    >"As for how many people need to watch Lord of the Rings? A lot. (Laughs.) A giant, global audience needs to show up to it as appointment television, and we are pretty confident that that will happen,"
It's being made by people who don't understand the original series and would actively fight against it if they did.

The paranoid thing here is though, if the mega-studios today are so risk averse, why do they dump so much money at a single project like that? Its like they stuck with one popular thing and then decided to go all out, because its popular with no regards to scale. These studio execs are complete fricking morons, completely detached from reality.

Because it's not studios dumping the money, it's Amazon and Jeff Bezos, who have more money than they know what to do with and can write it off their taxes if it fails.

buy right to IP and ignore the lore and aesthetics of the IP to create your own story "adapted to modern audiences".

look at the wheel of time, instantly pissed off fans by ignoring the story almost entirely and the aesthetic. it was a shitty show to boot. do you think they were risk adverse?

it's typical incompetent woke middle aged managers thinking that tv shows are like any other product that can be managed by appealing to the masses with token gestures and social media campaigns. They simply don't understand that media is not like a can of pringles, it needs a human connection, it needs soul.

The reason companies are doing what would normally be a poor business decision is because they are trying to keep a high ESG score so they can get more investors. They make their money from the investors. This is the same with most massive companies these days and the reason why Netflix was pumping garbage for years until they realised no one is using their platform anymore

I saw this at my old job (different media industry) and I think it comes down to one thing: Execs like big numbers but they can't add.
        >Creator: Hey, let's make this good little movie. It'll probably only make $10 mil, but we can make it for $2 mil.
        >Exec: No, frick you and your stupid pocket change. We're going to make a movie that makes $500 mil. It'll cost us $200 mil to make, but it'll be worth it.
        >C: But that's a huge risk. If it fails, we'll be out $200 mil.
        >E: No! If Avatar made a billion dollars, then we have to make at least half a billion, or what's the point?
        >C: Well how about we make 50 smaller movies? As long as we don't go over budget, we'll make a tidy reliable profit all year long. It's not like there's a shortage of scripts, directors, or wannabe actors. We might even get lucky with a sleeper hit, or discover some big actor before they blow up!
        >E: You idiot, can't you count? $10 mil x 50 isn't even close to $500 mil!
        >C: Okay, well, how about this: We'll make separate movies, but they'll be connected in some kind of "cinematic universe". That way we can experiment while still synergizing with our other successes.
        >E: Hmm. I like it. It'll be like one giant MEGA MOVIE. Yeah, that's great.
        >C: Okay, great.
        >E: We'll start by putting $100 mil behind each one, and if any of them flounder then we'll pull the plug on the whole operation.
        >C: *sigh*

they want the female audience and women become irrationally angry when they see extremely pretty girls on screen. they will refuse to watch and guilt-trip their men into not watching as well. it's a well-known phenomenon. this is why newscasters etc are never TOO hot even though it would be trivial to find a 10/10 that can read off a teleprompter. once a movie/show is targeting female viewers nothing above a 7/10 will ever be allowed to appear on screen.

a lot of very attractive people end up also being very nice because they've been the target of so much jealousy they had to train themselves to be super pleasant and humble at all times to mitigate the hostility their peers feel towards them by default.

It's not that. NPC defaults are pretty close to max ego. I feel bad for 10/10s because people look at them as pseudo mythic archetypes and they tend to get raped, murdered, and sacrificed a lot.

The only reason you pity 10/10s, is that they reached their mid-20s and they had everything: the best boy/girlfriends; the best friends; the best fun. Then they didn't do much to improve themselves other than that so they tend to remain brainlet.

Anons here are going to think this is incel MGTOW nonsense because it sounds insane but it's 100% true. Because women are insane by default, not exception.

