Starscream isn't that controversial. The most I can think of is the fact that he tends to attract gayhag fangirls and trannies who interpret his weasely traits as making him a femboy, but he was popular long before they came along so it's not like that defines his popularity

It sounds like you’re more of a baragay, but for an autistic answer from someone who has thought a lot about fujoshi psychology because I find them fascinating. With many fujos they tend to self insert with one of the males rather than look at it as an observer. Thus they make one out to be more feminine because that’s the one they relate to and se themselves as.

I’m into femboys/feminine males but I don’t like them with other males. I like seeing them femdommed by tomboyish females.

Yes this. I noticed that too. Think it's inevitable that someone selfinserts to a degree if they write/draw or think about a character and the ship they are involved in a lot. I know some fujos that just straight-up relate to Optimus Prime the way he is because they can relate to some of his traits or problems, but the majority finds it easier to do with characters that look closer to them like Starscream or a more normal/human bot.
                >spoiler
Even though I am mainly into big gay shit the feminine boy/dominant tomboy dynamic is criminally underrated and I have no idea why it's so fricking rare. Straight tomboys in general are rare.

Does it though, Starscream is a wuss but he's still a warrior, and a high ranking one at that. It would make more sense to me to explain his changing forms as an obsession with upgrades and higher performance, which goes along with his general theme of being constantly hungry for more power.

Also it's not like people who are vain aren't also always changing their outfits, driving multiple cars, etc, it can be seen as a status display assuming every old bot can't just up and get a new body when they feel like it.

Besides if Starscream really was that uncomfortable with his looks, why would he keep turning into shit that looks roughly the same as opposed to whatever it is he thinks would be superior lmao.

Starscream was my favorite character when I first got into transformers, but now I don’t really give a shit about him lol. Weird how that works

          >give me more heroes who become villains if anything
Fricking based I am in for that shit. I would love to see someone go renegade because of enemies that radicalized him.
IDW2 Bee almost got there when he beheaded that guy that killed his protegee. I would have loved Orion/Optimus going down that route in IDW1 too. He was a good guy that gave the Cons so many chances but they always used them to kill even more and betray him. Prowl was right and this is why he was so cool. He went too far later but he was aware of this and tried to stop himself and his flawed species and this made him so interesting IMO.

I doubt we will ever get this again or that we will ever get this in any of the cartoons. Too serious for modern cartoon mentality and as much as I love Decepticons, their fanbase are pure spergs that would go apeshit and attack the writers if an Autobot MC would go rogue and kill 'Cons.

That’s my big reason for liking Starscream. I love him as this conniving, backstabbing, yet also pathetic piece of shit. It’s so entertaining to watch him talk himself up and try to kill Megatron only for it to blow up in his face. And he also never learns his lesson he just keeps trying

Yeah this. He can be written with more depth maybe but he absolutely has to be an butthole otherwise he would just like others and boring. Even in shitshows like WfC he was great. No show is shit enough to make Starscream boring.

I’m ok with Starscream having one because it was just the one and it’s never been done again. It’s like a cool thought experiment but not something that should be a part of his character

I just prefer the opposite, Autobot to Decepticon conversion is done less overall and since I prefer the Decepticons, it makes me happy. Of course the easy route is always "MUH ANGST/REVENGE TURNED ME TO THE DARK SIDE" but there are a number of other ways you could go about it. Maybe they just agree with them, maybe they enjoy battle so say frick it and choose the more trigger happy side just for kicks.

A rogue Autobot is an interesting idea too. That would plant them more in edgy anti-hero territory rather than straight up side switching, and there are plenty of Autobots who can probably fit that bill anyway if not for Prime keeping them in line.

              Anonymous

I generally think that the motivation of the cons needs to be written better. As it is that movement makes no fricking sense since it's basically a big gang of hools that join because they consider rampages fun. But such a movement would never last for long, especially not when half of the upper echelon is constantly backstabbing each other the way they do. I wish they would write them differently. Even the worst dictators managed to convince people because they promised some future utopias their followers believed in and had a concrete plan about what they would do to factually improve life. It was often lies or based on wrong assumptions, but they had to get that far otherwise nobody would follow them, let alone follow them into a war.

