The truth is that it's a bad show populated by unnecessarily obnoxious characters that deals with an interesting premise.

nta but subjectivity only gets you so far
there exist media products that are objectively bad and when you see people praising them effusively it's very suspicious.

Nothing comes close to what this show offers in terms of philosophical questions about our place in the Universe. Yes the books are better and the Tencent version is like for like adaptation of the book but nonetheless the Netflix version hold its own and I am curious to see how D&D will frick up the ending as is tradition.

like this. it's so over the top that it feels like a false flag.

The cope can't be sustained forever. The more people watch the more realize the hype is for shit, and the more people read the books the more they'll also realize they were moronic to have considered it a good show. And shills have to tone down their BS or lose whatever shred of credibility they had. Only terminal-midwits and bots will remain.

nah i went into the expanse having read the first 2 books, it was hugely disappointing. i haven't read three body problem books, but if anyone liked the railgun ambush scenes in the expanse, the nanofiber ambush completely shits on it. i find netflix 3BP far more palatable, but the actors definitely hold the show back a bit. i'd say worth a watch. i'm gonna check out the tencent version after.

Yeah, this impressed me in the books but trust me when I tell you it pales to what happens in Book 2. The Chinese adaption is only season 1 but since it basically uses book 1 as a script you can jump right into book 2 when you’re done.

The MC is kinda whack but she gets tolerable as the show goes on and it has some interesting ideas that they explore pretty in depth. I watched the 6 hour edit someone made of the tencent version. It's pretty good and faithful to the book. You can find it by googling 'disembiggened'

          https://disembiggened.com/#download

Seems interesting, the tencent version is 22 hours total

I personally haven't watched it but im on the camp that the tencent version is too long and too slow
This cuts it to 6 hours but you will see the same characters as they will be in the books, also the tencent version is acloser adaptation of the first book, some times scene by scene

      this show won't be getting a S2
it cost an enormous amount to make, not just the production costs (which were beyond insane) but the rights to the adaptation alone were so high that Amazon (AMAZON!!) initially passed up on them
and the show didn't do well on any metric
it didn't get high viewership on netflix, didn't get good critic scores, and didn't even build a fanbase
the gentlemen did way better and that was made for a fraction of the cost
this trash is dead, and good riddance, imagine giving D&D *anything*

                This is bullshit.
Book sophons are much more limited in what they can and can't do.
And hacking every electronic device on the planet is not something the book sophons can do.
If that's the case, then the whole premise of the show (fricking with particle accelerator results, "science isn't real", driving scientists to kill themselves) makes no sense. The TV show sophons could just frick with every electronic device until we go back to the stone age, which will make things a lot easier for the trisolarans once they reach Earth.

The show somewhat mitigates that by saying since its only two Sophons, it woulds struggle to do too much at once.

              >they hired D&D to make this show and aren't going to stop on Season 1
no, they didn't hire D&D to make this show, actually
they hired D&D when they were still high off their GoT fame and paid them hundreds of millions to make *something*
at first they were in talks for making different projects (including some other sci-fi), but they ultimately ended up giving them 3 Body in the hopes that the double investment (hundreds for D&D, hundreds for the Three-Body Problem IP) would somehow pay off
it did not pay off, and it won't be getting s2
this isn't some random show that needed to do sorta kinda okay
this is, even leaving aside the costs of the IP, the MOST EXPENSIVE SHOW THEY EVER MADE at 20+ million an ep
if they were so determined they wanted to throw more money at it, they would've just filmed both seasons at once like disney did with andor and call it a day
but they didn't, and they won't do it, because covering what's left in S2 would make it even more expensive than it already was

                exactly
it's just not going to happen
this Black person i'm replying to is mentioning advertisements, but that's just netflix trying to salvage what they see as a disaster
they know this failed, and now they're coping by thinking it's one of those sleeper hits that just needs a few weeks to spread by word of mouth and reach critical mass, which is why they're keeping quiet
but i've seen the way the normies in my family reacted to it, and none of them were at all interested, this is not the popular show they wanted or the prestige television that would garner them 10/10s from pretentious frickwits

i'm not sure if you've read the books, but suffice to say that to cover what's coming up next would either require an astronomic budget, far beyond what they got already, or it would just be underwhelming garbage with bad cgi not worth making

That would have been enough for season 2 sure but season 1 is literally a mystery murder with a slight twist at the end. Even the VR stuff can be made cheaply, after all you’re in a game.

      Plot of books:
Chink woman contacts aliens asking them to wipe us out.
They use magic to prevent scientific advancement for the 400 years it will take to arrive.
Man spoofs another message describing a different planet and it gets obliterated.
Aliens block ability to send messages.
Man finds round about way to be able to send another message and tells aliens to frick off or he'll just destroy the earth anyway.
50 years later man is replaced by woman and aliens destroy ability to send message because woman was never going to send it.
Distant human spaceship uses 4th dimension to destroy aliens that were meant to kill them at the same time as above and sends the message describing alien's planet's location.
Alien's home planet is destroyed and they frick off from earth because it is nearby and will be targetted after.