        >be 21
        >convince my buddy to watch Conan the Barbarian for his first time
        >I'm practically a scholar on the Riddle of Steel so I'm excited
        >meet at his apartment, his gf at the time wants to see it too
        >he's loving it so far
        >gets to the part when Conan has the slave girl sent to him for breeding
        >gf gets up and leaves to her room
        >buddy seems to be enjoying it less and less and keeps checking his phone the whole time
        >I start to think he's a fricking homosexual for not enjoying Conan
        >find out months later that after his gf left, she was constantly texting him accusing him of thinking that slave girl was prettier than she was and that he's going to jerk off to the chicks in the movie instead of her
        >constantly accusing him of being a salicious, cheating pig
        >he nearly has a nervous attack secretly trying to keep his relationship together while I'm drunkenly having a good time

When women get into positions of power, they intentionally keep attractive women out of the group because they feel threatened by them, despite the fact that their husbands are not present and will not be tempted by them. It's simply a function of the female brain.

What a brilliant way to get women to be prostitutes. It used to be, you could go to the cinema to see all the top hotties of the day, and those hotties monopolized all the attention. Now dudes can't get their boob-ogling fix at the movies. Which opens the door for any 7/10 half-asian girl to put on a tank top and cat ear headphones and stream herself playing the latest Assassin's Creed and make $10k a month.

"Far off the shadows of Sauron hung; but torn by some gust of wind out of the world, or else moved by some great disquiet within, the mantling clouds swirled, and for a moment drew aside; and then he saw, rising black, blacker and darker than the vast shades amid which it stood, the cruel pinnacles and iron crown of the topmost tower of Barad-dûr. One moment only it stared out, but as from some great window immeasurably high there stabbed northward a flame of red, the flicker of a piercing Eye; and then the shadows were furled again and the terrible vision was removed."

Galadriel in the Tolkien notes had various contradictory origin stories. He loved her but couldnt settle for a precise backstory
In one of the possible backstories he tought that were found by his son Christopher, Galadriel had an "edgy teenager phase" in previous eras, where he went around as an amazon to try avange what the dark foces did to her eldar tribe (the Noldors. A bunch of light Black person-behaving elves who deserved everything bad happened to them btw)

They cleary took inspiration from this idea found in the notes

Morfydd Clark has a great name and looks weird, which is considered a recipe for stardom because she'll attract scum and not threaten women. While Cinemaphile has its share of scum, gross feminist superheroes aren't a selling point for everyone. RoP also has the soft edges, pastels, and framing of a kid's book written by a middle-aged mom. It's not made for Cinemaphile.

All of this gets announced well in advance so the people paying can plan what they want to go and see. 18 cast members and showrunners will be onstage and im going to take a wild guess they got Stephen Colbert to host the thing. Im betting Howard Shore gets brought out too.

They already started covering some of the nearby hotels with ROP stuff.

Yes, there is a chance that it will be good, even under the conditions we've seen. Not a very good chance though. Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. Honestly I doubt it'll be quite so terrible as the schizoid hyperbolic outrage-addicts on Cinemaphile predict it will be, but I'm also certain it will not by any stretch of the imagination capture the same wonder and beauty that the LOTR films did. Expect PJ's Hobbit quality at best - watchable, possibly even enjoyable, but strictly mediocre.

    > GALADRIEL IS CANONICALLY SUPPOSED TO BE 7+ FEET TALL
No she isnt, more like 6'3

      Anonymous

Aragorn is the tallest of the Fellowship at 6'6", Galadriel is written as towering over him in the chapter Lothlórien, when they first meet, and in The Steward and the King, when Aragorn is properly crowned and wed to Arwen (Galadriel's granddaughter, who she "gives away"). That Galadriel looks like a giantess even against the tall Numenorean blood of Aragorn is significant.

        Anonymous

Was Arwen also towering over Aragorn?

          Anonymous

No, Arwen is described as relatively tall for a woman, same as Eowyn, but still shorter than all the other men, again like Eowyn. Maybe 5'10" - 6'. But Galadriel is singled out as being especially tall because she's Noldorin royaltyand there aren't very many of those in Middle-Earth, it marks her out specifically as a being of particularly supernatural provenance, in allusion to the giants/Enakim/Nephilim of the Bible.