I think a TF series would get instantly better if the war was more about political differences and Megatron having an actual plan instead of one side being evil for the sake of it.
I wonder what Earthspark will reveal about them. That Megatron seems way more chill, so I hope they will have an episode that clarifies what the war exactly was about and when and why Megs has become the guy he was.
They better not postpone all the best stuff because streaming service cartoons are prone to cancellation these days.

Now in Earthspark I want to see a Decepticon demand to be tried under the laws of the land, not just locked up in GHOST jail.
And have him comply with the sentence. Even multiple life sentences would only be a weekend in the clink for a species that lives millions of years.

I am really eager to see what's going on on Cybertron. I will be disappointed if everything there is the same as usual despite that they might have the allspark back and with Megatron and Optimus being absent for a while. I hope the space bridge destruction was implemented for a reason because it would be pretty damn cool if they got confronted with something they didn't expect once they re-establish the connection to their home world.

I also hope Breakdown won't die or something. I enjoyed Bee's friendship with him a lot. I am glad that we finally have an interesting Bee again.

Well, there's a couple things to consider here. For one thing, the traditional and typical portrayal of the Decepticons is pretty much that of a warrior culture, not totally unlike human Vikings or many other groups from history, basically they believe in aggressive expansion and they, though not a hard rule but typically, enjoy battle, or at the very least see no issue with it being a means to an end, which is what puts them directly at odds with the more passive Autobots in terms of political/societal belief. (There's also the thing about them basically being literally built for this purpose in G1, but we can put that to the side)

Because of this, the average Decepticon doesn't have a problem with going to war for their cause at worst and enjoys it at best, that's sort of inherent to being a Decepticon in the first place, if they didn't believe in that they'd probably side with the Autobots. It's not really about good vs. evil unless that's how you view good and evil, the Decepticons just don't view conquest and acheiving goals through violence as evil much like pretty much no conquerors or winning side in human history ever did either. Remember, one of the main conflicts of Transformers is often the fact that Decepticons want to expand their domain, and the Autobots don't want them to and believe Cybertronians should mind their own business, even if it's to their detriment, because they value peace over power. The Bots vs. Cons was always a pretty political conflict

As for the idea of a "future utopia", there are two ways you can look at it...

                A. the now well known quote "peace through tyranny" says a lot, that the Decepticon idea of peace is that there can only be peace once all is under Decepticon command, and that'd be valid to their worldview

                B. that they don't even care about peace really, because they like war, and endless conquest across the galaxy is not a negative thing to them because they love power, battle, and expansion.

              >I just prefer the opposite, Autobot to Decepticon conversion is done less overall and since I prefer the Decepticons, it makes me happy.

In RiD 2015 Starscream employs a trio of bounty hunters, a decepticon (very likely a vehicon), an insecticon and an autobot named RoughEdge. Not a former autobot, just an autobot. He has no problems following starscreams orders or even attacking Optimus himself. Then again hes a flat character with like 2 lines and no personality. There were speculations on his origins but its likely hes just a mercenary (and the new generation of decepticons in RiD are mostly just petty thugs and criminals so the average cybertronian probably didnt see much distinction)

That’s my big reason for liking Starscream. I love him as this conniving, backstabbing, yet also pathetic piece of shit. It’s so entertaining to watch him talk himself up and try to kill Megatron only for it to blow up in his face. And he also never learns his lesson he just keeps trying

I would rather say it's Megatron. Maybe even Optimus too.
Sentinel would pretty controversial if he was more popular/well-known. I think he was cute, the design at least. Feel similar about Nova Prime and Zeta.

They will never get an own movie or series but Nova in particular is a bit of an issue because he is cool as shit, looks cool as shit and he is a historical, almost legendary hero and ruler that established and reigned over the Golden Age of Cybertron but he was also a dictator and expansionist so even the Cybertronians would be divided about him. Hell I don't even know if Cons would love or hate him since he shares their goals but not their attitude and he looked down on plebians and hools like them and he was a true Prime.

Anyway Nova is the best character.

