no. not because he isn't a great character, but because writers use him for whatever political or mary sue purposes for other characters

when nightcrawler found out about uncanny x-force, he openly made it clear that whatever rumors he was hearing, he didn't like the sound of at all and was going to confront cyclops about such rumors.

thing is, he conveniently died before that could happen. so by the time nightcrawler does come back from the dead, bendis is writing x-men and for uncanny 600, bendis uses nightcrawler and the x-men to shit on beast, the most desegregationist x-man at this particular time. nightcrawler stopped caring about behind closed doors death squads because writers were forcing muh rightclops. beast using nightcrawler's death against cyclops was completely in line for both characters, and that reasoning was absolutely dropped by bendis and others

then later, when krakoa is falling apart, writers use nightcrawler to prop up cyclops again and depict nightcrawler giving cyclops a hug, when cyclops was the impetus for the krakoa bullshit in the first place

P.S. there have been other writers that made nightcrawler a flirt and somewhat lecherous. he's made out with storm in the past and the novel "Soul Killer", he uses his tale to grope megyn, his girlfriend at the time. the suave philanderer with a heart of gold is much more appealing that whatever armchair catholic puppet writers currently use him for

The average experience of any X-Men supporting cast character. I think making Nightcrawler into an Aramis style swashbuckler is a little too on the nose

how? his background is literally circus performer and he's acrobatic.

marvel could make him much more unhappy like AoA nightcrawler. AoA nightcrawler is actually able to teleport parts of his body. he can teleport his fist (while still attached to his arm) to punch someone much harder than a regular wind up. i do prefer AoA nightcrawler much more than regular nightcrawler. i feel like he and beast (my favorite x-men) are or can be the most unhappy of all the x-men because they are the most moral, when one is religious and the other isn't but writers suck and don't get it

Yeah, I'm not buying this bullshit that Nightcrawler can teleport punch, that seems like a stretch

I don't like it. Nightcrawler should have only fully body teleportation that he has to focus on entirely. I guess this comes with the mutant territory though, the constant promise from Xavier that he will teach them to harness and control their powers so that they all become godlike beings

that's STILL better than krakoa and bendis so i completely disagree with the earlier capeshit comment. it makes no sense to say capeshit is bad now because (conversely) of modern simplification. that's a contradiction in terms

It's hard to pinpoint a solid decades long character arc using all of the disparity in writing and characterizations for Nightcrawler. You can do it for Cyclops in a very well thought out way, that he transitions into an extremist through his experiences over time, that he begins as a humanitarian idealist and then becomes more radical and accelerationist as he gets older, and this is even reflected in the lovers he chooses over time from Jean to Emma

                Anonymous

                >the lovers he chooses

meh, that's writers giving cyclops bombshell psychic babes as props to make him more of an "alpha". because he must be the best if the hot psychics love him. same thing happened with cuckoos and then they do it again with ms marvel. that's just self insert shit and even then emma was a b***h to him when he realized keeping secrets from beast and the other x-men was wrong. she emasculated him and literally called him a beta to play on incel mentality

and jean grey isn't that great an example to start with either. after her death, an alternate future jean literally tells cyclops to keep living his life which includes getting with emma

                Anonymous

I've always saw it as he was with Jean because she was with because she sincerely loved him and had empathy, and when she died he lost a sense of that empathy and found Emma because he was pursuing a more cold and calculating psychic girlfriend to fill his void. It honestly shows a level of character growth for him even though it's negative, he replaces the warm psychic influence of Jean with the icy psychic influence of Emma that's more like Magneto and Mystique

                Anonymous

logically that makes sense but i still see the essence self insert at work. when emma is completely shattered, beast is the only one that gave a frick. jean grey put emma back together to placate beast, not as a show of respect, and after emma comes back, she doesn't treat beast well and tries to go after the man jean grey was with. it seems like you can use the favoritism of psychic women in x-men comics to gauge which characters are supposed to be the main character and which ones are lower in "status"

                Anonymous

I truly can't say how much I think Cyclops actually cares about Beast, I think Scott might just think of him as disposable as a soldier for him

                Anonymous

initially cyclops did give a shit about beast, but since alternate future jean grey told cyclops to get with evil emma, that was manipulated out of him or his change was facilitated by other characters for writers to put cyclops where they want him.

by the time messiah complex comes around, cyclops is willing to threaten beast with violence by touching his visor for beast to press the button that's supposed to kill bishop

it's also bendis's style for using other characters to dogpile on one he hates. the same thing happened when bendis wrote daredevil. imagine a gilmore girls script but instead of a rational argument, it's just a bunch of characters outnumbering one character to make them persona non grata. nightcrawler is used as a pawn by writers and it's fricking disgusting

No they give wolverine a pass for everything. Thats why he gets a death squad.

          Anonymous

absolutely yes that too, wolverine and cyclops get the narrative favorability

the reason cyclops was the focus though was because he headed up the first iteration of uncanny x-force, and already allowed magneto to join them, had already separated from the x-men, tacitly approved wolverine's involvement in another death squad operation, and in that very issue was literally giving a speech with mass murderer magneto

also beast had asked wolverine point blank where wolverine had been because beast could smell things on wolverine, and wolverine just told beast to ask cyclops. cyclops was leader at the time and as leader he was the one with all the culpability. wolverine knew he couldn't hide what he was doing from beast so he didn't try at that time. later wolverine did hide things from beast but it was after cyclops had set things in motion
