I think it was because mel gibson became a household name so it became natural to associate the first film with Mel to bring on more DVD / VHS sales?

What exactly is the timeline in this universe? Max was a cop in contemporary times. Nuclear war or something happened and suddenly people started worshipping engines and calling them selves things like Magnus Scrotum before Max has his first grey hair?

Yeah how many years have passed in universe between Mad Max 1 and the Furiosa fanfiction movie? Seem like completely different worlds.

it's all fricked up and the original movies are like "muh few years from now" and it's not clear when the nuclear war takes place

I imagine Mad Max 1 takes place after about a decade of global conflict and economic collapse with limited nuclear conflict and Mad Max 2 is after thousands of warheads are launched between nations. maybe 15yr after the first movie and is the same Max. Thunderdome I imagine as like 50-70yr after the nuclear war even though I guess it's supposed to be the same Max too. and I imagine Fury Road is like 130-180yr after the bombs even though Joe is supposed to be a pre-war Colonel or whatever

The west has already fallen in Mad Max 1, there is still something st least resembling civilisation left but it's a bit fricked (just look at the state of the police station in 1). After Max goes Mad he goes away from the civilised area and travels to the wasteland, as stated in the Mad Max 2 intro.

The canon in these movies is vague and weak though, the only thing that is consistent in these movies are Max's injuries because of Miller's medical doctor autism. Fun fact: Max has David Bowie eyes in 3 from the car crash he has in the second movie.

        >(just look at the state of the police station in 1).
its because the movie was low budget and they used some abandoned ass building to reduce costs

Well they certainly made no effort to make it look less like an abandoned building. The place is a MESS. And it's, you know, in the movie and very obvious so I'd say it counts. Mad Max 1 was always envisioned as taking place in some fricked up future, it was just kind of vague and they didn't elaborate or even mention it in the movie

    >the same actor from the 2nd film plays this pilot who is a different person
What exactly was the thought process behind this?
He might as well have been the guy from the 2nd

The same thought process behind Sergio Leone casting the same guy as the villain twice in a row and then using Lee Van Cleef to play Angel Eyes after he played a good guy in the previous movie

it used to be, and it was glorious. aboriginals having gunfights in the streets, kids taking rifles to the river to shoot cans. street racing as far as the eye could see and open speed limits on the highways. now its dead, and we're a gayer, more moronic version of europe