          Anonymous

Elven women are tall, simply because Elves are taller than men.
But Galadriel is described as tall for an Elven man.
Her mother called her Nerwen which means man-maiden because of that, and not because she was a sword-wielding warrior qween with piss and vinegar like they are trying to cringe her here.

The truth us I'm not worried that she's black. The issue is the desire to just blackify a white character and ignore what we all see. Make a character from another land or tribe or something, but don't just interject a random black person and pretend we don't see it. I also with we just had more movies about Africa - history and myth. It would make way more sense if more black on screen is the goal, and there are for sure stories to be told.

    I WANTED SAURON TO WIN
    SAURON SHOULD HAVE WON

there are almost 0 saurongays out there and it pisses me off
entire movie is nothing but a series of asspulls and cheap plot devices to deny sauron his victory
aragorn murdered a diplomat and it's le okay because he is with le good guys and the diplomat was with le bad guys. you're supposed to root for it somehow
frodo should have never survived and he had way too many "close calls" to the point of absurdity. even things that should have been "bad" (smeagol succumbing to madness) are actually good because he just so happens to knock the ring into the lava when frodo got corrupted

i won't even bother with the parallel events happening of the frontlines
humans and elves winning bullshit after bullshit battles
oh what's this one of le good goys died? so tragic... JUST KIDDING LMAO, HE WAS BROUGHT BACK THROUGH DIVINE INTERVENTION! NOW HE IS ALSO STRONGER, MEANING THAT HIS DEATH NEVER WAS A THREAT BUT IN FACT SOMETHING DESIRABLE
moronic ass cavalry charges working. charging through a 4meter wide platform with no momentum? orcs btfo! charging through orcish spear/pike formations? orcs btfo! charging into fricking 50 feet tall mammoths? haradrim btfo!

nothing needs to make sense as long as it leads into a scenario where sauron loses, everything else is just background noise as far as tolkien is concerned
even at the end when sauron dies and his kingdom collapses, the collapse just so conveniently prevents the orcs from attacking the encircled good goys and it just so conveniently narrowly avoids them! wow how convenient! wow so narrow! wow the stakes were so high!

    TOLKIEN WAS A FRICKING HACK

Alternate history doesn't mean illogical history. There is no reality where black people settle in middle earth and either don't die off due to low vitamin d or evolve skin colour. How shit are the shows you watch?

They just played the teaser in the ad break on British TV, prime time, even though we are two months from release.
Amazon are going to spend an absolutely fortune on marketing for this show

          Good luck
          Also where's "shapely redhaired"?
Not that I would actually want any of them portrayed in a show where everyone is fricking ugly

Will we ever get a fantasy film that doesn't mix weapons and armor from different periods and make them all plastic. All I want is a setting with early medieval look.

There is a difference between watching and paying. I am sure Amazon will launch an anti-piracy campaign soon after release. Got to control the customer, lest he starts buying what he wants and not what he's told to.

    >Rings of power doesn't hold the rights to the Silmarillion, have to make up their own stuff from the appendices
    >producers collectively don't have an entire season of TV experience under their belt

Let's forget the cynicism, the woke BS and all the "we want to reflect the real world" garbage. Let's pretend the people running the show are lifelong tolkien fans, and WANT to make the best lotr show possible. Even under those circumstances they are severely crippled by not being able to use anything from the Silmarillion and their lack of experience.

Could have just focused on the Hobbit caravan making their way into the shirelands and all the dangers and obstacles they meet on the way. Could fill a few seasons with that. It would be quaint, inoffensive and even heartwarming.

Instead we get warrior galadriel and garbled garbage.

    >I'll do the same thing I do with everything that comes out these days. Laugh at it. Repost the memes. Tear anyone who enjoys it down with ridicule so I can watch them try to defend it and then come around to agreeing a year or two later because they want to fit in. It's all more rewarding than partaking in it ever was.
