong, postmodernity sucks because it isn't anything, it's just a state of being where nothing is happening or matters.
Read a book next time.
This isn't a new concept. This gay just came up with a meme name for it: meta-modernism. Historians and academics all knew the post modern era was over in about 2004-2006, when Internet 2.0 hit. Most call it the post-post modern era. And it's when everything turned to shit.
jesus H. Christ. how do people watch this shit? Even if I don't turn it off immediately due to the gay voice there is no way I'm gonna sit through 40 minutes of it when I could have read the same thing in five. It makes no sense to me. How do the internet addicted retards have the attention span of a goldfish yet simultaneously prefer to watch drawn out videos that are just recordings of someone reading something they prepared beforehand instead of just reading that in a quarter of the time?
So basically modern retards are trying their best to unlearn storytelling, character building, moviemaking and writing, halting all (pop) culture. I pity the next batch of creatives. They will need to relearn at least a century of basic notions from zero, with nobody teaching them.
Also lmao at using Top Gun 2: Gerietrics as an example
if post-modernism is recognizing and questioning the absurdity, meta is accepting it and attempting to find value in it.
An indirect refutation of the human spirit's primal opposition to nihilism.
Yeah, it's another increase of the distance between people and actual content. Content itself is the fulfilling element and any degree of separation is non detrimental only as long as it's temporary and its purpose is making the actual content more efffective.
Otherwise is just seeing through things (and reveling in the act of seeing through in itself) until you see nothing at all.
He's talking bullshit.
His "metamodernism" is just people trying to reinvent modernism after postmodernism completely destroyed storytelling. Basically reinventing the wheel long after knowledge has been lost.
Top Gun is an absolutely mediocre movie that shouldn't exist (Damn you Cruise for using your star power to do a sequel to a mediocre movie instead of breathing life in sorely missing new things) and that other spastic movies is shit salad.
Long story short: that guy is making up shit and missing the point.
Increasingly have nothing but contempt for magical realism, surrealism, meta, postmodern, metamodern or whatever these kinds of things are being called now. It's much harder to construct a functional story than it is to be trapped in your own head and making everything about you.
>why do modern movies feel so different now?
soul
past writers still had souls
every generation of goyim is designed to have less and less
millenials who are writing the current movies barely have a soul

What is it with this genre of video essay where the narrator always speaks in this exact specific intonation?
They know they’re being watched alongside folding laundry and washing dishes.
They’re mimicking the cadence and tone to Every Scene A Painting. Also possibly hoping the asmr crowd just puts it on in the background.
