was this the first gritty adaptation of a family friendly folk tale or was that excalibur?

      Anonymous

If you read the original source material the Arthurian legend was def not family friendly.

of course not, and pirates were slavers and killers, but popular culture romaticised them to the point that they are seen as heroic swashbucklers and adventurers.

Then Excalibur is not a gritty adaptation of a folk tale, but rather an adaptation of the original legend, fricking moron.

It's Robin Hood with an American accent but it's good enough.

That jab at Costner in Robin Hood: Men in Tights was great. I liked that while Elwes joked about the accent in the original English while, in the dubbed French version, he said that "unlike my predecessor, I don't dance with wolves".

Yes. There's a whole goofy side plot built around the Sheriff's satan-worshipping black magic tactics that's kind of played for chuckles. This is peak 90's epic complete with who-cares female characters, orchestral horns, big sets, and bants between the fellas.