Yeah he is fricking awesome especially if you reread IDW and look at the little hints and scenes that didn't feel so relevant at first.
He reigned for roughly a million years which is almost completely omitted unless you read between the lines. So the early war had him not Optimus as the leader of the state and autobots. He is also a legit Autobot unlike most other antagonists of the series, the first Autobot Prime even. And he was a friend of Orion at first and surely one of senator Shockwave. Shockwave even trusted him so much he planned making him the Prime as he did with Orion. And Orion was his underling that trusted Zeta for a long time till he slowly noticed Zeta getting more radical over the centuries until we eventually got the dude we see in Autocracy. He established the New Institute and New-Whatever, new was his favorite word and do so without Orion ever noticing.
I can imagine that his was somewhat morally gray from the start but a guy with legit good intention at first. He got rid of functionism after all and was fighting Cons ever since that couldn't get enough revolution until no culture and no city was left. He is an IMO interesting character that got shafted hard. Partly because he was implemented so late, too late to give him more attention since IDW was already busy with other story parts back then not already ending a while later.

Zeta started out the nicest guy around. Then the civil war broke out and over time he became broken and vengeful, leading to his actions in Autocracy. However, the writers wrote the baddies in such a way that a reader doesn't come out thinking "Wow, Zeta went too far" but "Man, Zeta hasn't gone far enough".

The issue is that writers wanted different things out of the characters. No character better exemplified that aspect than IDW Shockwave. The writing's all over the place precisely because two factions couldn't decide on the character's direction. The writers either wanted him to be sympathetic with the potential to be redeemed or an absolute psychopathic monster.

It was done with all of them but Sentinel/Proteus. Guess Pharma was also fine, since he was crazy from the start. Regardless of that I felt like they did him dirty by never addressing how the loss of Ratchet was the central cause for his eventual breakdown. He even assumed control of his body again when he saw Ratchet in Lost Light and stated that he loved him. But somehow nobody gave a shit so he was killed in a stupid way (that made no logical sense) and Ratchet was happy with his frickboi and never once cared about a former close friend.

I also hated the changing motivation of the DJD. They killed defectors, not Autobots. They should have gone after Megatron since he became a defector too. It always felt out of character to make them kill the Autobots all of a sudden and randomly even kill each other. Especially after an earlier chapter already established that Tarn refused to hurt his comrades. He was even surprised by his own thoughts in this and it was the very thing that made the alliance with Deathsaurus work in the first place.

Reading MTMTE right now and it's so weird that happened. Hell, Brainstorm went back in time just to kill Megatron and caused the entire team to go on a wild goose chase to stop him and the most he got was a slap on the wrist.
                >Those millions of deaths Megatron caused were just part of his very, very long path to inner peace
Obviously wasn't there for the threads, but was there any "Getaway was right" going on the same way there was a "Cyclops was right"?

Fricking this. It would make an interesting story about a guy and his journey that turned him from a nice and funny dude to a guy that activates the nukes. It would even improve Optimus' writing because his doubts and his journey makes more sense when you know he has followed a good friend for a million years and witnessed himself how terrorism, coups and civil war can turn a good person into a vengeful spirit.

Mandroid is fun. I thought he was a shitty villain at first, but I like how broken and whacked he looks now. I actually hope he will get a good end or at least a good death scene because he doesn't feel as evil as he came off like at first. He tries to get rid of a species that invaded earth and brought war and death to it. Even if this timeline might be less brutal he is still not a bad person for having an issue with war robots that came and killed people. The MCs choose to ignore his claims so far which doesn't help, even if Twitch seems to know that he is more of a broken person than an evil maniac.

I think the later parts will reveal that he had a girlfriend or friend/parents that were killed in one of the Autobot/Con fights and that his hate is the result of a desire for revenge.

It's kind of pointless when you realize Cybertronian gender is not decided by body types. Their "gender reasignment" isn't any different from Megatron upgrading to a new form. They really missed the mark with that, Barber much more so than Roberts.