The main theme of the book is that survival is paramount and resources are finite. The whole thing is basically an analogy of whites representing humanity.

the chinks can make good tv, i enjoyed both three-body and three kingdoms, and they don't have the overacting problem of making anime makes or adding goofy shit like you get in asiatic stuff
the problem is that for every decent show they make like these ones there's 1000000 wuxia garbage with homoerotic undertones written by women and homosexuals
like 99% of chinese media is dumb fantasy shit, they need to move past it, but i think all the men just read books and play video games so Cinemaphile is totally female dominated

It's the sherlock pasta meme, but on sci fi
It's morons writing about how smart people act
If you enjoyed this series, you have the suspension of disbelief of a 7yo little girl.
I was already cooked, but when it reached the scene of "we don't trust you now, so we will destroy or halt all your sciencitific progress" AFTER they've been halting and destroying all scientific progress for 10 years, I was burned
I kept watching out of spite, to see if something was salvageable, but it wasn't
It doesn't even leave in a good cliffhanger, the brain dude just drifts off, cut to a motel room, here's some bugs, THE END
    wtf

also, i want to add that making the nanofiber creator a girl and then giving her PTSD is really appealing for some reason. i don't like that the show starts off with 2 women humble-bragging about being highly accomplished and educated elites, but i do like that it comes with some consequences.

It’s annoying and unnecessary and it doesn’t help that every other show and movie is doing the same member-of-under-95-iq-demographic-is-actually-a-genius

arguably the only good decision made in the whole netflix show regarding characters is literally the last scene of Augie
she deciding to put her talent towards helping humanity in an humanitarian way while ignoring the war altogether
and netflix was able to do that because they split one character from the books into 3 different character (and another one in 2) so most of their shit became incredibly dull and diluted but
that specific development in Augie worked
            the rest is shit

    Bookgay here
Haven’t seen the chink version but the Netflix adaptation is awful. Maybe if you have t read the book and don’t care about being lectured by hispanics and Black folk you’ll enjoy the show.
They captured the gruesomeness of the nanofiber boat scene really well but that’s about it.
The asiatic from dr strange and davo were the two standout performances

Da Shi in the book gives the impression of knowing exactly what’s going on without understanding any of the science or details.
Excellent character to help the audience navigate the story

Agreed that reading the book can only hurt your experience viewing the show as it compares unfavorably.
The forced diversity and _CURENT_YEAR_ dialogue feels particularly jarring and gratuitous

Its more a case of its Netflix so of course they're gonna shoehorn in minorities and women into it. I'm not moronic but I can still enjoy some decent scifi without Sieg heiling every episode when there's a black guy on TV. We all know in reality all the scientists would be white and/or Asian and 99% male.

Can a bookgay explain what exactly differentiates Three Body Problem from the million other alien invasion stories?

      Anonymous

The alien world building is very good (though the show doesn’t do this because they ffwrd through the game scenes) and humans also never gain the upper hand. It’s always skin-of-your-teeth survival.
It’s also very obvious that it’s a non western author with sensibilities to match which makes the book somewhat unusual
It doesn’t remind me of haruki murakami but if you’ve read him, you’ll understand what I mean by different.
It’s also nice for something not to be America centric for a change but of course the Netflix show ruins that as awll

If you've never believed in 'the yellow israelite' the books will be eye opening. A recurring theme is that it is better to kill everyone than allow some people to survive. For example they describe going door to door in Beijing to destroy life-jackets because there were not enough for everyone to survive flooding.
    Women repeatedly destroy civilization.
In fact in the depiction of the future there are no men, except one niggest.

Half the books are pointlessly long character nonsense and then there is a small amount of science fiction. The show took the worst parts of 3 books to use. If you wanted to listen to the audiobooks you would skip to 4:40 in the second book and then have to skip a similar amount in the third book which is cancer boy and Wade. Then there is some interesting stuff going on.

In the second book one of the wallfacer discovers this stupid theory called dark forest, and then he exposes location of some star by broadcasting it's co ordinates into universe, after some years that star is vanished, meaning that some alien race destroyed it, hunted it.

Now this dumbfounds trisolarins and the threat of exposing their location and even earth's location like this will destroy them. How can they be so dumb? They have two sphons that have been able to take over all the cyberspace of earth and they can't stop a broadcast? Are you kiddding me?

can the sophons actually kill people in the books?
I forget what the countdown is supposed to be
I remember it just being an empty threat but could they actually kill scientists who didn't stop their research?
I recall the sophon's abilities to be mostly read-only but also tampering with individual subatomic particles and limited ability to simulate radiation

Nah, they killed themselves over being harassed by the Sophons and the realisation that their entire life's work was futile and that apparently messing with the laws of physics is easy for other beings and thus humans are utterly insignificant in any sense. Of course we later find out that it was an illusion that they could influence the laws of physics, but even later we actually do find out that there are beings that can use the laws of physics to kill other aliens.
