Cruise had an itinerant childhood with an abusive father. From a young age, he knew he had to be independent and focused.

the rock is literally known for his big goofy smile, and every single tom cruise character has the exact same amount of edge. just enough to be a bad boy and not a drop more. he's always the good guy, always the hero, always morally justified in his actions, but with just enough edge for him to be interesting

All of his characters are the same guy in different situations. He's a charismatic, wienery, bad-boy with a heart of gold who gets mad and reckless sometimes, but is still the best damn [-] you've ever seen. Name one of his characters who that doesn't describe.

Magnolia, Interview With a Vampire, Tropic Thunder, Last Samurai, Edge of Tomorrow, Minority Report. Just off the top of my head, his characters in these films don't fit that description

          Anonymous

          >Interview With a Vampire
fair, he played a vampire once
          >Magnolia
          wienery, mad, heart of gold
          >Tropic Thunder
wienery, mad, with makeup and more swearing
          >Last Samurai
wienery, mad, heart of gold, "best damn [samurai] you ever saw"
          >Edge of Tomorrow
wienery, heart of gold, "best damn [mech soldier] you ever saw"
          >Minority Report
wienery, mad, heart of gold, "best damn [time cop] you ever saw"

variations on a theme, he's the same guy plus or minus one or two traits, he's fricking jerry maguire every time, sometimes more mad than wienery but that's about all the range he has. except for that time he played a vampire i guess.

Last Samurai he is an alcoholic cripple and is humbled by the samurai immediately

Edge of tomorrow he starts out as a sniveling coward

Minority Report he is a drug addict who is mentally crippled by the disappearance of his son.

            You are a moron

Yeah all the characters have a backstory, I'm not saying he's literally the same guy in every movie, but his personality is always the goddamn same plus or minus one or two details. yeah sometimes at first he's sad or recultant to be a hero, but by the end of the movie he's the same fricking guy every time. sometimes he's that guy right from the start, sometimes he ends up as him, but he's always essentially jerry maguire.
i'm not even saying it's a bad thing; i like the guy's movies. but at a certain point it's like watching the coma seasons of archer, it's technically a different scenario and character every time, but it's always archer.
tom cruise has one character that he slightly alters to fit the role as required. unless he's playing a vampire i guess.

The only thing that fits if you look at it real hard is "bad boy" and that's only if you take it literally because he's the antagonist of the film.

              Anonymous

I'll watch the movie but I refuse to believe he isn't also charismatic, wienery, occasionally mad and/or reckless, and incredibly skilled at whatever he's doing which i guess is.... being a hitman, in this one.
just know if these descriptors fit 'Vincent', i'm going to be very disappointed with you.

                Anonymous

Heart of gold, and maybe reckless are the only things Vincent never was. He was most certainly charismatic, wienery, got mad, and absolutely the best damn hit man you've ever seen.

damn see, this guy agrees with me. based on that scene alone, that could be pretty much any of his gun wielding characters throughout the years, that's exactly how the would all handle that scene, i might as well be watching jack reacher, ethan hunt, maverick or last samurai (if it was a sword not a gun)

No one cares about that. People go see Tom Cruise movies for Tom Cruise, not whatever character he plays. You want to see an actor loses himself in a role, go watch DDL or DiCaprio. At the end of the day it's Tom Cruise who'll bring the biggest crowd.

Exactly, I'm not saying he's not entertaining, I'm just saying he's not a great actor from a technical standpoint. He's really good at one thing, and fair play to him.

                >I'm just saying he's not a great actor

    Good question.

I think it's his committment to realism that has kept him going, even at the expense of his health. The only other actor I can think of that has tried to do as many of his own stunts is Jackie Chan. Cruise rides motorcycles, skydives, jumps off of shit, learned to fly aircraft, and will gladly strap himself onto the side of an aircraft in flight. Not too many actors are willing to do that shit.

He is definitely passionate about filmaking and playing roles (maybe in his real life too considering he can't seem to hold a woman) but I despite his eccentrics irl he's good sure, He puts a lot of effort into roles but somehow when people like Leto or LaBeouf do it they get shit on.