SJW/woke/whatever writers have infiltrated and reeked havoc across the entirety of "geek culture" for the past decade+, but I can't think of anything that it's affected in such a negative way than Transformers. Like moths to a flame, once the flag was waved in IDW to make Transformers a piece of media putting liberal identity politics on pedestal those types came flooding in as people who never cared about the franchise before then, and since Transformers is somewhat niche in the grand scheme of fandoms they felt all too comfortable trying to dominate and claim it as their own, even if they only care really about a tiny portion of the brand

I didn't make me rage but I think it was odd for two reasons.
First, we already had plenty of great and contextually matching metaphors for the desire to change the body to become someone else, the whole functionism part thematized this as well as Megatron's and Starscream's constant body alterations. Maybe even Tarn's story.
Secondly, there is no sex with TFs so gender roles is a foreign thing as Anode has said herself. Imagine meeting an alien species that is categories two groups that are foreign to you. vampires and werewolves, for generic example. What would you be? Why would you even identify as any of them, as a human that does not know such categories? You might of course say you prefer vampires and feel closer to them. Fine. But it's still weird to me making that part of your personality.

Maybe I am too moronic for the whole gender debate, but to me gender can absolutely not exist without a sexual context and the cultural/evolutionary roles that come with that. It makes no sense for a robot to say that they identify as the other gender because it makes no sense for gender roles to exist with them IMO and even less does it make sense to change because there are no cybertronian rules regarding gender. It makes even less sense for IDW in particular since most bots were "male" anyway and they only met the first "women" way later. So it's not like Anode can feel weird or bad for being treated like a man when there were never any female bots to begin with during their lifetime.

          Anonymous

Anon, you missed the fact that only Anode changed bodies. The point you're trying to make was already made in the comics.

There's nothing wrong with male and female robots existing to me, masculine and feminine traits could be acknowledged and identified with without actually being men and women with dicks and pussies. The problem is overcomplicating shit by taking it any more beyond that with contrived crap and the need to represent every sexuality under the sun when it shouldn't even be sexual.

Anon, you know "sex" and "sexuality" are different things, right? Let alone gender.

All the franchise has ever had was:
                "I'm a girl"
                "I'm a guy"
                "I'm neither"

That's too complex already, it should just be masculine or feminine. There's no need for anything in between or any more complicated than that, as we know female Transformers only truly exist for marketing reasons anyway and arguably to give a little variety, which is fair, and romance should just never be the focus, it's fine if used sparingly...I guess, can't complain too much when G1 and Beast Wars had a tiny bit of it, but it's really kind of dumb anyway. When Transformers devolves fully into mundane soap opera territory it betrays itself as a brand.

Sure it is, because having something other than male or female robots in a world of male and female robots opens up the discussion of why Transformers have gender and why some don't and why some have mixed gender or no gender or blah blah identity politics, which is something that never should be the topic of Transformers.

They kind of were in original G1. Sunbow continuity and im some ways Japanese G1 depicted them as robot slaves of the Quintessons created via Vector Sigma. They rebelled and were at peace until the Decepticons started a war because what did you expect when they were built for war? If they don't fight, life would be meaningless for them. They weren't exactly programmed with more leeway like the Autobots were.

All the female Transformers I've seen have noticeably feminine bodies that are less blocky than the man bots and more curvy and slim. That's just a design choice because they have to attract the waifu gays and since there aren't many female formers they have to use the few they have and give them the standard look.
Look at how female bots like when they are designed by people that don't care or have a big girl fetish. 60% of Ruckley's fembots are fricking monsters and SnuSnu warriors.

Yeah but I was primarily thinking of IDW Sentinel. I think he doesn't get much hate because they see him as more of a tool when he was with Proteus and the plot of Titans Return was too tangled and Sentinel's return too funny to be taken serious enough to be mad about it. Same is true for TFA Sentinel. He is portrayed as an butthole, but he is too stupid and funny to be truly hated IMO.
I think the fan reactions to IDW2 Sentinel is actually weirder. They mostly see him as Sentinel IDW1 light when Functionism was actually never a thing in IDW2. The whole context is different and the only thing you can truly blame him for is that he was too conservative and afraid to move away from Nominus' politics, but he didn't kill anybody and Nominus reign was an era of peace so he wasn't completely stupid for trying to keep it that way.
Another weird thing is that he seems to be a beloved part of NTR fan stories for IDW2 Megatron/Optimus.

because he doesn't manage to. The Decepticons are based off might makes right so in a sense if Starscream does manage to off him, Megatron is unworthy. So he keeps Starscream around to keep him on his toes. Honestly it can come down to a lot of reasons depending on continuity, but generally you can just chalk it up to Megatron not taking Starscream seriously as a threat, or thinking his conniving ways can be a valuable asset, maybe part of him thinks it's respectable since Decepticon, sometimes it could be that he enjoys Starscream keeping him on his toes. Sometimes Megatron has enough of his shit, again that depends on continuity.

