    >We do hate Family Guy. And we totally understand that people love it, and that’s why we put it in the show. We understand that it speaks to some people, and it can just be a simple laugh, and that’s great, and we certainly don’t think it should be taken off the air or anything like that. We just don’t respect it in terms of writing.

    >I think what makes me disappointed about Family Guy is that it could be an amazing show. You can tell there are smart people working on it.

    >I don’t think they work hard enough, they need to work harder.

Honestly this just comes off as incredibly pretentious. I'm all for people in the industry being critical of one another, because lord knows they aren't doing it enough today, but nagging them and saying "DO BETTER" feels like Matt and Trey framing themselves as some sort of sage wizards of the business who know something everyone else doesn't. So, what, Family Guy should just up and drop their cutaway format which was working so well for them and adopt more serious stories? I'd argue that started doing that in later seasons and it did more harm than good. Oops.

South Park doesn't own a patent on how an adult comedy cartoon is made, and that they dick sucked Simpsons for brownie points only shows they really had no point to make the episode.

Is South Park right about Family Guy?

They are right, and they say here that Family Guy at that time was fine for a simple laugh. Family Guy has gone downhill since then. Warning: Reddit spacing ahead.

What they were saying in the episode was just that South Park tried to make a point and to tell a story, while Family Guy just had a ton of random, unrelated nonsequitor jokes and had nothing to say.

I do disagree that Family Guy HAS to “try harder.” Family Guy has no characters, message, or plot. But none of that matters to its audience as long as it is funny. The Manatee randomness is fine as long as it is funny. That is all that it tries to be. South Park tried to say something and to tell a coherent story, so the jokes had to connect in some meaningful way. That was harder work. That’s fine, too.

I happen to greatly prefer South Park, although even that has jumped the shark for me as of a few years ago. But for me, that’s because Family Guy jumped the shark after its first couple of seasons and wasted funny anymore. Neither show was as funny to me as Golden Age Simpsons until season 8 or 9. Rick & Morty and to a lesser extent American Dad were then funnier than either for a while. South Park and to a lesser extent Rick & Morty make me think and are more interesting than Family Guy ever was, even when I laughed at Family Guy, I never remembered it.

        Not quite.

But it's funny that the worst thing they could come up with was "you're gay haha" especially since Trey and Matt have always been pretty upfront about being a little gay.

I'm not gonna sit here and say it's god-tier peak television. Hell most episodes range from mediocre to just plain bad. But at the end of the day when you view it as just a cartoon for laughs, it's serviceable in that regard. Even if most the humor is only funny because it's random.

Was South Park right? Kind of, yeah. But I'd watch either show when I'm in the mood for a chuckle.

Also unrelated tanget, but when I was younger I found one of those little bible tract booklets and they had a panel saying Family Guy (an dult cartoon) was corrupting our youth because Stewie is gay.

Like, sure. The episode where Lois cheats on Peter with Jesus isn't a problem, but Stewie being gay is. Like... the frick?

This. It's why I still watch Family Guy to this day, even the new seasons. It manages to make me laugh, and it's all I need. Can't say the same for the other FOX cartoons today personally.

It’s weird how pretentious the South Park creators are considering how unpretentious the show often is. Then sometimes, and it’s become more frequent, their pretentiousness creeps back into the show and you’re reminded that they’re like that

The Drawn Together movie was a big middle finger to South Park in that regard.

Cartoon Wars aired in April 2006, meaning the catalog of Family Guy episodes consists of only S1-4. Season 4 was weak, but at the same time, it can be chalked up to a 2 year gap and the show trying to find its footing again (which it didn't, but that's hindsight).

If it was just Season 4 and what Family Guy was turning into, they might have had a point, but S1-3 is genuinely some fantastic television, and they instead chose to talk down the series as a whole. For that, no they weren't right. Given how up their own asses Matt and Trey have gotten over time, and with how much disdain they now have towards their own earlier and better seasons, hindsight is better spent noting that they were just beginning their ascent into their anuses.

      Agreed.
South Park has been a glass house of lazy writing for years now most episodes are little more than 2 jokes stretched over 22 minutes.

It was always interesting to me how folks in the animation industry thought Family Guy was lazy writing even in its original seasons. Like S4+ gets worse and worse, and it progressively made more sense to refer to its writing as lazy, when it'd explain a joke and then do it. But when it came to the original seasons I never considered that the cutaways were what everyone saw as lazy to begin with, because it's just the writers coming up with random non-sequitor 3 second jokes and randomly inserting them without any flow to anything happening. It made sense to me later, but it was crazy to think even when Family Guy was brand new it was being looked down on by the industry.

People always saw Family Guy as lazy because they saw it as a Simpsns rip-off.

      Some still do.

Probably South Park. South Park takes a ton of effort.

Family Guy could very easily be produced by Generative AI. The Manatee thing will turn out to be predictive.

I predict that they will switch Family Guy production to fully ChatGPT (or rather, similar) including the voice acting eventually and nobody will notice. It will run for another 1,000 years with zero human involvement.
