Heron was objectively the better movie
    >better story
    >better animation (2D>3D)
    >better music
    >better voice acting (sub)

It's going to Heron because it's an original movie that doesn't end on a cliffhanger. I like the movie but more people to admit that you can't call something that only half of a finished product the "best" anything.

Spider-verse can't fricking win as an overall movie because it's HALF of a story.

Anons, look at this from a Californian liberal's point of view.
One has blacks, the other doesn't.

And they're completely irrelevant, and Hollywood hates them, almost as much as Josh Luna thinks they hate them. You think it's asians sticking Aquafina into roles?

As someone from California...lemme tell you right now that means jack shit. Like really means jack shit. This state celebrates anything chocolate brown and wouldn't blink a fricking eye to let them step all over everyone else just to make them feel special.

      >Better animation
Most of the background spiderpeople looked like ps2 character. The entire Spider society's artsyle was so ugly. I can't even alot of the shit that happens with Gwen. It's so fricking dull visually. It also seems kinda racist to give Miles orangutan arms and facial features. First Spiderverse movie was so much better in everyday. Second one is getting dick riddin by Twitter.

The Boy and the Heron is a fricking mess. Anybody, who thought otherwise is a moron. Miyazaki dumped like a million ideas and metaphors into that movie and it's fricking incoherent. The actual main story and main character gets all the development of a footnote on the back of a napkin.

As a fan of most of Miyazaki's work, it's hard to believe that he would make something so muddled (especially after The Wind Rises).

Robot Dreams surprised me as my favorite out of the nominees, loved the visual storytelling and how lively New York felt.

I can’t imagine why anyone thinks Spider-Man is deserving. Doesn’t tell a full story, doesn’t do anything new or impressive and it’s entire premise is just “diversity good”.

Meanwhile Miyazaki made a great film, as usual, and he’s technically a POC as well, with a whole staff of them.

This. Plus the fact that there is zero character progression, no character arc or growth or conflict resolution. It’s like claiming a sentence with no subject is well written because it employs a few multisyllabic words.

You're not thinking of it from the voters perspective. If previous years are anything to go by, 3/10 will vote, and those 3 are going to unanimously vote for spiderverse because it's the only one they've seen (their kid "forced" them to "watch" it ofc)

If neither had won before I would give it to Miyazaki considering that this is his swan song. But both have won before so that makes this harder to call. I lean towards spiderverse because its american and the more widely seen of the two but I suspect that the voting is a lot closer than the OP pic.

If they cared about awarding the best film and not just whatever shit they saw with their kids then it would be Heron. But they don't care about animation so it will be Spider-slop.

Heron did WAY better than spiderverse in both ratings and box office. Spider verse did ok but was like 38 for the year, with GOTG 3 and ant man 2

      Super mario
      Detective Conan
      Slamdunk
      Boy and Heron
      Doraemon
      Demon Slayer.

That's Japan's top choices for the year.

Source? And not just one review you read once. That doesn’t constitute mixed otherwise Armond White existing means every American film receives mixed reviews

The only reason why Chihiro won an Oscar in the first place was thanks to the lobby of Disney (specifically Lasseter). There is little chance for Heron to win it without someone's back up. That is true for almost any Oscar winner in the story of the awards.

Let's face it, they're going to give it to Spiderman or Elemental because people who decide Oscar winners don't watch animated films and just pick what their kids wanted to see, and their kids would rather watch superheroes or Disneyslop than Miyazaki

Spiderverse will probably win even though Heron deserves it more because it’s what the kids watched and it has pretty colors. It’s the epitome of style over substance and watching it feels like being a baby and having keys jingled in front of you. It’s sad but true.

Only TWO sequels have ever won best animated feature, Toy Story 3 and Toy Story 4 (lol). The academy hates sequels and sucks off disney. It's Elemental.