Starscream is usually like very high in the power structure, so its kind of implied more than seen that he's been a great asset to the Decepticons one way or another even with his treacherous ways, he's the leader of the Seekers, so you kind of think he must be the best aerial combatant

Starscream is usually at least a reasonably competent officer, and his complete lack of tact and discretion mean that it's safer to have him in Megatron's sight openly planning to overthrow him than it is to kick him off the team and have his plotting from the shadows.

Going by the G1 cartoon, Megatron trusted Skywarp more than Starscream, but Starscream's the one that's most capable of using his own initiative without Megatron around, so he's the one that leads the Seekers.

Tyrest deserves another chance. He wasn't interesting in the comics maybe but his role and design are so fricking cool it would be a shame if they never used him again.

She’s the least annoying of the Terrans but still annoying. Arcee’s single episode appearance was one thousand time better than all her screentime.

I know nothing about transformers. Are they born with a set vehicle mode they can’t change or do they pick theirs?

Things aren't typically set in stone
Most continuities have them able to play around with alt mode so long as it fits their body type
      Husky/lanky/smol/tall etc

The first thing you have to learn about Transformers is "it depends on the continuity". For example:
      - In some universes, the Transformers species are robots. In others, they're Star Trek energy beings in robot suits.
      - In some, they have a god. In others, manufacturers.
      - In some, their home planet is Cybertron. In one, their home isn't a planet or named Cybertron.
      - There are more than a handful of different ways they replenish their population. Some universes even have multiple method. Actual sexual reproduction even happens sometimes.
      - The reason for the Autobot/Decepticon war has ranged from pure evil power grabbing, to manipulated jealousy, to rightful revolution turned unchecked tyranny.
      - Sometimes they can pick new forms, sometimes they get stuck with one.
      - Different incarnations of characters from universe to universe can vary wildly, from personality, alt-mode. gender, faction, etc

Sometimes even if a character is actually a Cybertronian or not depends on the continuity.
        - The Armada Mini-Cons? Not Cybertronian. Mini-Cons from other series? Cybertronian.
        - Headmasters? Sometimes the body is a Transformer. Sometimes it's a lifeless piece of equipment to be piloted. Sometimes the head is a Transformer. Sometimes there's a human inside piloting the head. Sometimes the head IS the human, or human-like alien, either through magical trinkets or cyborg surgery.

I always felt Bumblebee is the weakest of the live-action movies, it's just the least fun, the over-focus on Charlie instead of the character the movie is named for also doesn't help

I wonder about the same thing.
Right now we have Earthspark airing, the movie coming soon and more infos about the game. They are either moronic for not announcing the comics now while the iron is hot (or at least warmer) or nobody has even bought off the license so far.

Getaway's "frick Megatron" attitude was correct but his first plan for dealing with it was sacrificing someone who wasn't even a Megatron sympathizer, I get lots of people here hate Tailgate but that's fricked.

Don't be disingenuous. She didn't replace Ratchet while he was in the position. Ratchet left, and First Aid filled the vacancy, then First Aid left, and Velocity filled the vacancy.

And she still did a good job all things considered even though the writer was in a kill them all frenzy so… she’s kind and pretty I guess.

Velocity should canonically just be the Dr. Nick of the Transformers. a quack whose kinda not good at their job but they try.

Lately, this past year or so, I've fallen in love with Magnus' blue face plate.
It's just the coolest handsomest thing to me and I couldn't tell you why.
I know for a fact if I was his RED figure again I would cave and get it.

          Lodestar is pretty! Pretty!
